And on the 23rd of October, the classic strategy game design concepts returned
When I think of classic strategy games, I think Civilization, Star Control, Ultima, Wing Commander, Master of Orion, Baldur’s Gate and of course Master of Magic.
Because of the…unusual nature of Stardock, we have the luxury of trying to make a game that, we hope, is a love letter to that classic age. The user manual, the lore book and that the game itself will keep showing new things each time you play for months in advance are all things we wanted to emphasize as being part of the overall experience. Our industry just doesn’t make games like this anymore. The “ROI” just doesn’t work out. But we can. Because for us, Fallen Enchantress isn’t a “product”. We care about it. It matters to us. We want to make a game that not only we want to play but others will play for years to come. We want a game that even if there were no expansion packs or sequels (and there will be), would, on its own, provide months of enjoyment. We wanted a game that you would never have to update if you didn’t want to. We wanted to make a game that you’d never need to buy an expansion pack if you didn’t want to.
So what’s next?
Of course, we haven’t forgotten we live in the age of digital distribution. We embrace that and plan to take full advantage of it. The 2-week code lock down we have has been lifted by old man Paxton and we can begin to check in “Stuff”. You have to understand, I stalk you people. You think that French language forum stops me from reading what strategies get used? You think because the forum is in Russian and someone is mentioning a cool way to outflank the AI that I can’t use Google translate? So there’s always new things we can put in and thanks to digital distribution, we can, painlessly. So expect to see new AI strategies, UI tweaks based on customer requests, and of course bug fixes.
It’s a great time to be a PC gamer. Our employers – you guys – can tell us what you’d like to see. We can see what we can do and add it in and push it out. For us old gamers, this is truly a golden age we’re in.
I would expect to see a v1.01 download patch in the next week or so. I can’t list everything that’ll be in it. I have a lot of new AI ideas I want in. I’d like to make the battles a bit more multithreaded. I am sure there’s plenty of bugs out there that the guys will be fixing. The date will be heavily dependent on when the server loads come back down to earth.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
As I type this, there’s a lot of outstanding games that have recently come out. Let me use this space to advertise some of them. There’s XCOM, Dishonored, Borderlands, Torchlight, and a bunch of big games coming out in a few weeks. I’ve used my +1 boots of groveling with the media to try to get reviews. And they’re trying. But there are only so many gaming journalists and so many games. As a practical matter only the player base can save the day. We have lots of advertising lined up. But we’ll need people to give honest reviews of the game on various sites as well as just tell your friends and neighbors about the game.
The good news is that despite all the competition, we’re in the Steam and GameStop top 10 best sellers. And we haven’t even started getting the big reviews yet. That’s a good sign. 4X strategy gaming appears alive and well. And since we’re giving away just under 100,000 copies of the game, it’s going to be a real challenge to be a “top seller” (that’s $4 million in free games). Since most games only sell a third that number in their life time, it’s going to be a difficult hurdle to jump for this game to be listed as a best seller.
The fun is just beginning
I like to say that games are never truly “finished”. They simply ship. I don’t like to think that Fallen Enchantress is "finished”. There’s so much potential here. And together, hopefully we’ll be able to build on the cool game we’ve got today into something that really does (to quote one of my favorite games) “Stand the test of time”.
I will second the crappy user manual thing that games these days seem to have. I love a thick and artsy instruction manual complete with story and lore. A lot of times, PC games will just have an instrcution card and tell you to look up the rest online! You shouldn't have to buy the more expensive collectors edition to actually have an instruction manual to enjoy reading.
Kudos on your manual for FE Stardock! Very impressed!
1.get the game on steam workshop, that will help a lot
2. Allow current users to register their key on steam ! Its still refusing me to add it
3. Best wishes for addons and the rest ! I'll make sure French forums hear about the awesomeness of FE !
4. Buy FE if you didn't yet !
5. What the hell are you waiting for pressing the buy button ?
6. Why are you still reading this instead clicking on buy ???
7. Thank you Stardock for FE
It should be more about magic, more spells. I'm tired of using flame dart or fireball all the time. You said that you want to do sequel of Master of magic!! 3 new spells per level and some more useless in technology tree. I played beta, hoping, waiting and honestly it is far from Master of magic.
All races are similar, all human (one with horns ), few different traits, no elf, gnomes, dwarfs...
Put more spells, especially combat ones, more unique units, artifacts are lame... In combat it doesen't matter if unit can fly, you can still attack it with walking unit.
