In our own vaporware category we have Society.
You may recall this game that has been in various stages of development for ages.
Here’s a sneak peek GameSpy gave to it from 2005.
It had a number of radical (at the time) ideas such as being “free to play” with a “persistent world”.
So what happened? Basically we’ve been having to wait until the hardware gets to the point where we can do it. We developed our Kumquat engine for this (which is what is now the basis of our current 4X titles in development) but to do a real-time, huge scale RTS, we really need a 64-bit, DirectX 11 style game engine.
So Society may be on hold but it’s not gone or forgotten. It’s just an example of a great game concept whose day will come. Until then, it’ll have to remain in the ether of pre-production.
GalCiv 3!
I'm not much of an online gamer, but if there is a WinCustomize Club in it, I'd stop in for some brews and a game of Pool or Darts for sure.
YES! You're still making it!!!
I wondered what had happened to it. Not having the computing resources available completely slipped my mind.
What is this, a screenshot for ants?
So this would be a real time version of Travian or TribalWars? Tnx, but no thanks.
Torin, nonononono. This is Stardock making it. It's going to be amazing and totally different.
I hope these new 4X's are 64-bit engine games. Suffering from more 2GB dumps on Windows, like in Sins, would be horrifying.
From the OP:
"but to do a real-time, huge scale RTS, we really need a 64-bit, DirectX 11 style game engine"
Steven, that's in reference to Society, I'm hoping it also applies to the other games in development.
I do worry that by the time you get around to making it, the "free-to-play" fad will have passed, at least for today's generation of gamers.
(and yes, I do think it's a fad, outside of MMO's at least)
I am also really hoping your post-Elemental project (GalCiv 3) is 64-bit.
MASSIVE RTS!
WANTS !
EDIT: now that excitement has passed, I must say I wonder why people don't offer more cooperative gaming in massive RTS games or sim ilar.
Sins of a dark age should have had a commander mode, but cancelled it...
I wonder if you would do it?
