Take Tuatha as an example. A Troll champion with +6 health regeneration per turn. In addition to being a defender (+1 hitpoint per level) he also has the Tough trait (+3 hitpoints per level). Tuatha has 0 defense, and his only ways to boost that are spells, shields and maybe some accessories.
As a melee/tank champion, Tuatha gets flattened in battle. His defense is extremely poor, and his hitpoints are nowhere near enough what is necessary to survive against even basic militia.
There are plenty of other heroes that have to give up significant capabilities for defense, trading them away for seemingly weak talents. While it makes sense from a purely aesthetic perspective, I really don't see it working out balance-wise. The lack of defense only serves to expose how poor AI is at choosing weak targets. Meanwhile, if I face them in battle, they get destroyed instantly as lack of defense = death.
Perhaps something simple as giving them +1 defense per level would help.
Even if you give him all that, he is still much worse at defending from defense compared to other heroes. So I really don't see your point. If I wanted a strong melee character I would never pick a monster champion because they are literally unable to fill up 5 of the most important defensive equipment slots. And they also can't equip mounts, adding insult to injury.
I was kind of hoping when I got Ascian that I would be able to use him as a mount, but alas, no. He's just kind of weak. I mean, Maul is a really amazing ability, don't get me wrong, but boy does having no equipment kill any chance of them being useful. About the only beast-like hero I've found useful is Raza the Feeble, because Coal Stones is a pretty damn good spell.
My point is: to use his +6 regeneration as an advantage in tactical combat by:
1. Raising his defence to level where he wont get more damage per turn than 7 - 12 even while being swarmed. Its doable till your enemy has 4 units in stack with boar spears or similar (11 x 4 damage with traits might be around 50). While his defence while defending should be around 60.
2. Raising his intiative to get that regeneration going as often as possible.
It is good because unlike healing it costs nothing. You still can buf him and he still can equip some armor not from shop like chain with 2 def ans 10 magic rezistance or glowes with 2 def and 2 accuracy or some other rare armor.
I dont know with what heroes you are comparing him, but i think he stands realy well at his role as secondary hero, maybe you just dont want to try and see how it works, bacause i tried and i liked it. Same fits for mausolos, but he is even better because he already has starting 20 def or so and his HP is about 100 just from the start.
I am not saying he should go explore or atack. He probably much better for keeping your back safe or at stopping some sneak armies which you did not notice in time.
His comrade with trhow rock ability for me seems much much more usless and hopless.
