It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.
So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.
As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.
So carry on. Discuss I guess.
O.K , that will be fine. I'll remove the board tommorrow and get it packed up and shipped. I'll also be sure to include the installation and Drivers disk as well. You can P.M. me with an address. -- Ace --
Kona, I posted my opinion, you will not offend me in anyway, sounds like a good case. I only got what I did because it was a mere 20 bucks to get the PSU mounted in and with a case.
I just want that processor. Talk to starkers, we can do the swap I suggested and you will have two systems.
TAKE THAT THERMALTAKE!!!
So what I am saying is that case cost like 15bucks if you deduct shipping. That case Ace has sounds like a nice tower, probably a full tower too, not a mini.
You are being very considerate and I appreciate that more than you can imagine, but I would take that case without hesitation, so!
Also, never mind the swap, I see you need the CPU for that board from Ace. I will just order one I guess. When I do, I will send you my old one for a spare for the second system, the board you have now.
So. No return needed a short wait, and hopefully you will be going. Really sucks these snags, I wish I was paying attention, all the info I needed was there at the 3btech site, this could have went smoother. So, all of us who missed that detail on cpu support, are just as blamable. Not that we need blame anyone, just do not want you to feel at fault, okay.
Glad your back on track for a system.
When all is said and done Kona's gonna have a kick-ass system with the best of all worlds not just both. Makes me damn proud to be a part of WC. Kudos to all you guys!
Well shit...I'm in Oz too and probably have a few parts lying around although I shudder someone would use a good CRT for a monitor when they could rip the cr*p out of it and use the flyback for a HV generator to shock their friends ... anyway I definately would have a DVD drive. If noone in the states can help then let's showing what the Wizards of Oz can do!!
luv Sash
starkers gonna like you...he he.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, he's the Butler and everybody knows the Butler did it. Thanks sash.
Ace - did you get my private message?
You all sure that I didn't fry the CPU with that other dead board by trying t o fire it up? I didn't see any smoke.
I again wanted to thank everyone for making this all happen. You are a wonderful group of people and I feel privileged to call you all my friends. Trust me I will pay it forward. Thank you!
If it had been the wrong wattage maybe, but not likely, just was not compatible. No support on chipsets. We will find out 100 percent soon though. We got ya covered in case!
Meant if the processor you have was to low a wattage for the board, then maybe, but that new board took a low watt cpu, so tour probably safe.
Yes, I got your message Kona, thank-you. I'm going to send you the complete tower and motherboard assembly anyway. This is a high performance board and I think you will appreciate the added cooling capacity of the tower once you get it fired up. I spent the day cleaning it up and looking for the old drivers disk, which I could not find, but don't worry....the board was already pre-configured and it will start up just fine once you turn it on. If you want to check on updates to the drivers you can go to the ASUS website and search drivers by product name. I've included the owners manual for the board as well as the Thermaltake tower. The delay right now is finding a box big enough to ship it in. It's 17" x 20" ....so you can see, I'll probably have to go to U-Haul rental and purchase one that is that big. Things are a little crazy here in Georgia right now. We're cleaning up after the big tornado leveled Adairsville which is just down the road from me. Just getting around has been a pain. I promise I'll get this shipped out just as quickly as possible. I've got my fingers crossed that the local UPS building is still standing....I haven't checked yet. -- Ace --
The T and the Y are to close on my keyboard. Your,, not Tour.
Hey Ace...I saw that tornado on video. It looked like a freakin' monster!
Update: First thing tomorrow, as soon as the Post Office opens Win 7...... ........oops.....wrong way....... zzzzzziped! Off to Oregon. Enjoy Kona
Yeah, it was a monster Uvah, we saw it go right over our head before it touched down. It totally leveled Adairsville which is a very small town as are most in this area. The flash flooding hasn't helped matters either. AT&T and the electric company were pretty good about getting things back online quickly, we were only without internet for a day ! I'm going to try to get through it tommorrow to see if the UPS building is still operational. -- Ace --
Glad that you and your's are Okay Ace. This freaky weather needs to go!
Just hang in there Terry. With the help of this awesome community, things will work out. Eventually you could have the best of both worlds, a new, up-to-date rig and OS with plenty of grunt and your old XP rig up and running better than ever with a shiney new look to use your legacy software on. My Win 7 rig is my powerhouse, but my XP rig that I am posting on now is an old eMachines T3104 in a custom case and it gets almost as much use. I have it hooked up as a media center here in my living room.
BTW, I have the 300 watt PSU from the T3104 that I could send you when I get my taxes back, you could put that in your XP box. You would just need a couple of sata power adapters as it is all molex 4pin. I may also have an IDE HDD I could part with by then if you need it. Just let me know.
Wizard, could you please send me an inventory list! Just kidding , wow you have a lot of spare stuff. And so generous with it, you rock.
Just paying it forward. This community has been very good to me.
ZOOOM!!
Off on the Snail Mail Express!
Win 7 is on its way. I can't say how long it will take though. Enjoy!
Wizard I will take you up on the offer on the hard drive. If it is a IDE hard drive then I will need another IDE cable. If it is a SATA drive then I will need another SATA cable. I have SATA power adapters. Thanks.
Don't worry about those cables you need Kona.... I have included them in the board/tower package I'm sending you. -- Ace --
Not a problem, cables, I've got. It's not a large drive, only a Samsung 80GB IDE but that should be plenty for an XP install and loads of music or games. It will be a couple of weeks until I get my taxes back and then I'll send it your way.
Thanks. This old XP rig is using the new PSU and new hard drive. I have the old PSU and it still works, just the old drive went belly up some time ago.
OK. I'll toss the cable in anyway, I have plenty and it's always good to have a spare around when you need one.
