What happened to Global Warming?
When I put my first above ground pool in around the late 90's we were able to open it in April and start swimming in May.
Now my pool is just opened and still not warm enough to swim in
I'd like some global warming back...
Any port in a storm.
That article also says oceans accounted for half the warming as they cooled previously.
http://www.skepticalscience.com/a-comprehensive-review-of-the-causes-of-global-warming.html
Note how the models from a few years back show nearly all or even more than 100% of the trend caused by greenhouse gases, with a state of cooling if not for our evil pollution.
Now half of it was from the ocean cycle. Astrology has a better track record of getting things right than the climatologists working for the IPCC do.
So far, the Farmer's Almanac has been far more accurate, at a tiny fraction of the cost, not to mention a tiny fraction of the carbon footprint.
I told one global warming believer that it was a fallacy [not phallacy]... and he wanted to know what male genitalia had to do with it.
For mine, that says it all.... proponents of global warming are none to bright.
Global warming has made the avatars extinct.
Only my avatar. Not yours.
I hate you.
That's funny - Here, Hankers' avatar is AWOL & Doc's is present. Go figure.
Damn, that's the first sensible thing I've read here regarding the effects of GW.... like the ice age made dinosaurs extinct, a warming planet has wiped out the avatar population. It's so sad, and I was just getting to like a couple of 'em, too.
What's sad it that the emoticons are probably next, and where would we be without those?
I mean, without ... how would people know if I was jesting, being serious or just a proper twat?
Yup, this GW could have some serious repercussions.
And what if parts of our keyboards melted so only rude words came out.... and the mouse became too hot to handle and started doing all weird shit on its own
The result of that would be wholesale and undeserved exiling.. and Jafo using personal insults and extreme cuss words to enforce it.
So yeah, this global warming thing is more than just scary... it's causing downright terror and trepidation.
I already used the extinction angle in post 2206. It's my copyrighted intellectual property.
You'll be hearing from my lawyers soon.
Fixed that for you...
It's that damned global warming, I tell ya! I know I pressed that O key twice. Obviously it's the heat and it didn't wanna build up a sweat and work a second time.
It isn't known as Global warming anymore. It is now called "Climate Change" or "Man made climate change" and it is still a big a hoax as ever.
They could call it whatever they like, such weather fluctuations occurred long before man rubbed two sticks together and invented fire. And nothing changed because he told his neighbours, who in turn told theirs.... who in turn told theirs and distant relatives. And a few thousand centuries have since elapsed, with hot and cold fluctuations being a natural part of the planet's development, so what's happening now is just another perfectly natural occurrence.
Now if only we could stop the global warming theorist from bumping their gums about it and releasing all that hot air into the atmosphere.
A natural cycle yes but one that has been accelerated by the emission of greenhouse gases. What's happening now is the result of 60 years of polluting our atmosphere. Climate change normally takes centuries, not decades. Predicting the weather is nowhere's near an exact science. There are more misses than hits. Sometimes they get it right but only with regards to large weather systems than can be tracked. There are just too many variables to take into account. Note also the severity of recent storms, on the increase. Not the storms themselves but the power they contain. Also the hurricane season has been a bust, a handful of named storms. Not really an indication of climate change, just another fluctuation. Many studies have been made by various groups all interpreting the data differently, hardly any consensus among them. Then there was the hoax. Made by those who had their own agenda for whatever reason. No one will know with any certainty until a 'serious' study is made by those who actually know how and that can only be done over a period of time without prejudice, bias or catering to any special interest.
Ok...I'm done.
There isn't an increase in the severity of storms. It's myth propped up by a media that didn't used to report on them, and increased technological coverage. We track storms in the middle of the ocean that no one would have noticed before, see tornadoes that hit in the middle of nowhere without doing damage, and generally practice a complete lack of historical perspective in reporting. There have been hurricanes that changed the landscape and storms that spawned multiple tornadoes at once since recorded history.
The fact is, technology and science have provided us with ways to monitor and measure weather patterns like never before. However, while that may assist us in these modern times to know when to batten down the hatches, we have no accurate historical records to compare these new measurements to, and thus we are only guessing that these are new phenomena, that global warming is man made and has never occurred before.
Yes, mankind needs to clean up its act, but let's be honest about it and do it because we should, not because vested interests have devised a plan to part us from more of our money with bullshit computer models that paint the picture far blacker than it needs to be.