Don't get me wrong, its not all bad, but its far from Master of magic.
I hope you will consider some things and make it better.
Sorry for asking a new bee question, but do we download the game the same way that we downloaded the beta updates or is there a different procedure to download the full game?
You want a game that's exactly the same as Master of Magic? Well have I got a game for you! Master of Magic
It's the same procedure.
That's awesome... wish I had thought of that.
You should check out the Stormworld mod > https://forums.elementalgame.com/421802
@Devs: It might not be a bad idea to assist Heavenfall with marketing by incorporating Stormworld into your own, as this appears to be a common complaint.
Game is fantastic so far, I will keep spreading the word around the internet (I have been posting a few things on gamespot but as you said, A TON OF NEW GAMES either out or coming out right now)>
Good luck with the game! I got it free becuase I preordered the last game, but I will definatly be buying a copy of this for steam in the future!
Keep it up! HUGE improvement and for me atleast on the level of one of my fav games ever, Galactic Civ2 (:
I know of one sale I got from a thread on BoardGameGeek about people who play board games also playing video games... heh. Wish I got comissions, but can't have everything!
Yeah, you're right of course!
Shame on you!!!
More on topic: Purchased the game two hours ago - download is on 97%.
Is there a limit to be aware of when modding concerning the max number of races that can exist (be selected or randomly entered) in the race selection screens in a mod? Also, is there a limit to be aware of for the max number of races on the board in a single game?
This is probably being asked in the wrong thread ... could someone point me to where I should ask this?
Don't have to be harsh about it. I'm certain there is a modder out there putting together the MoM mod for FE as we type.
I've shown all of my friends (6) who like the turn based rts or HoMM type games this game. They all say this game looks good, but none of them will ever buy it without multiplayer.
I'd much rather see fewer content (items, quests, spells, buildings, etc) for the addition of Multiplayer simply because we have some amazingly creative modders here that can generate this content. The ability to play with friends is just unreplaceable.
2am I need to stop playing ... I have work at 6 ...
There was a poll/open post on the subject of multiplayer during the beta:
To be honest though I would re-run the poll because there are people now who play the game but weren't in the beta.
My sovereign just fell because of a mis-clicked spell because it was 2 a.m. :/
That could be just a story, but I was writing a tutorial while playing, and could not help but make mention the 2 a.m. factor in the nearly disastrous result! lol.
Asking a bunch of strategy gamers if they are interested in multi-player will yield very little data of value. There is a huge demographic that only plays multi-player games; these are the people to survey as to their interest in a turn-based role-playing strategy game, and they don't frequent this site.
However if memory serves an inquisition was made to the beta team not too long ago regarding the features most desired for an expansion, and multi-player seemed to receive the most support.
I have a hard enough time with computers. Actual humans who can defeat the computers? No thanks!
Playing with actual friends, however, would be fun.
I understand its hard to beat the AI, but with some time you get to learn the tricks of the trade, the AI always tries "the same tactic" (Not entirely true, but there are always some key flaws in the AI).
That said, I usually like the multiplayer part for the Coop, even if I have to combat ai or enemy players it doesn't matter, I find games way more interesting when Coop is allowed. The game already features simultaneous turns (helps wonders in coop turn based games) so I hope they throw wrenches at the multiplayer part until it works
Sincerely~ Kongdej
Me too. Despite what I said, playing a game with your friends is absolutely some of the most fun you can have... building a world together...

Having devoured every other Stardock game I tried WOM and found it... boring. The 1st adventure started grand but it didnt feel epic or challenging.
So I am glad to say that I have jumped on your fallen enchantress bandwagon.
Wallet of endless money +1 to the amusing Frogboy, whose forum posts alone were worth the £24.99
Sometime in early October, I remember seeing something in my inbox announcing the October 23rd release date.
I remember thinking to myself, "Cool! Can't wait!", and then something shiny caught my eye and I completely spaced it off.
Fortunately, I got the email announcement from Brad Wardell while I was at work this morning. I *had* been planning to stay late this evening and get a little extra work done, but I have now decided to blow all of that off to leave work at my normal time so that I can dive into FE for the entire weekend.
Brad- you mentioned some of the great new games to come out lately. I'm dying to know your opinion of the indie space 4X game "Endless Space". It owes a lot to Galciv2.
How could the digital downloaders get the fantastic manual and lore book??
