Fun fact: Atari doesn't own the Master of Magic trademark in the United States.
It was abandoned by Microprose and registered by Nival. (I couldn't find any evidence of registration in European Union countries or as a Community Trade Mark.)
Anyone who follows Nival know if they're planning a remake, like with King's Bounty?
I honestly can't play the new King's Bounty games because of the overly childish art style, so hopefully they don't continue this trend.
sod the trademark. just make a "mister of magic" instead.
I like the new Kings Bounty series, havent played the latest one Warriors of the North though. The cartoonish style is nice for it, but yeah its true i am kinda bored of cartoonish graphics in most games. The oil paint style of FE its something different and cool but cartoon graphics sometimes ruin the games. I remember when i heard that Sid Meier is making a remake of Pirates and then i saw those cartoonish graphs. Well i liked the game but i prefered the art of the old Pirates!Gold. Hope if there is gonna be a remake of Alpha Centauri they will keep a more "serious" look like the original.
On topic i didnt really know that Nival got the rights of MoM I thought that Atari had the rights in general.
The new Kings Bounty series is fantastic. Best tactical battles there is. Far beyond Heroes and Fallen Enchantress.
Nival's lawyers only own the US trademark rights for the name, Master of Magic. They don't own the US rights for the game Master of Magic, which are still owned by Atari. Microprose didn't "abandon" this. In the scramble to sell off the company's assets, they neglected this. It's simply Nival wanting to scavenge a small piece of somebody else's pie if anyone should try to redo the game using the MoM trademark. That's all.
You're probably aware that ironically Stardock was negotiating four years ago with Atari for the rights to remake MoM with release both in the US and overseas. That fell through because of Atari's stringent marketing and ownership requirements. Stardock wouldn't have been in negotiation with Atari if Nival had owned the rights to the game.
