For a while, the latest X game was thought to be vaporware. In the last 24 hours, Egosoft has dropped 3 new vids of the game. Fellas, it's time to upgrade your rigs to handle this sexy eye porn candy...

System Requirements
hey, myfist.... we are fighting the corps that want to frack our land up. So why are you 'frack" ing?
Well, it runs fine on my system, but what the fuck were they thinking with this omfg awful gui design...
I just spent an hour in it. Docking took forever because it didn't bother to explain that you had to get really close before you double click the icon and I already got stuck inside a station(made it out too, oddly enough) when I exited a highway because some asshat decided they need to be sitting right up against them.
Edit: Went in again, first impression was too high. This is a stupendously bad interface. There are just so many brain dead simple things that have been mysteriously left out, like the cursor trail when you're using mouse look so you can find the damned thing during a dog fight. With no radar either, on a high resolution the difficulty comes down to finding the cursor and the enemy.
Bug fixing alone wont save this game, it's got major design flaws that need reworked. They may have thought the console friendly gui was going to make the game more accessible, but they seriously hosed the works. The only advantage I can see over the old system, which is indeed a steep learning curve, is that it plays nicely with console gamers. The only simplification of any real use in making it easier to play on a keyboard is that we have fewer actual options.
I'd say check back end of year unless you have a major hard-on to play it.
Sci-Fi fan here, and I loved the way the new BSG series used "frack!" in place of "fuck!"
So...
"For frack sakes, stop fracking up our land and water you dumb mothafracker!"
How's that

@ my fist: "So say we all"
As the sixth game in the X series, X Rebirth continues the long and unfortunate tradition of being a bit broken at release. So much so that Egosoft's director Bernd Lehahn took to their forums to apologise for the current technical problems being faced by the game's owners. In a post to the community, he addresses some of the current issues, while laying out a basic roadmap for the game's future updates.
"I would like to apologise to those of you who have had technical problems," Lehahn writes. "I have started a thread in the Steam forums where I have listed the most common errors and have now collected a lot of information about this. All of this will of course be made available here in our support forum as soon as our server is able to remain stable under the load."
In a separate post, Lehahn lays out certain tips and tweaks that should help players to avoid crashes and boost performance in the game they paid £40 for. He also lays out some of the more noticeable bugs they're working to fix, including one that lets ships fly through space stations.
The team are also working on expanding and improving features, with a major update hoping to release at the beginning of next year. Before that, smaller tweaks will be dropping, including clearer NPC marking, improved menus, and further keyboard binding options.
Why is it when a major space sim comes out, it ends in a train wreck??? Sword of the Stars II, Legends of Pegasus...
Well, watch this vid and pay close attention with the possible console link to this game...
Edit: More evidence over at their forums....
And this damning piece of evidence....
It is very obvious X Rebirth was intended for a console (xbox? PS3/4?) then a split second decision was made to scrap the idea. It took 7 years to develop this... SEVEN! and IMO this is nothing more than a half finished, half baked, wannabe arcade shooter. With all of the worst parts of an arcade shooter in it. Ummm... Is there any "Simulation" in this "Space Simulator"? because i fail to see it. Major Stress is NOT amused...
Rebirth was not even supposed to be set in the X universe. However yet another decision was made to change the lore to make it an X game.. There is nothing X about this game. except the name, The POS of a ship you fly, and the weak tie ins with the X other games.
The epic fail of a UI, and serious flaws in the game design itself pretty much sums up the majority of what is wrong with this picture in Rebirth.
Fight? There is lots of that here. Fighting with a useless unintuitive UI, and LOSING. Memorize your hotkeys. You are gonna need to. No targeting reticules with a lead off hint. The targeting reticule pretty much obscures the view of the enemy ship itself. It would be nice to actually see what i am shooting at besides a RED BAWKS! (bring back the mini camera modes!) No Radar. SERIOUSLY?! In Rebirth now i guess everyone doesn't need radar, or instruments any more, and "fly's by the seat of their pants". The combat in X3/TC/AP series is far superior to Rebirth IMO.
