As someone brought up an RPG with typically turn-based strategic combat in my other thread on turn-based strategy games, I thought I'd make another thread here for that.
So you can keep only one RPG, now and in the future. Which one would it be?
My own choice? Planescape: Torment. Though Ultima VII and Betrayal at Krondor are both close runner-ups. Well, and probably Morrowind.

Baldur's Gate II
I know I'll probably get flak but Skyrim. I'm a total Skyrim whore. I've had it for about 7 weeks and have over 130 hours into it. That is a personal record. It has just sucked me in with the large character selection, upgrade system where you upgrade by doing instead of assigning points. But also you can select perks to upgrade areas you want. Then there's the open world. I love Skyrim. If I could have only one game ever it would be Skyrim.
Drakensang: The Dark Eye would be my runner up choice.
I've looked at Betrayal at Krondor. I may have to get that since you've recommended it again.
This is a different question that "What is the best RPG of all time?". Many RPGs have great stories or gameplay, but we are saying this is the only one you will have to play. It would have to be one with a lot of replayability. AS much as I loved torment, I really don't think I could sit and play it over and over as my one RPG. I could probably play Vampires: Bloodlines over and over, and pretty much have and still do. I think I would have to pick between Vampire: Bloodlines, Skyrim, and Dragon Age Origins for their replayability, general fun and multiple choices in character creation. I think I would have to pick Skyrim. I can play a 100 hours in Skyrim and then start over and play another 100 hours and do very different things with a very different character.
I pick Skyrim.
Drakensang is a good choice too, I am actually playing both the Dark Eye and the River of Time at the same time now. I have beaten both several times, but got in the mood to try them again and on one computer I am playing a Dwarven Sapper and the other a Human Charlatan.
I just recently picked up the Drakensang Complete Pack. I've touched both a bit and from what I can tell I like that the UI and controls are the same through the series. Makes it easy to go back and forth between them. I can't say the same for Skyrim and Oblivion.

Planescape: Torment. There is no better. Plot. Theme. Character Development. Everything.
Second place goes to Dragon Age: Origins, because it truely is the most emersive rpg made. I wish someone would remake Planescape: Torment with the Dragon Age: Origins gaming engine. That. Would. Be. Awesome!
Third place goes to KOTOR. If I were ever knocked with amnesia, that would be the first rpg I'd play again, simply to be completely BLOWN away by the climax all over again. (however, with the climax known, the game does lose a lot of its replayability.)
I think in terms of replayability, I would also go for Skyrim. It sucks as far as plot is concerned, but it is SO easy to get lost just mumbling to yourself and wandering the mountains...
I have never tried Kotor...
Don't spoil the plot, and get it. I'm sure you can get it super cheap digitally now, or with a huge pack of older Star Wars games for $20.
Betrayal at Krondor
The writing and characters are unmatched. The writing was so good you'd find yourself reading the description of each item in your pack. Combat was solid too. Careful use of items, positioning, and timing made a difference. A true masterpiece.
If you are running Windows 7 (no idea about 8) there are some good resources on the lucasarts.com for getting the game to run stable. If you have an old XBOX (I don't have a 360 so couldn't tell you) you should not have any trouble.
For me it is baldur's gate enhaced eddition.
Morrowind GOTY. I just wanted to LIVE in that game. Hell, I still do.
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
My alltime favourite, blends magic and science to almost perfection, and a nice change from the standard fantasy or sci-fi rpgs and it was kinda unique
Live in that game? No thanks. My luck I'd be the guy with a jump ring soon to be face down.
I say, the Pathfinder RPG..... Oh, did we mean computer RPG's? . Arcanum was a fun one, an ex-girlfriend introduced me to it years ago, I didn't manage to make it very far though.

Im partial to Fallout 3 and even though ive played it to death, I still enjoy going over one more hill to see what is out there. Skyrim holds the same kinda appeal to me.
This may sound strange... but if I could live in a world where I knew for certain magic and gods really existed, I'd happily take that risk lol.

If that burnt, I would take Perihelion.
As in the other thread, Morrowind. GOTY and however many mods I can save from the flames.
Gotta be one I haven't tried yet. Think I'd go for Torchlight II.
Tell me if Action RPGs aren't allowed as choices. RPG to me includes them.
I will get the Mass Effect & Dragon Age series at some point and I believe I will like them but I KNOW I will like Torchlight II.
I did practically live in that game back in 2003. If I was not asleep I was farming Garoo for there grinders.
I was finding it impossible to answer this one.
But if we can choose MMOs AND the time period... I'd go for Everquest in it's heyday. Anyone who played will know what I mean
