Heart of the swarm comes out today!!!!! (Screaming violently like a justin bieber fan)
Back in 1999, 2000 and 2001, StarCraft was THE game for me. Played it every day after school and liked it. Actually I liked it so much that I thought that only the successor would be the next big thing in RTS games. All I wanted was the WarCraft III UI and I would be set.
Fastforward 8 years and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is here! Not only did I get it 6 months after the release, I also realized that I didn't like it. It was a bit of a slap in the face moment to realize something like that.
So I'm not getting Heart of The Swarm. No interest in StarCrafts gameplay anymore. Dawn of War made StarCraft feel outdated and Company of Heroes confirmed it.
Kamamura CZ,
Your idea of an RTS scares me. Your ideal RTS is NOT competetive.
I'm curious, whatcha think about Dawn of War & Company of Heroes?
I'm with Kamamura_CZ for once in my time on these forums. StarCraft is not an enjoyable RTS at all for me, not when I can have massive land, air, and sea battles in Forged Alliance or experience the interplanetary fleet battles in Sins of a Solar Empire. When I feel like something smaller I play mods for Dawn of War: Soulstorm (for anyone interested, you're going to love the Soulstorm release of Firestorm over Kronus/Kaurava ) or Company of Heroes where no, my infantry squads can't bring down that tank by shooting it enough with their rifles but I can always go ahead and equip them with bazookas to even the odds up.
I don't know what's wrong with me.Bought CE edition Wings of Liberty. Mildly enjoyed it, but not enough to justify the large purchase.Bought CE Edition Diablo III. Fortunately my 2 roommates and another friend of ours bought it, we all went through the campaign together, so we had a blast for a good 2 weeks with it. That made it "worth it" sorta. Haven't touched it since. I'm hoping by the time the Expansion pack comes out, it'll be worth replaying.Bought CE edition Heart of the Swarm, haven't opened it.Something is wrong with me.
Voice actor for Sarah Kerrigan in Heart of the Swarm! Perfect
I'd take it off your hands if you're interested ...
Haha, no way! I got to make all the D3 kiddies jealous with my Kerrigan wings.
As I alluded to in my previous post, I love the StarCraft universe, so I am not just going to abandon it, because StarCraft II doesn't have the annoying kind of always online (you need to be online only to get achievements, not to play the game) and the gameplay looks like an improvement over SC and BW. I haven't even actually beat SC or BW yet, though I only got them a few years ago. I am not even sure I like all aspects of the gameplay (having to build a lot of production facilities and having to be extremely fast), and yes I love other RTS games like Homeworld, Dawn of War, and Supreme Commander more, but I like SC and BW, and have never been more interested in WoL and HotS than I am now. And to amend my previous post, the tie-in stories are excellent, especially Broken Wide, Stealing Thunder, Icehouse, Cold Symmetry, Mothership, and Colossus.
Nothing is wrong with you, it's an obsolete, overhyped and mediocre product. Sure it's polished and "competitive", but so is drinking shots till one man falls under the table, it's very competitive, but at the same time, it does not fascinate everyone.
The problem of the whole RTS genre is that there is a lot of "real time", some amount of tactics, and very little strategy. It's just memorize build orders, practice their execution, and try to counter enemy units in a simple rps manner. Seeing a lot of rocks on the battlefield? Better start building papers. Lastly, you must be able to manually click all the tactical abilities in time. There, you are done.
Why it's unattractive to me? Because a true general that formulates a strategic plan never tells an individual soldier to reload his gun, to take cover and where to shoot. In a RTS, you spend majority of time doing just that, and that's why there CANNOT be any significant portion of strategy in the game. The point of these games is to drown the player in mundane.
TA and Supreme Commander games took IMO the logical step from C&C clones like Starcraft - to automate the operational functions, making units more autonomous, thus freeing the player for tactics and strategy. They introduced automated builds, complex patrol routes, behaviorial parameters for units, auto repair, and more.
Guess what - the players did not like it. They prefer to click buttons like "Chain lightning" and watch the effects.
Look at chess - simple rules, no hitpoints, no resource, no healing, no special abilities. Tons and tons of strategy, brilliant tactical arsenal. Interesting balance (knight vs. bishop).
You should probably check out Wargame: European Escalation.
WINFESTORS FTW!!!
I bought this game for the cute little locusts they're so cute and cuddly, scuttling along

That's called: "Playing the game"....
What does a general have to do with this..? Also, taking cover and aiming at the correct target is also sorted under 'playing the game'....
StarCraft have alot of mundane tasks and that's why I don't play them anymore but Dawn of War & Company of Heroes don't have that.
....You call StarCraft a C&C clone since it has alot of things you have to do manually?
Total Annihilation was liked by gamers. Don't know any numbers but many list it in their top 5 best legacy RTS. StarCraft was much more accessible though and had the best online support back then plus a great singleplayer campaign.
Supreme Commander had extreme hardware requirements on release so no surprise it didn't sell well back then. Competing against Company of Heroes didn't help it either so no surprise it didn't become a great seller.
You like chess. Well that draws the line in concrete.
I hate chess. Can't stand it. Endless, boring thinking of a type I don't like (planning ahead all the time) and no action at all....
Have to know though, whatcha think about Dawn of War & Company of Heroes ?
the best engine update for sc is it looks so much better at low settings which helps out those with low specs or who want more performance without sacrificing appearance.
Company of Heroes 2 beta starts tomorrow!!!!
Yeah, and I finally get to see some return on my pre-order investment.
i have sc 2 and sc 1 and with my current system setting running at all graphics i have a AMD 4ghz 8 core cpu with 16gb ddr3 ram with a gigabyte gtx670 2gb oc and i think that heart of the swarm isnt as bad as what ive been hearing ive been playing for over a month in tournaments and i dont see what the negativity here is about lol im just saying DONT KNOCK IT UNTILL YOU PLAY IT!!!
Heart of the swarm makes the best improvements for each race and grants more powerful units for each side. Its engine improvements are also very substantial and improve the overall gaming experience for entry level gamers and the visually inclined. Its amazing,