Trade? WHAT TRADE?!! i have encountered the no trade bug :/
Build? umm what do i build? besides building up my own ship? Then again i have not progressed far enough into the game to be able to do anything else. Keep getting my ass handed to me by the evil "RED BAWKSES".
Think... Ummmmm Fly around , shoot stuff (More like get SHOT AT), go "Ooooohh!! Aaaahhhh!! looking at SPEEEESSSS! until you get into these god awful highways which obstruct even THAT view. The dialog with the NPC's is pathetic. If i hear my co pilot say "SHUT UP BETTY"! one more time. I am gonna mod a way to space her sorry ass. Seriously? a "space suit" with a hole that shows cleavage?? Yup, we know the intended age group for this game.. Unfortunately even the Tweens are too smart for Rebirth.
Build, Trade, Fight, Think should be more like "Shoot", "Sit", "Wait", "Sleep" in the case of Rebirth.
Once again all of the glorious eye candy in the world cannot save you from crappy game play.
That's why video games shouldn't have release dates - you can plan when to release it, but you cannot plan when it will be playable.
This makes me wonder what they were doing all those 7 years. X Rebirth is SimCity 5 all over again - nice graphics, and that's about it.

Life long fan of Egosoft games, but after this I am done with them. I find it to be one horrible game and bug fixes won't help. I am £40 out of pocket and a little upset at having been screwed. I know it was my own fault, but I trusted them.
Yeah I encountered this bug within the campaign. Found out that you have to tell the freighter to buy the 100, then not accept the job offer by the co-pilot... wait for the frieghter to do its thing, then fly over, wait for the freighter to get into the same space, then sell the wares... Finally got past that point in the campaign (could have been the 1.15 patch that helped this along)
Tedious is what I call this game at the moment. I enjoyed most of the X games, this one I find its like relearning the x games all over again... I hope they continue to optimize the engine...
Don't write it off yet. Give it a couple months, see how it turns out. Egosoft has a good reputation for fixing shit post release, and opening up modding options.
We've already gotten a cure for walking around stations hunting for asshats to hire from a modder. I don't expect Vanilla XR to ever be as good as vanilla X3, but the processing power available to the game dwarfs it's predecessor thanks to being a proper threaded engine. If and when they finish the game, we potentially have the ultimate space sim waiting for us, one that isn't crippled by a horrendous cpu bottleneck like X3 is.
That rant i posted was just an initial reaction after about an hour of play. I am not giving up on rebirth just yet. Egosoft is very good about fixing their stuff. They may also try to add what the community is asking. I got a few mods in her that give it some redeeming quality's (better highway alphas, shut up yisha, better cockpit FOV. debug menu.)
I think I might enjoy the Shut Up Yisha mod
I'm shelving X rebirth and am going to watch for patch notes and mods. Anything less than "detailed reworking of core game aspects" will result in permanent disinterest.
I am pretty disappointed about some things. If you go into this thinking its an "X game" you are in for a rude awakening. They should have made Rebirth into a totally new IP. My biggest bitch's right now are the total lack of a radar, and very sloppy combat mechanics. Correct me if i am wrong, but does your trade ships have to "follow" you in a group to work correctly? What happened to autonomous sector, and universe traders?? No matter. I believe ether 1) egosoft will fix this disaster, or 2) modders will fix this disaster.
Yes, your trade ships must be in your squad in order for them to trade.
I miss the automation... where is my autopilot (or at least let the co-pilot fly the ship) At least when the ship is travelling through a highway you can look at the map and it will still be moving.
The main reason why the X games are so popular. The Modders!!!!
Yes, X3 Reunion is a nightmare of logistical overhead that would grind to an unmanageable pit of doom. An average space sim with unreachable potential. Toss in trader and station management software and it you've got a workable empire builder.
I'll try it again in late December or early January.
Update from the Admin on the state of X-Rebirth...
