Apart from bloody Balmer the economist running a tech company...
I want to make one thing clear.. Windows 7 is the best operating system to have ever been released by Microsoft..
Windows 8 is the worst piece of shit in the whole history of microsoft and i can probably guess theres some kind of espionage thing going on where they convert all user hate mail about the new ui to positive reviews.
Anyway --i think this is the best for everyone because now we can all buy macs. Awesome!

Good old Starkers. Microsoft fanboi behavior at it's best.
Ya know, kona, I use Windows because it is convenient and runs all my programs, but I'm no MS fanboi. There's stuff about Microsoft and Windows that I don't like, and I've voiced those concerns at various times in these forums over the years. It's true, I am not at all fond of Apple, what with the appalling worker conditions in its China operations; its frantic pursuit of patents [whether it invented it or not]; its endless legal challenges to stifle competition; its relentless greed. However, my dislike of Apple doesn't make me a MS fanboi anymore than my dislike of Google makes me a Yahoo fanboi. I just choose what I perceive as the lesser of two evils, that's all... nothing more, nothing less
As for Apple's run coming to an end and Microsoft getting it's second wind, I'm just saying it as I see it. Microsoft will more than just succeed with its shift in direction, while Apple has used all its innovative trump cards and has become somewhat stale and lacking, and this is not just my opinion. It's all over various sites across the internet [Nokia; HTC; Samsung; LG] that people are disenchanted with IOS, the iPhone and other Apple products... that they are turning, or have turned, to more practical, intuitive and innovative alternatives to the iPhone, Ipad, iPod, etc. Don't just take my word for it, google it for yourself and you'll see that this is so. There are even WC members who are saying it, in this and other threads.
Oh, and don't try to say that this is not showing in the sales figures. Of course it wouldn't be, not at this time. It began with the iPhone 4S, which was very slow on the uptake and sold poorly as compared to other releases, largely because even the hardest of Apple's fans saw absolutely no reason to go with a partial upgrade. However, the rot started more with the iPhone 5 and how it was a major disappointment even to the most loyal Apple fanbois... the maps debacle that saw Apple red faced and making excuses... firing dozens of staff in a token gesture to give customers a [false] sense of 'it won't happen again'. And those firings, that's a mistake Apple will live to regret.
Then there was the Mini iPad non-event... with its non-Retina display and a below par camera that disappointed Apple fans yet again. In essence, it was/is a poor imitation of 7" tablets already out there, so yeah, a trend has begun because Apple peaked a while ago and is on the decline, while Samsung [mainly] and others are on the rise. Obviously, these are fairly recent events, and obviously they are not going to impact on Apple's immediate sales and/or profits but it will eventually. Like I said, give it 2 to 3 years, and Apple will be an also ran, languishing mid-race an falling well behind the front runners But shed no tears for Apple, they had 10 good years.
You think Apple is on the downhill trend? Whatever. All it will take is a new iPhone or better iPad or another OSX revision with new features and it will be right on top.
Sadly, for Apple, it's going to take a whole lot more than that, and frankly, going by what's left of its talent pool [now missing Steve Jobs] and IOS as stale as 2 month old bread, I just don't think they have it in them. And why is it I keep referring to IOS and not OS-X? That's because it is Apple's portable division that's making all the money/is most profitable.... and IOS is what it runs on.
As it is, Google has stolen Apple's portable crown, with Android devices far exceeding the number of iPads and iPhones out there, and then you have Microsoft, Samsung and a dozen other companies all snapping at Apple's heels with portable Win 8 devices. Now don't scoff and say that Win 8 devices are a fail, because they are far from that, and when the majority of people realise just how damned good they are, the arse will fall right out of Apple's mobile market. Believe me, I have a Win 8 phone and it runs rings around any Android I or the missus have had, and in the phone shop, when I was handed an iPhone 5 to compare with the Nokia Lumia 820, honestly, it was slow and paled into insignificance beside the W8 Nokia phone. Don't believe me, then ask the dozen or so former iPhone owners here at WC, who now have a W8 phone instead.... or better still, go to You tube and search 'Smoked by a W8 phone".
As for OS-X, it will always play second fiddle to Windows, regardless of how many new features it gets. As for Win 8 not being well received, well that's history repeating itself, don't you think? Nobody liked the changes Vista brought about until Win 7, and the same thing will happen here. When Win 9 is released it'll be the bees knees and all will be right with the world again, so regardless of what you and other doubters think of Windows 8, it is the gateway to the future of computing and OS-X will bust a nut trying to catch up.
In a nutshell, then, Steve Jobs was the innovator and visionary at Apple, and with his passing the company has lost much more than just a CEO. When he passed, Apple lost the engine that propelled it forward; the spark that ignited brilliance; the glue that held it together, and without him, the Apple of today is merely riding on his coat tails, his innovation and successes. So, when it counts most, and Apple needs to produce that something special to remain competitive, it'll become more than evident that the required spark of brilliance expired with its former founder.
And I will continue to spread the word to all I know that Windows 8 and Windows 8 devices are crap.
Doubt it. Windows 9 will be even more locked down and even more charges will be introduced. Mark my words they will keep the desktop but it will be hard to get to or use. They will come out with a new way to switch between apps and the Metro UI will be the center piece.
As for Apple I don't see them going down any time some or in the future.
