It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.
So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.
As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.
So carry on. Discuss I guess.
sent info, worked for me, must be a security thing where you need to be me to use it. Or appear to be me, maybe an auto login or something I did not notice. I will keep you updated. So all know I guess,, Stuff is enroute. Left Hodgkins Ill about 1130 am today.
Appear to be me:
step one: Be annoying
Step two: repeat step one
do you trust your neighbors, because now they know where the stuff is!
step one: be annoying
step two: repeat step one
Thanks again to everyone. Looks like I will be getting a few parts in tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing everything come together.
Yeah, I hope the CPU turns up in a prompt manner so you can get the build completed sooner rather than later. I'm looking forward to you posting from the new machine and reading your thoughts on it as compared to the old one. It will obviously be faster and all that, but I'm interested in how Win 8 will run on it.
Anyhow, all the best with it, and here's hoping it's a smooth build.
Stuff was in Portland last nite, hope thats close enough for them to et to your place today, happy assembling.
Well I got the case, mobo, and CPU fan in today. The case is quite nice, small but plenty of room inside. Looks like I will have no issues with system cooling, plenty of vents. Looks like I will have to use a few zip ties with the cable routing. Still waiting on everything else. Should come in next week. Thanks guys!
Ok I got in the extra two sticks of DDR2 memory today. I am still waiting on the CPU, video card, and monitor. Any word on a ETA on those things guys?
The graphics card should be on its way by Monday. Boxed up and ready to mail.
Thank you Wizard. Good to know.
I still got five days to go. The suspense is killin' me! I need the first to hurry up and get here. Maybe if i don't pay attention to it.
No update here. I think you are at the mercy of the ebay seller on the monitor. I did notice the sale ended on that item, so should be soon, I hope, for your benefit.
Seller should have sent you an email when he shipped it. Did you tell him to ship it to me or is it on it's way to you?
Good luck with that Uvah. we are all focusing so much on this for awhile now, hard to not think about it. Hang in there , its coming.
Oh my god! Its coming to you Kona, I sent the seller an email, will see if I get a response. Other than that I have no way to track. EBAY SUCKS.
Agreed. I haven't done the eBay thing in years.
Kona. I sent you a pm with a tracking number. It was hidden in my email through thunderbird. I could not log on at ebay, no account, If you have one you should be able to track. I will let you know if I get a email from the seller.
Looks like it's due here on Monday, thanks.
Hope it all comes Monday for ya. That suck, I know.
Well I put a bit of the new computer together tonight. I sorted through the PSU wires and organized them with zip ties for the best possible air flow and arrangement. I took the DVD-RW drive out of the old computer since it wasn't working under Windows there anyhow and installed it in the case. I also spent a good 20 minutes installing the I/O shield. It just didn't want to fit.
Doortech - The monitor showed up today.. The eBay listing on the receipt said it is a 15" monitor with VGA and power cords. All the seller sent was just the monitor, no cables. I have a power cable for the monitor, just no VGA cable.
Nothing else has shown up yet.
Damn kona, don't even have VGA cables. Everyone has those.
