Lighting Fix / Blur Removal 1.01Download 1.01 - Lowered character brightness, added more saturation

When I first saw the strategy map and saw that you could rotate and pivot the view around, my first impression was, this looks pretty good for a top down 4x game. But there was one weird thing I began to notice. Characters, buildings, and some other objects on the map and tactical view were all basically lit only at certain angle. Rotate the camera around to the other side and the only thing you can see are heavily shadowed dark figures, as seen here:http://i.imgur.com/SPvl3.jpgAnother thing I noticed is how hazy and blurred everything was... it looked upscaled. I'm used to playing stuff at native resolution (who isn't??) on PC, so this bugged me quite a bit. Looking through the code, a full screen blur effect is being applied. Not just bloom, but also blur. As a result, texture detail is smudged out. I get that they wanted to have a dreamy like quality to the graphics but I think it's a bit much.
So what I've done is give the "dark side" an equal amount of lighting as the lit side, and reduced the full screen blur by a significant amount.Install Instructions
Just unzip it all into the <Gamedir>/Gfx/fx/fxo folder replacing the files. Backup the originals if you like.
If you like the super blur/haze look of the original, just don't use the post_hdr.fxo file in my zip.
After installing I recommend using Brightness 58, Contrast 49 in the options. Or tweak til desired.

Cool, I'll try it out for the de-blurr.
Since I don't rotate the map usually, the other fix doesn't really do anything for me.
thank you very much, I wanted something like this
whoa! brightness 58 is way too high, are you sure about that? makes everything look washed out.
Got any pics? For me it looks just like the post fix screen above. 58 worked well for me, but I guess it might vary based on desktop settings/tastes.
Yep it's mostly ok if you don't rotate the map, but sometimes the angle will be set on the dark side when you do a battle too.
I have my screen calibrated pretty well, and 50 brightness 50 contrast and this mod looked good for me. Are there any other things to mess with in the files you messed with to create this mod?
after some testing I have to say the ligthing tweaks make the lit portions of the image too bright, check the sov selection screen and you should notice
blur removal is sweet though, really makes colors and detail pop out a lot more.
after some testing with only blur removal, I agree with demicas87 50/50 ratio is good. default 48/53 is too dark.
problem is, it looks way desaturated compared to vanilla :/
pics or it didn't happen:

blur removal with 50/50 ratio: http://s1055.beta.photobucket.com/user/gekko86/media/FallenEnchantress_1351866966.jpg.html ( can't use 48/53, the hills on the left would become way too dark )
Try this file? To tone down the character brightness: DownloadI actually did bump the saturation a bit already in my fix, but I could increase that too.
Edit: Ahh ok I see your pics now. Yep it's much darker than mine at 58. But I wanted to be able to see the terrain more clearly. The game is super dark to the point some things are pitch black on default settings.

58 brightness: http://www.abload.de/img/587xob9.jpg
yeah there's way too much white in the second pic
here's a comparison with all your 3 files + fix applied with 50/50 : http://s1055.beta.photobucket.com/user/gekko86/media/FallenEnchantress_1351868932.jpg.html
fix helps a bit, but sov faces are still overly bright. could you try bumping saturation more in the post_hdr file?
Ok I lowered the brightness more on characters, upped the saturation and added to the OP now.Download
Oh thank you, i really hated this blur !
nice job on 1.01
Awesome work!
Thanks all for the suggestions and feedback I've settled on 56 bright 50 contrast now.
Thanks... I mean the text is still blurry, but nowhere near as bad as before.
Could you upload a version with only the blur fix? Would appreciate it.
just use the post_hdr file and not the other 2, it works fine
Tried this and game is incredibly dark. I just want the sharpness.
So with this mod, with Stylized Lighting on it is really dark. With Stylized Lighting off it is much brighter.
What does the Stylized Lighting setting do anyways?
Without stylized lighting everything is lit very flat and simply. With it on, you get cool sunbeam type effects and moody lighting that makes you feel like a true hero. After applying this lighting fix you should compensate for the darkness by upping the brightness in the advanced options. Although some others in this thread are good with setting it at 50, I have mine at 56-58. Contrast is best set at 50.
yeah, with blur removal applied you have to set contrast/brightness to 50/50 or it's too dark
seems like this will need an update for 1.02