Now that would be alright if you had any real 1st-hand experience with them and could comment with some authority.
Now now, we do know there is one thing kona is the 'authority' on eh? Everything.....
I have had a few people talk to me about how they do not like the fact that Microsoft took away the traditional Start menu and do not want to use a third party app to bring it back. They would rather rather stick to Windows 7.
That may be so, but that does not make Win 8 a bad OS... nor the people saying it experts. They are just opinions at the end of the day, and to base your own opinion on the opinions of people who simply don't like it doesn't qualify you to comment on it with any great authority.
Which, of course, gives you enough win 8 knowledge to "continue to spread the word to all I know that Windows 8 and Windows 8 devices are crap."
I just hope the people you convince know where your authority to condemn the OS came from.
It comes from the Internets ....where everything is true ....
Geebus you guys talk too much I don't even know what page I was on when I was last here.
With regards to WinRT at least, of course it's going to replace Win32 (not sunset it, but replace it for the majority of development.)
But it's ridiculous to think that the feature set of WinRT today will be the same in a few years, it's a new platform. Is .NET 4.5 the same as 1.0?
Heh.
And now I'm probably going to disappear for another five/ten/whatever pages.
more likely developers will just ignore it, just as they ignored MS Silverlight (anybody remembers that?), if Microsoft does not stop legacy app support.
it's kinda amusing though most of the MS fans here post Windows 8 is great, but on the other hand they do not want MS to continue on what they started with Windows 8.
You can't ignore WinRT since it'll be the only interface. That's the whole point of it, that you can't ignore it.
And, yes it's funny that most 'W8 is great' people here are the ones who use Start replacements.
I am glad you and moshi said *most* and not *all* since I am a huge fan of Win8, have updated most of my systems that are actually running MS OS's to Win8 and have even waded into the business-foray with Win8 in tow.
I for one am glad the annoying "start button", the button everyone likes to click on 10,000 times a day but more than half of the time never go anywhere from the actual button anyway is finally GONE!
I will never, and I mean never.......bring that bastard back!
And where does Microsoft go if the 3rd party devs ignore it for dropping legacy support? It is, after all, their bread and butter, what they've based their entire programming regimes upon. I mean, really, why would Adobe and Corel support MS in its RT aspirations after having the rug pulled out right from under them. More to the point, how is Corel or Adobe going to develop a complex and resource intensive content creation/editing suite for an underpowered OS that's designed for very low-end Atom processors?
Besides, it makes no sense for Microsoft to cut its partners throats like that. Without those software partners, MS has no real reason to develop an OS... apart from a few piddling apps [no offense to developers of those], there'd be eff all to run on it and the failure of Win ME would then be considered a great success in compaison. Frankly, I believe you three, Savyg, yourself and petrossa, are reading far too much into this and that Windows RT is simply a portable extension of the legacy desktop.... that users and 3rd party devs have nothing to worry about. So no, it's not that I'm afraid that MS will "continue what they started". No, I'd be more worried if Apple found the cash reserves and balls to mount a takeover and called it Windows OS-X. Smug Edition.
Yeah, that's frickin' terrible, isn't it. Heaven forbid that anyone would want to add anything to an OS to make it look, work, feel better. You're right, it should be considered a crime and perpetrators oughta be slapped in irons and fed just bread and water. I mean, how dare they! After all, MS created the perfect OS that's aesthetically pleasing in every way and idolators who attempt to change it in any way should be harshly dealt with by a dominatrix of their own choosing. And me, well I should go over Miss Spanky's knee first. Not only have I Start8 and Decor8 installed, I have CFX, IconPackager, Soundpackager and Fences as well, so I'm either a repeat offender, a multiple offender, or both.
It's perfectly normal, as long as you don't insist on giving everyone with an opinion either the 'fanboy' or the 'hater' tag, and refuse to believe people might actually like some parts of win 8 and dislike others.
Just to add some MORE fuel to the fire,
winRT is for the ARM processor family, NOT the intel i-x86 family and can not run on the intels,
BUT the win32 & win64 CAN
of course, but the "big" changes are the touch-optimized Metro "dashboard", the Metro apps, the store and the removal of Aero and the start menu from the legacy desktop. and the loudest MS fans here do not want MS to continue this path and do not even believe MS will do so.
sure, there are other changes, but would these justify a whole version jump? it boots faster ... great, still not as fast as the ancient Amiga Workbench.
i hope MS will revert most of these changes. i don't think everybody at MS likes what the Windows team has done. as long as MS Office stays a legacy app there's hope.
personally i think some stuff that WinRT offers is great (single folder install, no access to the filesystem without permission for example) are great, but be sure those loudest fans i have in mind do not have the slightest clue about that.
great. now finally tell me where i can get the Google Mail and Maps apps you claim to run.
That's Windows RT, not WinRT. WinRT apps run on x86 perfectly fine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_RunTime
Windows Runtime, or WinRT, is a platform-homogeneous application architecture on the Windows 8 operating system. WinRT supports development in C++/CX (Component Extensions, a language based on C++) and the managed languages C# and VB.NET, as well as JavaScript and TypeScript. WinRT applications natively support both the x86 and ARM architectures, and also run inside a sandboxed environment to allow for greater security and stability.
Yep.. you do that... based on word of mouth instead of legit hands on experience. No big shocker there at all. How much more smoke do you really think you can try to blow up the ass of people here?
