Ok let me start by saying I love the game!
BUT..
2 thing are ruining the experience for me.. Both relate to the AI.
1. Monsters DO NOT ATTACK THE AI.
I don't know maybe I have a different version of the game for some reason.. But I've never ever ever seen the AI attacked by monsters.. I have seen the AI build an outpost next to a facking dragon (right next to it I swear) and that dragon then proceed to treat the outpost like it's baby.. Eventually attacking me!
2. Gangbangs ville.
Holy shit I was playing a game me +3 AI 2 Kingdom 2 Empire.
Now I'm pretty sure Kingdom Like Kingdom more So being kingdom I friended the other kingdom AI.
Anyways I attacked 1 of the empire AI. (was not friendly or close with kingdom AI). Sure enough after like 5 turns his buddy Empire AI joins him. Fair is fair I was ready for that.. I didn't want to call my kingdom friend in so I could gain more territory..
Another 10 turns later (about ) Boom my buddy attacks me.. YAY......
When the AI plays like that the game is no fun at all.. Loses all the strategic depth.. The only way to avoid the gangbang (so I thought) was to bribe the other Kingdom AI to join me. But STILL after a few turns he turn on me.. COME ON!

I think the immersion comes if the AI plays the game like human who hates using cheese and doesn't regard the human player any different than an AI player.
You could have an option to set the AI to regard the human automatically as their worst enemy for the hardcore players, but by default is should be as above.
Sean,I'm not good with code but is it possible to just copy the changes you made and modify my game file to implement this single change into my games? I like the game as is but its the diplomacy that is really poor. Have you thought about releasing this change as a small stand alone mod? It seems such a little change would have a great impact on gameplay for the better.
Last two games as challanging world, challanging AI.
1st game as Magnar, with 2 other Empire (resolyn and Yithril), 3 Kingdom (Altar, Tarth, Gilden).
I invade and practically destroy Resolyn (had no choice due to starting position). Tarth declares war on me and fair enough too. I meet Yithril, they declare on me shortly after due to being 'persuaded' by friend. Then ALL Kingdoms declare on both myself, and Yithril resulting in a 3 way gangbang.
Despite Yithril losing badly to the Kingdoms, they would not make peace with me at least not for a reasonable cost (2000+). Finally , after losing 4 cities to the Kingdom, they agree to peace costing me 500 gp, and then declare on me the very next turn. Sorry, thats not fun, if you make peace with someone, you shouldnt be able to declare on them the very next turn!
Second game, difficulty the same, im playing as Amarians, Karavox and Gilden declare on me almost as soon as I meet them, despite my power rating being comparable. Not sure what either of them were trying to achieve as they certainly didnt attempt to invade me at all, didnt even send an army over.
Diplomacy appears to be broken. Further, AI seems to have no concept of how to fight a war or have any goals in mind when declaring war on someone. Seriously, why should you declare war on someone who you dont even share borders with, or have an army poised to invade? A declaration of war should be followed very swiftly with an army trying to take a city.
This particular file can be added with no problems. That is generally not the case. Make a copy of your vanilla CoreAIDefs and save it somewhere safe. Then take the file I made and replace the one in the game folder.
I would take every little gem and turn it into a separate mod, but then I would have to manage like 30 mod projects and combinations thereof. If anyone is mod savvy and wants to cut out parts of my mod, they can release it with my blessing. If you think you like the ideas in that file, I assure you Master's Affliction will be a more enjoyable choice over the vanilla. It is actually quite easy on the lower difficulty levels... I assume.
