I typically play with slow technology growth, sparse resources, and slightly slow building times on the largest map types with Challenging / Hard for the difficulty. I have turned of the magic spell victory as well. My goal for playing this way is to try and make the game longer and hopefully focus on my ruler and champions gaining lots of levels.
However, I have found that I am still not getting very much past the teens for levels.
So the purpose of this post is to
1 - find out what techniques people are using to try and get higher level characters
2- Does anyone have any other settings that they use to get the game to play a specific way?
Well personally I liked to run around with my Stack of Death (all units in one stack) but since that isn't viable anymore i casually play on normal difficulty with dense magic, normal tech, normal building, small map size, normal amount of monsters, maximum wildlands and maximum (7) AI enemies. At the moment I'm trying to get the "win with faction x" achievements. I've found that my sovereign reaches level 15 this way as well as 1 other champion. The others are just level 7-11 or something and sit in cities at choke points.
I've experimented with Huge maps and dense monster amounts and it has granted me a level 22 sovereign but no real other heroes. (was playing as Pariden and could expand fast)
Huge balanced map, dense monsters on hard, dense resources and magic, max wildlands and events, normal pacing, 12 challenging AIs.
I don't finish games, not sure how high I could level. I spent like 15 hours on one game, got to like turn 300something, my sov was level 20ish, but she was a commander with the +40% army exp traits, +60% personal exp traits, +25% exp buff, and +25% faction exp starting trait. I was also playing with all conclaves, farming as much mana as I could, and spamming the +25 exp spell on her as often as possible.
I play with those settings because like I said, I don't finish games. I like exploring the map, killing lairs, expanding my civ, interacting with the other leaders, and I feel like each game is a world that I don't want to "destroy" by ending it. Big worlds full of stuff to do last longer.
Before this thread I was always playing with everything on normal settings and a bit more random events then normal, (expert/expert)
After seeing this thread I feel like I want to try some settings and find out a good one for getting more fun out of the game.
Thanks for opening up new possibilities for me, i will follow the thread and try the settings people mention.
I typically play with:
Medium map and 5 opponents.
Plenty of quests and random events because I like them.
Sometimes I will use sparse resources because I don't like the city spam and that seems to help curb it.
Sometimes I will use dense monsters to get lots of XP, but that tends to take away my ability to conquer the world... Unlike Sanati, I have this quirk that forces me to finish my games.
