I don't have time to play a lot of different games but I saw this one and thought I would mention it as it might have some appeal here.
Kickstarter
Author's Site
This is a procedurally produced universe space sim with missions, planetary interactions, research and npcs. The current work will be a single player game though down the road he hopes to have networking for MP.
His Kickstarter goal is $50k and he has already raised $47k of it. You can get a DRM free digital game copy on release starting at a $15 donation.
This game particularly looks like it might appeal to Sins and Galactic Civilizations players.
What's impressive about it is it is using a custom engine to handle the physics of ship flight, planets, etc. as well as handle universe generation ..and it's all been devised and coded by the project creator in under three months with no one working on it but himself.
Sins and GalCiv players will definitely at least want to look over this project and I hope some of you might help the guy get where he's going--looks really worthwhile.
In brief, Limit Theory is:
That it does. and very gorgeous too.
but very very scarce information.
How so..? Have you watched all ten developer monthly videos..? Did you read the post from the previous 3 pages..?
This project is coming up on one year anniversary successful Kickstarter launch... Have you read all the post and updates from here..?
Take the time and READ thoroughly everything he has posted...
If you still don't get it, wait till the game drops and watch the reveiws...
from kickstarter yes. not all of its info but yes.
Greetings all, it's that time again. In update #11 of Limit Theory, Josh talks about AI (Artificial Intelligence) and UI (User Interface). But he really gets in depth into his UI Node style interface which is something to see. Those of you wanting to see graphics porn gonna have to wait, this update is more function and style then flash and wow.
Sit back and enjoy on what is shaping up to be a pleasure to play when it finally releases and not to think of the somewhat, underwhelming X Rebirth release which has caused sadness in the Space Games community. Of course, there is Star Citizen, but that is at least 2 years away...
Stardock please talk to this young developer when you are putting together your Sins 2 team. He's crazy good. And a work ethic that I am envious of.
backs out of the room slowly...
Happy New Year everybody. And with the new year, we have a new update from Josh. It's been a whole year since this adventure started and it has been a ride that I've enjoyed. Please enjoy his latest vid, going to bed with pew, pew dreams.
This guy is incredible. I still doubt he'll be able to finish the game as he envisioned it on his own, which is also why I haven't backed his project. I don't have enough money to just throw it around sadly, though this guy seems awesome enough to support his talent even if the game is never finished.
You also haven't backed his project because you can't back his project No funding options at this point and there hasn't been for a year now.
Anyways,I do expect Josh to be able to get the game out of the door, perhaps not in fully envisioned state, but certainly good enough to impress and open to improving down the line.
Regardless, while I would gladly do so at this point, I have also not funded the game as I discovered after the Kickstarter. If nothing else, it's nice to see someone taking the budget they asked for and putting all their efforts into making the product they announced without asking for more money all the while, nor even accepting it.
I am much more impressed with this guys approach than say, the ever expanding bloat of a project that Star Citizen appears to be.
Oh, I knew about it while KS was active, I just didn't think it was feasible for the project to be brought to a successful end by one guy and the low funds he was asking for - those didn't allow him (IMO) to get any real help. I do wish for him that I was very wrong.
Sup guys, LT Dev Update #13 is on tap and Josh shows off new scanner and HUD UI implementation. Game development is coming along very nicely. Well, I got snow to move so enjoy the vid...
It looks very much like Starpoint gemini 2, but spg2 is much further into development. Yet this does look classier.
Hey all, first. Wow, wow, WOW!!! Josh has raise the bar again in this month's update. In Dev update #14, he shows off his ice fields, most impressive. And mining. Yes, mining and I'm impressed. He's come a long way this past year and he isn't done by far. Limit Theory will be a joy to play and lose time when it hits. Enjoy the vid, I need to find some salt for this new storm that's bout to hit the East coast again...
If this guy pulls it through to an enjoyable game I'm buying it even though I won't be able to play it. He's just that cool.
Still mad that I missed the kickstarter. If steam gets an early access I'll buy it. Looks really good. I have a feeling that its release window may be summer 2014 not early 2014. But that's fine.
Alright gang, it's that time again. This is Limit Theory Dev Update #15. Josh is a few days late on this update, (It's okay, we forgive you.) This month he showcases economy and trade, supply and demand. Those of you who has played the X games, LT will follow those same themes.
But the real showcase, (i.e. eyecandy.) Are the NPC ships buzzing back and forth between an asteroid field and a space station. Just like in Sins, when you create a trade port, the trade ships travel between other trade ports in a system. Same deal, but ramped up to a 100.
Josh, I rather for you to be late because when you have this masterpiece ready, I'm taking days off...Enjoy the vid below...
Kickstarter=blackmail.
I do not like this type of way for the creation of games, nobody guarantees the release from the game and I´m sure that there are many proyects which they will not be finished even a million of years.
If people want make games or other things selling them at the end, they should not use this system. At least from me, they will not take a $.
I think KickStarter is great. It allows indie developers with a great idea to get the funds they need to realize themselves. I put more money on kickstarter and indie games than I did in AAA titles during the last 3 years.
If your argument is that threre are no guarantee that the game will come to be, well maybe there aren't. But guarantees are a modern concept, a couple hundred years ago humans did not even have guarantee that there would be food next month. They still went forward though when they thought something was a good idea. Kickstarter is kind of the same thing. I don't thrown my money around blindly on it, I only do it when my gut feeling tells me its a good idea.
Now, as to the reliability of kickstarter, it is a bit early to have a very good idea as projects like games are long to develop. But if you look at the list of kickstarted games and sort them from earliest, you will notice that the majority of earliest kickstarter games were indeed completed. They also received decent reviews in average. Certainly no worse than what big commercial studios have been doing.

IMO Kickstarter games, and AAA companys have an equal chance of success at creating their game. Only difference is with Kickstarter "WE" are funding the game. Kickstarter games IMO have an edge, because the developer is passionate about the games they are building. Unlike AAA games that pump out mediocre titles for a quick buck. We are essentially buying the game before its even made. Taking a risk on an investment. Which there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. People take risks on investments all the time in the markets.
This guy is awesome, period.
Quite amazing what a skilled and motivated individual can accomplish .
Alllll righty then. It's that time with this month's Dev Update #16 from Josh, creator of Limit Theory. Before I continue, I need to say this...Josh, please. Take my money NOW!!!!
Gang, your eyes will cry when you see this. While Josh does his talkover over the video, you will see miner NPC's ships mining, you will also see pirate NPC's ships attacking said NPC's miner ships. And the graphics are glorious....
He goes into advance trading and making money but once again, Josh has raised the bar on this update...My fellow space gamers, let your eyes drink in this fabulous Limit Theory Kool-Aid...
Seriously, JOSH TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!!
You can see that this guy is working really hard on his project, massive props to him. I will probably buy it even though it is not my favored type of game.
I have seen nothing but polite and cool things from this guy. So impressed.
It does seem very good considering only one person is developing it. Let us hope he doesnt develop "burnout" like us modders do from time to time. Ill be keeping an eye on this one.
I cannot imagine after he releases his own project him not being contacted by a publisher or investors about releasing an expanded game.
