RPS has a post mortem of sorts on a bunch of different kickerstarter projects and where are they now. Has anyone given money to a KS project and how did it work out?
Hard to say yet, a lot of the ones that have been successfully kickstarted haven't been finished and released yet. I think it's really too soon to tell yet.
Kickstarter only started recently with big projects (multimilion) and those said would deliver not before end of summer 2013 (and probably later). It is way too early for this question.
I think that its a safe bet with large established companies coming along and fund-raising a new product. It is definitely risky when you are giving money to an idea without either a working prototype or a talented team of people who can bring it to life. Also, in terms of the delays... its video game development. There will ALWAYS be delays.
Project Eternity was my first KS I funded. Then Star Citizen. Both aren't due until 2014 at the earliest. But both have tons of updates and very hopeful on them. I've also backed Shadowgate. Much smaller game and more a puzzle/adventure game. But they already have a lot of it built so it's pretty much a sure thing to come out. Last is Limit Theory which is still in funding stage (but will get it's funding). I've funded that one mainly because it was cheap and it's a one-man operation who already has a great working technical demo.
I don't back anything that "smells" or seems over ambitious because I simply don't want to lose my money if they fail. I've passed on a few that have actually funded but I figure I'll buy them *if* they come out when they go on super Steam sale.
