After playing my first game, tarth got smeared early on. The new changes (most of which I feel are awesome) do not seem to benefit Tarth.
I get the idea that Tarth is supposed to be one of the 'warrior races' of men, rebels who favor hit and run tactics as well as 'elite' units, hence the bonus when in small armies. This bonus simply does not work with the current swarm mechanic (which i like for the most part).
If you want Tarth to remain w small armies, I would consider giving them a 'anti-swarm' mechanic. something like 'back to back'- your soldiers stand back to back, preventing them from becoming surrounded. Effectively, if two tarth units are next to each other they cant be swarmed. (this also may be a cool mechanic for warrior and defender heroes).
Additionally, the 'racial combat abilities' dont seem to fit. If tarth is 'highly mobile hit and run fighters', Altair's 'rush' ability seems to more fit with Tarth. Switching these two combat abilities seem to fit more thematically, and may actually help tarth counter the swarm more effectively (use their 'tarth blood' initiative and attack bonus w rush's mobility to 'even the odds' before their opponent has chance to respond).
I suspect .85 will nerf Tarth more, as double strike+first strike (best thing about Tarth) will be nerfed by weaker bows.
BTW I Don't think you should judge solely on traits. Custom factions aren't meant to be balanced, but I do believe the created races are meant to be balanced with each other, and I do expect that. Tarth+Irane is fine I believe, at least within the bounds of respectability, though without MP it is tough to measure balance.
Double Strike is incredibly powerful, so I disagree that they are underpowered. Just use their small armies bonus in the beginning when you have few units anyway, at the late and mid game you should make big armies and ignore the bonus and just use double strike.
I disagree with the first part, I believe customs factions ARE meant to be balanced. That's why there's a point system in place for each available trait. That said, their scoring value is horribly askew, of that I do not contest. (There's no way the Lucky trait is balanced at 1 point.)
The last part here hits the nail on the head. "Balance" can only be defined so far without actual competitive play, which is something this game does not have, nor will it any time soon - if ever.
Isn't it racism to claim that the Tarth race is inferior to the others?
Tarth is meant to be a stealthy type of race. Why not give them the ability to fade from combat. I think it's an excellant idea!
