Hey all. I bought rebellion a few months ago and I've been playing mostly offline with some of my real life friends. I decided to start playing online because I was getting more involved and wanted to play more often. I've now played about 20 games and I've run into a trend that I greatly dislike...
It seems like the majority of players online just want a fast, rush style game. Sometimes they are 5v5, 3v3, FFA whatever the basic idea seems to be the same. All settings to faster and try to rush your opponent as fast as possible to win. I understand that this strategy works and that the highly competitive players do this to win. My issue is that it seems like the vast majority of players online have this mentality. As if everyone was playing for money or something. I see thread after thread about people trying to maximize their outputs and do every click planned and thought out. There is even a thread where one player tells another that he was 1 min late getting a certain ship out...
The point of this thread is that I'm looking to find people that play for fun and not min/max gaming. That kind of gaming is best left for starcraft or similar fast paced RTS. To me, this game is a slower paced, more laid back RTS and that's what I enjoy about it so much. I can get up and go to the bathroom and not worry that I missed 30 seconds of microing my techs lol.
I've only played 20 games so I know it's a small sample size, but are there players like this online? If so where is a good place to find casual players? The lobby never has more than 5 people in it and they are either AFK or looking to join a 5s skilled game.
Also I don't want anyone to get confused, casual does not mean bad player. I do quiet well online even though I hate the fast paced style. I'm something like 16-4 in my 20 games, mostly in those fast paced skilled games. My desire is to find players who are more laid back and willing to play at a slower and more enjoyable pace. I like games that last two hours as opposed to thirty mins.
Thanks
Helpful hints from a recent replay thread.
I know exactly how you feel blazenfury. You should hang out Friday evenings / saturday evenings with the crew over at Carbon's Pew Pew Fun Zone on Team Speak. Sometimes it's empty but most times it's full of a usual crowd that plays a mix of slow / fast setting games. We usually pick mods that we've never played before and try them out (which is absolutely hilarious). We're pretty laid back and casual, usually FFA with locked teams and pirates on or off.
Be warned, it can get kind of 'crazy' on the chat sometimes, but then it mellows out.
Here's the thread (go to the last few posts as those are current. The OP is out of date):

hi
I'm interested in a longer and slower game, I also dislike a bit those rushtokilltheotherone before even building any economy, and the thing you mentioned, that I cannot even look elsewhere for 30 seconds or I will get killed ASAP.. A game for just fun would be great, to have a break within those competitions.
PM me if you need me for your game.
Thanks for the reply guys! My play name is Frenzic. I'll most definitely look for you guys on team speak! Would be great to join a little community of like minded players.
I'm still not sure what my steam name is as I'm not a steam user, I was forced into it by getting this game. I think its Blazenfury... Try to add me as a friend or post your name and I'll add you
I think I have just added you on Steam... not entirely sure though as there are more than one with your name.
We really should have a longer game sometimes.
I did not see an invite but my name is apparently http://steamcommunity.com/id/Frenzic
Mostly we are trying to get a game finished before minidumps end it for us.
I'm assuming you are one of the fast paced players? I have not had a minidump error in a very long time. Few months ago they happened so often that my friends and I had to save every 5 mins lol.
Either way, I don't knock your playstyle. Each person enjoys the game differently, I'm just looking for some who enjoy it like I do
Part of the problem is the maps that most people play on. The style of play you want is best found on custom maps, such as many of the maps in my map pack.
http://TinyURL.com/Sins20
Unfortunately, custom maps don't auto-download.
There's also a practical problem with non-rush type maps (you start near your allies, away from your opponents) with larger player counts--the games will take longer to play and once everyone has economies and large fleets, they will LAG!
Sadly, as a practical matter, as long as this game is single-threaded and not multicore, 4v4 and 5v5 games on those types of maps end up being impractical.
I added you on Steam, I go by the name Ashanti
Thanks, I downloaded your maps and will try them this week
Are there any maps where there are two clearly defined sides? With a gap in the middle for the warzone?
I actually have made tons of maps for my friends and I. The issue is that there is always a balance issue that I did not forsee. I'm pretty good at making maps as far as symmetry and geometry.
I've never lagged in Sins its always the other players that lag and cause the game to lag. I have a 4 ghz quad core but as you said, only one is used. I turn off trade ships and other fluff because that is a HUGE help. Those fluff options really kill your computer as they are not optimized well.
Would you care to play sometime?
Yes I accepted you. Look forward to getting some games in
you accepted me? I don't see it, it shows that you haven't done it yet
The maps you're looking for are:
Asteroid Belt
Red Crush
Ring of Risk
Gateway to Paradise
The Mosh Pit
Warring Systems
Diamond 4v4 near
Maps with the tag (team together)
Unpinning everything from you empire tree also helps reduce lag quite a bit. I run a cpu that has 3.3ghz on each core so Sins doesn't lag out until I get into the 20-25 hr mark with long crazy games with friends. Often by then each faction's doom is fairly imminent.
YOU CAN UNPIN THINGS???? Caps lock to illustrate my insane happiness at hearing this!
That's going to be so helpful when I get back in, thanks!
morvegil on steam add me
It is finicky in the game, as far as unpinning items. But in your settings window when you're in the game you can turn off 'auto-pinning' of items. It really does help.
I tried this last night and could not get it to work. I unchecked it in settings and tried to unpin on the side but still every planet i took got auto placed up there. I tried pinning and unpinning and they still stayed up there
Like I said, in game it is a pain and sometimes it doesn't work. However, before starting a new game make sure the below circled settings are unchecked. (Ignore the Battle Star Galactica HUD ... it's from the Sins of the Fallen mod.)
Thanks Boshimi! It kind of works now, just not exactly the way I wanted it to. Still its better than before, much appreciated!
I generally like slower paced games. The "Go kill the other dudes right now" mentality is one of the reasons I try to do SP only, the other big one being my nocturnal lifestyle. Not a lot of people on at midnight. However if we set up a game ahead of time, I can get up or stay up late enough to play.
Player and Steam name is Twilight_Storm.
-Huzzah!
Added.
Confirmed.
I also dislike the IPLAYTOWINONLYONEONEONE!!! mentality. The majority of people I meet across online gaming sessions seem to forget it's just that - games. There's a difference between trying to play well and OCD'ing into this winatallcosts style thinking. This is a refreshing change! If you see me online, I'm your man.
