Has anybody tried this game yet?
I'm thinking of getting it for Xbox but I wonder if it's worth it.
I'M a real fan of doom and I've been playing doom since it first started out as a 1.44 meg disk on my 486 dx2 66 pc.
It's just Doom 3 with the expansion plus a few new levels (and Doom 1 & 2).
If you haven't played Doom 3 before (when did it come out, 7/8 years ago?), you should grab it. The graphics are still top notch after nearly a decade too. I can't remember any other FPS that looked that great on a 2004 budget video card. I prefer it on the PC, but I imagine it'll play just fine on an XBox.
I know a lot of people were annoyed by the constant in-game PDA messages but I found them to help immerse me in the game. The atmosphere is great and the weapons are fun. The boss fights are a tad too easy for experienced FPS players, but nevertheless still fun. If you want to sprint through every level and run and gun you'll miss out on a lot. Take your time, plug in your headphones, lower the blinds and turn the lights off for the optimum Doom 3 experience.
Doom 3 OMG. When the portal opened I was in one of the game bathrooms and made the mistake of looking into the mirror. Scared the crap out of me! The game designer that put that in should get an award for Best Detail Ever.
I've played Doom 1 and 2 but never tried Doom 3.
OK I'll be getting it and I'll let everybody know how it works out.
Thanks
Doom 3 is probably one of the best games of all time. I remember when I first played it I accidentally bashed a civilians brain in with my flashlight and that was hilarious.
I never really played Doom 3. I have it on PC but never got into it.
I think I will enjoy it a lot more on my console with my 42 inch screen.
Doom 3, in my opinion, is actually a rather mediocre game - it was in 2004 and remains even more so today. The game sported attractive visuals for the time, but suffered by uninspired level design (excessive darkness, same corridors over and over again), obnoxious game mechanics (necessity to swap between flashlight and weapon - so you were either defenseless or blind), and lame story.
The BFG edition allegedly tries to fix these problems, but when the lighting conditions are adjusted, the game's extremely low resolution textures become apparent, and compared to games like Dishonored or even Borderlands (for mindless shooting), Doom has little to offer.
The reason behind this rehash is obviously an attempt to milk the game for more revenues by releasing the game on consoles.
Scared the crap out of you? Good thing you were already in the bathroom.
I can understand you points. However for me quality graphics is not a must and Doom will always be doom. I'm getting this game because There are so many doom options in it. Doom 1 and 2 and all the other levels as well.
I am older and maybe that is why graphic wise it's not a big issue for me. The fact that the game made it difficult either blind or defenseless makes me think of strategy and difficulty. IN any case I do appreciate your feedback and When I get home tonight I'll try it out and see if it was worth it.
Older? Older than me? I will be 40 in April.
Okay, I must offer a second opinion. I was bored to hell by Doom 3 when it was released back in 2005 or so. But I gave this new edition a try, and I was pleasantly surprised by its cheap thrills - yes, it's stupid, yes, it's shallow, but so is a visit of a Haunted House in an Amusement Park, and still it can be fun - from time to time.
Doom 3 is certainly too long for its own good - it really gives the game a chance to become annoyingly repetitive. But the jokes, the e-mail references to pop culture, the corporate videos about work safety - all that polish serve as redeeming qualities, to an extent.
I consider Doom 3 to be one of the best games of all time.
I've been looking at the BFG Edition - mostly for it's native 3D Support - but I heard they re-worked the game to be faster? I actually really like it the way it is. Any confirmation on this?
Okay, strangely enough, I actually finished the game after all those years. As a plus, I must point out level design - especially the Hell period isn't bad. On the minus side - the game is really toooooo long, and repetitive in the end. Combat is extremely stale with all those scripted triggers. The story is really just average, but the minor jokes and references in the emails are nice and fresh from time to time.
Strange thing is that the BFG edition is actually dumbed down - dynamic lights from the shots are removed to help the consoles handle the load.
I got a cool expansion pack for Doom 3 PC that was awesome. It includes extra weapons such as a double barrel shotgun and new levels. It is one of the best games.
