Has there been any thought of SD creating a space for a Wiki for the Elemental universe?
I have a bunch of questions that I am embarrassed to ask and it would be awesome if I could go to an Elemental Wiki to search for the answers/find data/find mods, etc. Many of the posters in these forums do a GREAT job of sharing info with others, but someone seeking knowledge would have to search for the SD forums sorting through many posts to find an answer instead of going to a one-stop-shop.
Hopefully some brave soul with a penchant for sharing encyclopedic knowledge will be up to creating one. I really think it would be a boon to the community.
I was updating fallenenchantresswiki.com for a short while, but it's so unbearably slow. Sometimes it would take 5 minutes just to submit a change. I gave up shortly after LH was announced, because I figured anything I changed would become outdated soon, anyway. I tried to go back recently and update it, but it's still too slow. I get bored at work.
The only reason I can think of to demolish a forest is if your faction isn't Master Scouts and you want to move units around your city faster. The problem is that you never get that forest back, and it's nice to have it around your cities when enemy troops are invading (unless they're Master Scouts, then it's useless).
("Master Scouts" is a faction trait, and units belonging to a faction that has it aren't slowed by forests and hills.)
I'd also like to take a stab at making a clearer tech-trading post. I'm going to ignore what others have posted so far, so this will be a bit redundant (except merlinme's example, which I'm stealing):
Your cities each produce a certain number of Research Points (RP) each turn (it's a decimal value, although usually you only see the whole value displayed). These RP are put towards whatever technology you're currently researching. If that technology requires 100 RP and you're producing 10 RP per turn, it will take you 10 turns to finish researching it.
Each time you finish researching a technology, you get a percentage (I think it's 30) of the amount of RP it took to research that technology in the form of Knowledge Points (KP) in the category that the technology was in (Civ/War/Magic). KP is a tradeable resource. KP you received from researching does you absolutely no good, but KP you receive from another faction is immediately converted to RP in the KP's category (so if you get Warfare KP, it becomes RP for a seemingly random Warfare technology). You don't get to choose what technology the RP you get from trading goes to. Even if you were researching a Magic technology and traded for Magic KP, the RP it becomes wouldn't necessarily go towards the specific technology you're researching (and it doesn't tell you what tech it goes to).
When you trade away KP, it's like trading away money, in that you lose it. Maybe it's best to think of it as documents for "how we discovered this", and you traded away your only copy of those documents. It doesn't really make sense from a realistic perspective.
So, the whole point of getting KP from researching technologies is to trade it to others. KP you get from trades is the same as the RP you get from cities, but you don't get to pick the specific tech it goes towards, only the category.
And that's all there is to it. You're basically just trading RP that you can't use for yourself. It's actually quite simple (just not intuitive).
Flagyl, your post gave me a few more items to put on my Loading Screen Tips mod. You might want to get it, as it will help you understand and discover a bunch of things about the game when you're loading games.
https://forums.elementalgame.com/447335
Do note that, once you've installed it, you won't see the new tips when you're loading a game that was started before installing it. That's just the way mods work for this game.
@Darxim-Thank you for the info on research and thank you for pointing me to your mod (I had already taken note of it, actually. Good work).
Two questions about your mod: 1)Can I use your mod and Heavenfall's mod concurrently?
2)Is there anyway to prevent the loading screens from transitioning to the game screen until I click to start the game? What I mean is, sometimes, while the game is showing the loading screen and the game tip, it then goes to the game screen so fast that I am not able to read it. Is there a way to make the mod go to the game screen only after the player left clicks on the screen, giving the gamer a chance to read and digest the information? I would guess that the transition from loading screen to game screen is hard coded, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to inquire.
1) Yes. I don't think there are any mods my mod would be incompatible with (although if they change the gameplay mechanics, some of the tips I provide might be less than accurate).
2) Not that I'm aware of. It would be nice, though, if it wouldn't go to the game screen until it was actually finished loading everything. One thing that might help, though, is playing on a larger map, which would increase load times.
Excellent. I will try your mod. Thanks again Darxim (I like your avatar, by the way).
did you guys ever get the wiki for legendary heroes going? im desperate for more knowledge, tips and tricks
Yes, I'm interested in the wiki too.
Looking at posts 21-25, it looks like cardinaldirection would be willing to host.
I suppose we can ask him how progress is going and ask what we can do to assist him.
If a wiki does go up, the first thing I'm going to put on it is the stats for all the champions. I want to be able to easily look up the details of each before making my choice (looking at the XML is more trouble than it's worth). You know, when I'm not choosing solely based on magic trees. If neither choice gives me access to a new tree...
Update: MediaWiki (personal favorite) is installed on a server; just need to configure it, and get a domain (already checked a couple ideas, but open to suggestions). Give me at least a few days though, super busy at the moment.
is there a recommended site where we can check to see if a domain is empty for you?
Thank you cardinal. I'm sure I speak for the whole community when I say that.
How do you see what tech it went to? I never see the diffrence and when I look at the right top of the research screen the RP stay the same over the 3 trees (civ, war , mag) even though I just traded like 100 KP warfare points (going to me ofc).
Also how do you see how much KP from each tree you have to trade with, so you don't accidentally trade RP?
You have to look at the tech tree and see what's increased. If it went to the tech you're currently researching, you'd just have to know how much was there before. There's no clear indicator other than "Hey, there's RP in that tech I haven't done any research on yet."
You can't accidentally trade RP. You can't trade RP at all, for that matter. Only KP. You can only see how much KP you have to trade by opening up a trade dialogue with another faction. It'll show it on the left side.
Update: working on elementalgames.org
legendaryheroes.elementalgames.org
fallenenchantress.elementalgames.org
warofmagic.elementalgames.org
...
I also feel a Wiki could be very useful, but don't have any experience in setting one up.