Hello, today I want to give an update on our latest progress and an overview of what we are going to work on in the near future. I am sorry that I can not reply to every complaint and report. Immediate work: Priority #1: Fixing crashes
Right now we are still getting a lot of crash reports. We believe that we already have fixed the most common ones with the updates 1.13 to 1.15 but there are still crashes that are caused by the game code and it goes without saying that fixing these has the highest priority. Priority #1: Improving performance
We are at work on a number of problems that cause the performance to drop to unusually low framerates. Some of these are very specific to certain situations only, while others slow the game down on specific configurations of hardware. Right now we are looking at where we can make fast improvements that will help as many people as possible achieve a better framerate and then we will work our way down to the more specific cases. Just to give you an idea of how crazy the measurements sometimes are: I have seen a very busy zone of the game today on a laptop with Intel HD4000 acceleration (an onboard integrated 3D accelerator which is not really inside the min specs of our game) achieving 10 fps at minimum graphics settings. This is not much of course, but I was surprised that it did run at all on that machine. At the same time I saw a YouTube video where somebody demonstrated performance problems in a very similar zone and also with minimum settings, achieving almost the same FPS, but this time running on a high-end PC with GT780 card. Clearly we have to focus on improving our performance on higher end machines. Another example of performance problems are machines with multiple GPUs, like laptops that have an integrated GPU and a second faster one. In some cases X Rebirth lists only the integrated GPU on these machines and this makes the game run extremely slow. One possible fix for one type of driver was already added to 1.15, but we continue to investigate this problem too. Priority #1: Fixing game play showstoppers
There are unfortunately several areas of the game where gameplay features are not working as intended. In some situations these even block the plot (which makes an already bad bug a total showstopper bug for us). I am just listing them here because it is beyond the scope of this posting to explain trigger conditions and exceptions as well. But let me just say that not all bugs affect all customers and many can be worked around even if they happen. But please do not take this the wrong way, this is not an excuse: We are aware that bugs of this category are always very fustrating to everybody affected by them and you should not be forced to search for a workaround online to play our game. We are really sorry for problems of this nature. - Trade ships that stop reacting to orders (this is not one bug but a number of special cases that all lead to the same result) - Problems with repairing ships including a very common case where certain transporter ships that cannot be repaired after they were captured (small "non capital" ships with modular engines where you cannot place an engineer to do emergency repairs) Priority #2: Adding small but important features that are requested by many of you - Adding support to delete the order queue of ships (partially done already) - Improving joystick configuration - Adding fixed target mode (t/e from X3) as alternative to soft targets. - Fixing character animation errors (work in progress) - Giving you a choice of NPCs with good known skills after "winning" a smalltalk (so the reward is no longer random) - Crates on platforms will be re-balanced - Improve readability of menus - Improve how NPCs are labeled to make it clearer who does what - Improve the "asking for people" conversation - Adding a logbook menu - Autosave support (work in progress) - Improve feedback when NPC can not be hired (e.g. ship is full / NPC is busy) - Adding some crucial commands to captain and pilot conversations - Ship trader does not clearly show if he is busy - shipyard busy output - Showing minimap (gravidar) on event monitor instead of "no signal" - Option to modify FOV (limited to a small range at first, maybe more freedom later) - Unbinding a key to nothing - Fix bug that sometimes you see negative cargo amounts There are a lot more requests for this list and I will update it ASAP. Some people on the team are already working on #2 priority things. Priority #3 AFTER all of the above are done (and these lists are probably not complete), we want to start discussing with you which bigger features we should work on first. You may know some of the candidates which had been mentioned in interviews before the release, like turning your head in the cockpit, external camera views, improved map features etc. We have a long list of things that we would like to add, but we want to listen to you and let you decide about the priorities. Before it makes any sense to discuss this in any more detail however, we have to fix all of the above. I will post an update next week in this thread and inform you about our progress. In the meantime I can only thank you all and repeat my apology to everybody who does not yet have a good experience in the game. -Bernd
Some honesty from a company is quite refreshing
<shrug> It's Egosoft. They do this. The game comes out full of bugs, gets horrific reviews, then they patch it. Then they patch it some more. Then they patch it and throw in some free content. And so and so on... for YEARS.
You might know some other PC-specific game company that acts like this.

Sounds like quite the paradox.
