Hey there...
I think the game is shaping up magnificently. Not only has it improved tenfold in terms of mechanics/gameplay - but it also has a rare charm, which is quite elusive and hard to attain for any developer. There's something about the visual style and music which gives it a delightful old-school feel.
That said, I haven't been really able to enjoy singleplayer strategy games for a number of years. It's hard to describe, but I grew up with games like Warlords (Amiga version) and several boardgames - and I always played them with my friends. I also used to play a lot of PnP RPGs - and multiplayer is just that much more meaningful to me.
These days, I can't enjoy a grand strategy game except as "practice" for multiplayer. It feels hollow to compete against an AI, even a good one. Not because it can't be a challenge - but because it's inevitably predictable - and no matter what, you will ALWAYS be able to defeat it after learning the requisite patterns. I fully understand that a lot of people love this process of discovering the AI - and the quirks that go with it - but to me, it's just not the same as playing with/against human opponents. The psychological factors are really entertaining and powerful.
So, while I've already bought WoM (upon release, so I already "own" Fallen Enchantress) - I won't be able to enjoy it unless multiplayer is in the cards.
My question is this:
Do we have any idea of what the chances of it being implemented are? I know they did a poll a while back - and I was hoping the result was motivating in terms of implementing MP.
But, I haven't been following it closely - and I just want to know if anything has been said about it since then?
They haven't really said anything. Because it depends on how well FE sells, probably. There was a post hinting that they would face a choice between multiplayer and expanding mod support, so it is definitely something they are thinking about.
Ok, thanks for answering. I wouldn't mind buying it "again" to show my support, but I have a feeling that it won't be selling like hotcakes. The first game kinda ruined the chances of that - but I'm crossing my fingers
Adding multiplayer post-release is going to be a nightmare probably. In the past Stardock has shown minimal if any support for multiplayer. Good lord did anyone try it in the original Elemental 0_o? Its a real shame since I've put countless hours into Civ4 with friends and I wish I could do the same with Fallen Enchantress. It will still be a good single player game at least. Originally they claimed FE would have multiplayer, then they claimed they would add it post release, then it became a 'maybe' in a future expansion, now its only silence. If the game isn't originally setup for multiplayer components then you can expect it to desync often, heck my game loads different than it was saved in single player all the time! Also I can't even imagine how buggy the tactical battles would be with more than one player considering the current state of affairs.
They cut it because they wanted to focus on single player instead. Nothing wrong with that. If they are going to do multiplayer after release, it is clear that it is going to take a significant effort. Therefore, they will most likely only do it if the game sells well.
Something to remember is that E:wom was the first game, FE the second. If FE does well, they intend to do a 3rd game. Therefore, multiplayer after release is much more likely because it's not just an investment into FE, it would be an investment for the 3rd game as well.
Damn, it needs multiplayer to sell to my friends...... Guess I'll have to buy them a copy each, so they can start training for the MP matches later to come. Perhaps those extra sales can give us excactly that; Multiplayer!
Edit: One thing is clear, even though I play the heck out of this game already, its longlevity will improve alot with MP. Nowadays I only play 3 games, and FE is the only one I still enjoy to play SP. Europa Universalis 3 and Civ 5 are the two others, but I only play them MP nowadays. That doesent mean I don't play those games atleast on a weekly basis, because I do.
Galactic Civs II would be up there among those still most played too, if it only had MP. It's one of the best games ever made, but not playing it much anymore despite its respectable AI. If it had MP it would still be my most played game.
Funny, my friends said the same, but guess we are minority here
Sincerely~ Kongdej
I look forward to a 6 player game, FFA, large map, with me and 2 friends as the Kingdoms, you and 2 friends as the Empires. Some sunny day, my friend, some sunny day our dreams come true.....
haha No promises though
A noisy minority I hope! I have the same problem (I already gifted a copy of Elemental to my best friend, but I can't buy it to ALL my LAN's companions)
NEVER!
In all seriousness, with their previous usage statistics of only 2% going to multiplayer, I can see Stardock being very hardpressed to invest anything more than 2% towards the endeavour.
Now, I'm not saying that it will never happen....just that it is very unlikely.
True enough. The aspect that I find most interestesting however is that the gaming engine being used is SOOOOO flexible, I'd bet that it IS the third game and it's going to be titled "GalCivIII".
AI is limited. So single-player players give limited feedback. Multiplayer is much better in finding strategies, exploits, etc. So multiplayer players give good feedback: strategies, exploits, balance, etc. Multiplayer is needed to improve balance and AI in game.
Although I like multiplayer, I think this is very hard to implement. Too much randomness in quests, resources (crystal, shards, metal, horses,...) and the rest of lore...some disbalancing between the races...
But anyway, the option of having it is tempting...
I would like to have multiplayer very much, I've bought two copies of Elemental with 1 more being bought for christmas (all for myself & family), I've got 3 friends and my brother I'd like to buy a copy for but will not until we get multiplayer as this is the only reason they would start playin this or any 4x - a total of 7 copies to be bought by one multiplayin fella, surely this has to add a percentage to the multiplayer polls
this same group (plus/minus a couple) has played Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Age of Wanders Shadow, Wesnoth, Nabungas Ambition, Genghis Kahn, & several others together - they are a big reason I spend 100's if not literal 1000's of hours making/balancing/testing maps
I view multiplayer players as 'sellsmen'
The randomness is no problem, we don't want multiplayer to be any different from the MP version.
Wait what?
I do hear you though, the randomness I can deal with when playing multiplayer, if nothing else I just die and take a break
the main reason that sold me on the first edition of this game was the fact that it had multiplayer. after i got the game i played it twice and never played it again because of mp being broken.... they tell me they will fix this in the second edition of the game "fallen enchantress" now i learn they took mp out??? wtf i hate these guys , the game wouldve been bad ass if i could battle friends duhhh anyone who doesnt want to battle friends is stupid as hell
There goes the last bridge....
From what I remember of Frogboy telling us about multiplayer is that it will be added as an expansion after the release of this game. Problem is that they needed to reprogram all the tatical battle stuff to include multiplayer and they didn't have the time (or probably money) to do that at the moment. Stardock from my impression doesn't have any problem with adding multiplayer and they plan to add it. Just not now, in the future... I hoping by next summer But that may be too much hope...
How open-minded.
Sincerely~ K
I agree, a well implemented, balanced, bug-free and lag-free multiplayer would be an awesome addition to this game. I would also like a pony, but I think there's a waiting list for that as well.
Nope the wait is done... check the changelog for .984
Lol! Well I guess there's hope for Multiplayer yet!
Wait a minute a pony? That's not nearly enough!
Man, not the best way to get the devs to listen... just sayin'.
I do want MP but all the people that are vocal about wanting it tend to be very rude. There is nothing wrong with being a gentleman on the internet. Let's hope there is some civility in MP.
Civility in multiplayer. Your imagination astounds me.
