Have installed Fences on Windows 8.
Tried it on a laptop I tried Windows 8 out on a week or so ago, and now have put it on a Windows 8 Pro (x64) install...
On laptop Fences behaved fine. Well, it behaves fine on the Windows 8 Pro on my main computer BUT it takes about 15 seconds to load after windows finishes loading. I have no desktop Icons until Fences finally loads (or perhaps loads straight away but nothing shows for 15 seconds or so). The machine boots in about 5 seconds or so, so its really annoying that Fences takes all this time to load before my PC is all ready to use.
Any suggestions??
I only bought it a couple of weeks ago, has there been a new version that solves any of this, is it a common problem??
I think Chris (contact64) has found the circumstances that cause the slow start of Fences!
After reading his post, I put all of my folder shortcuts on my Desktop into Recycle.bin and Fences opened up normally on every reboot! So, the slow startup also happens with shortcuts linking to folders with lots of files!
As I added folder shortcuts back into a fence, the time that it took for Fences and icons to appear took proportionately longer. I put the folder shortcuts back in into Recycle.bin and created a folder in one of my fences. I then restored the folder shortcut and put them in the folder. This also resulted in normal startup of Fences! I'll keep the shortcut there until a fix is available.
I know that Fences also has a Portals feature for folders, but I prefer having all of the options that File Explorer offers. I haven't tested whether it also causes slow Fences startup.

Hi guys,Any progress on getting this issue sorted yet?Very annoying every time to right click at EVERY boot up!Any new BETA's or something we can try yet?
This is driving me nuts.
I got a reply from the ticket I raised
I may have a work-around for you if you have networked shortcuts on your desktop.Create a folder somewhere on your PC (I might use My Documents).Move all your networked shortcuts from the desktop to that folder. Now create a folder portal fence linked to that directory. You can do that by holding the [Alt] key down while dragging the folder to the desktop or by clicking and dragging on the desktop and selecting "Create Folder Portal here"If that fails or if you do not have shortcuts to networked locations, please download and run the following utility: http://sd.stardock.com/SDSupportTool.exe This is a tool that we use to gather relevant log files and basic information about your computer. Once the utility finishes running, please send back the .zip file it creates on the desktop.

So, it appears they know about the problem, and the workaround does what it says. I can only assume there is something with the way that Fences works that means a solution is not straight forward and isn't a priority as most non-corporate users don't have networked shortcuts on their desktop.
I'm having this exact same issue. My system is not slow, it's the application. Below are a minimal list of my specs:
That is my main system and I cannot get Fences to load within 5 minutes of startup. I'm constantly forced to create a new fence and delete it to re-enable the desktop. I can also go into the settings and disable, then enable Fences to get it to work as well. Both are an inconvenience. But considering that I never shut down my main system, I rarely have to deal with it. However, on my main work laptop, I'm having the exact same issue. So here's my work laptop's specs if they help:
As you can see, both systems should have zero trouble booting up with no lag. I've tried to set the process to high-priority on startup, I've tried optimizing boot to load only the bare essentials AND Fences. Nothing works until I create a new Fence and delete it. I hope this info helps and I hope we'll have an update soon that fixes this issue.
EDITED: Yesterday fix no longer works Today.
This worked for me Thank you foereaper
1: Disable Fences as a start-up item in Task Manager
2: Open elevated CMD and run sc create Fences binPath="%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Stardock\Fences\Fences.exe" start=auto
Interesting solution to run as service...
Fixed this problem a while back by just adding fences.exe to startup.
I have now picked up the same issue again with Windows 10 preview build 10565...Will try the above and see if it solves it.
EDITED: Yesterdays fix no longer works Today.
Agreed, didn't work for me either....Waiting for new Windows 10 build, might be resolved then...

Well, if you have a solution ,then please help...Too much info on this forum to put into tickets and also many tickets for this issue have been raised, yet we still haven't got a proper solution yet...So at this stage, any help is good help.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
Using windows 10 and nothing has changed since windows 8.1 time.
No matter it is Fences 2 or 3.
Fences are loaded 5-10-15 seconds after desktop is shown during startup.
Icons which are on the desktop but not in fences also not shown before fences loaded.
p.s. support ticket created. no response at the moment.
WOW, this is still going....If memory serves me right, I think it had something to do with Admin rights on the Fences.exe file.
If you remove the "Run as Admin" option, it should work. For some or other reason Win 10 has issues running programs set to run as Admin.Let me know if this helps....

I joined the Stardock forums to thank you - This issue was killing me - blamed my AV software and ended up buying a different one before I realised it was Fences - thank you so much again.
