Just had two battles in a row, one with a few bandit groups, another with two drakes and got nearly the same xp (32-34).
Exp does seem wonky. Ive gotten like 10 exp for killing a dragon at lv 10 and any army made of units or champions only gives like 2-4 exp.
I can't figure out the pattern, if there is any. I sometimes get more exp for killing a few mites than a group of ogres and skeletons. All in all the exp sucks horribly and after like 3 hours in each game I've played my sov has only gotten to like level 6 or 7.
Same in my games...
Often I get more xp vs weak opponents (~10-20) than strong or deadly (<10)...
If you have more than one champion in a stack, the exp is divided between the champions. Could that be what you're seeing? For example, if get 10 exp points for a battle, with one sovereign or champion he gets all 10 points. But if you have one sovereign and one champion, each gets 5 points.
Also, monsters give more exp than AI armies for some reason.
There's a formula for how xp distribution works in this thread.
There is definitely something strange going on with XP. I killed a dragon and got 34 XP for it. Another hero got 40 XP from killing 4 Ignys a round later. I'm now 23 hours into a game on a huge map and my Sov is only level 17. Every AI Sov is ahead of me. That is usually not the case. The leveling is way to slow. The champions are absolutely unable to keep pace with my regular units. I tried leveling champions with Quest Maps but got nowhere. I hope this is a bug or gets changed, because otherwise champions are completely useless to me.
It's great to be linked to when quoted, but the hard part is the amount of xp that a monster stack is originally worth, before any dividing. I've had a look in the xml files, and it appears that on some difficulty ratings there is a combat rating to xp multiplier, implying that xp is calculated based on unit combat ratings.
And different abilities have combat ratings assigned to them (CoreAbilities.xml)
Presumably there are combat ratings for hp, armour and attack values too.
Tip: quest exp is not shared by heroes, is good to get questing together.
Still, the xp rates in LH so far feels really slow, and I confirm that enemy sovereigns have somehow a faster rate.
Maximixing xp on my sovereign I got to level 19, while my other heroes were between 11 and 16, and at the same time enemy sovereigns were 23-26
Well it certainly makes that +25 exp spell more useful. I've resorted to spamming that as often as possible. It's closer to 50 exp per 200 mana with the general +exp% traits.
After a few more hours ingame...
Yeah, the xp reward system isn't rewarding after all... Should be set back to FE standards, that's rewarding! For example, same stuation in FE & LH:
It's mid-late game, my hero is quite strong, has a good army with him and on his way around he discovers a DRAGON...
Thoughts in FE:
Hell, a dragon, it's goin' to be a hell of a fight, he could burn my whole army to ashes, but who cares, killing the dragon will give tons of xp, so ... ATTAAAACK!!!!
Thoughts in LH:
Hell, a dragon, it's goin' to be a hell of a fight, he could burn my whole army to ashes, ... , uh, THAT way looks interesting, there are ... trees, yeah, maybe there are some bears, a few of them give the same xp, and the dragon isn't close to my cities, so ... yeah, these trees over there lookin' good, I just go over there...
Everything else in LH is just lookin' great, but imho the xp rewarding system isn't rewarding and breaks some fun...