A 'serious' study is not within our technical capability. And mainstream 'climate science' has been so infected by dogmatism that all 'serious' studies will be suspect for some time to come. If it were all 'academic', such as in physics, it would be different, but it's academic/political heavily weighted toward the latter, a pseudo-science which is biased by the presumption that climate is by definition a 'threat' to our survival. Our approach should be 'learn, adapt' rather than 'speculate, attempt to control something we can't hope to control'.
Just my opinion.
I can say one thing for sure. I'd prefer a global temperature increase than another ice age.
We could adapt to increased temp much easier than a lowered temp. Besides, increased CO2 and warmer climate makes for better plant-life growing conditions. Look at China, the air quality is bad but daaaamn those trees are green and healthy.
In my opinion, we still know far too little about the larger cycle of our planets temperature. We know there was a massive ice age where the global temperature dropped. But we don't know for sure why. We also can't tell what the temperature was before then, it's all just guess work. This planet has been around for far longer than we have been able to measure the temperature and our records are miniscule when compared to the age of this world.
Also, the major flaw I see in the arguments for man made warming is that it assumes the natural production and absorption of CO2 is relatively 'fixed' which is crazy. higher concentration of CO2 and warmer climate means rapid plant growth which in turn increases CO2 absorbed by plants while also providing an increase of food for herbivores which in turn increases food for carnivores and so on. This planet has a pretty awesome self balancing system, it is not as fragile as people make it out to be.
Also, it is in a constant state of change. To expect this world to stay in a fixed climate and state is stupid, I instead think we should be more focused on developing our technology for adaptability rather than taxing people into the ground to try and control the weather.
You fix problems with innovation, not with taxing people.
Correct!
Also correct!
Not that the global warming/climate change theorists... those with agendas will agree.
It was always greed/profit driven, so the sooner proof is provided that the whole thing is a crock of sh!te the better.
Not really. Think Northwest Passage and not the movie, where none has been before. Several countries are already vying for possession of resource rich areas. Ice bergs the size of Manhattan while not unusual more than one is in a short span of time. A huge crack in a glacier preceeded one of those breaks and was documented. A Virginia beach, White Sands, has shrunk to just a few feet. There's more...I just gotta find it. Lol
Virginia Beach is eroding. It would take decades of the current pace of ocean level changes to get rid of as much beach front as goes poof in a single year. The east coast loses about half a meter every year, averaged along the entire coastline. Absolute sea level rise in Chesapeake bay has been around 1.3mm per year, that's decades to manage half a meter even if the beach only has a 5% grade. Some areas lose as much as ten meters a year to erosion.
The glaciers have been melting for tens of thousands of years. Is it CO2, or just the reality that permanent ice down to Kansas doesn't stick around for the hot spells? A sizable chunk of the worlds population lives in what would have been mile thick ice if glaciers didn't melt.
Also, the Northwest passage was traversed with a wooden fishing boat in 1905. Those yahoos that got stuck in it a while back were duplicating the historical trip. They got stuck, Roald Amundsen didn't.
Too many people have a quaint perception that 'global warming' means the world universally gets systematically hotter....everywhere.
One good reason why 'climate change' is now the prefered title.
Other than that....everything that could be said about this topic was said in page one.
The following 89 pages are simply tedious repetition.
That would include Al Gore, apparently.
Global warming, climate change... getting hotter/colder by the degree, whatever they want to call it, still don't change thing. Vested interests saw a way to part Average Joe from more of his money by throwing us a bogus weather report.
First it was global warming, and when that was proven to be wrong, incorrect, bullshit they changed the name to climate change....
Hmmm, one has to wonder what the fech they're going to call it when that's proven to be natural fluctuations and no amount of money is going to fix it?
I seriously believed at first that the whole world was heating up. Some big newspapers here (that covers the whole country) say that.
I believe I only heard the phrase 'climatechange' in this thread and maybe on some sites you people link to from this thread.
Just watched a clip from the governments TV-channel. Clip is called 'more extreme weather' where a provincial authority (länsstyrelsen, seriously no way to translate that) said in an interview that the temperature for Värmland (province in the middle of Sweden) will go from 4,5C to 9C. They didn't say how long that would take though....
The news here in Sweden is also skewed so you'll believe in global warming. They're clever with wording things.
Is it the same in US, Australia and wherever else you guys are from ?
