It does not have to be that way. Currently in FE you can change the tech tree and the new version is automatically rendered. I added an extra can-be-researched-multiple-times tech for additional prestige and it showed properly in the tech tree.

You both make good points about the skill tree, I thought it looked a bit more hand crafted than the tech tree the first time I looked at it, but that may be because of the shape of the techs compared to the relatively small shape of the icons on the skill tree. I hope you're correct!
