Hey guys, I've started work on Vasari model in Zbrush that should rock. I've been wanting to do this for a while but haven't had the time, and I noticed a definite lack of 3D Sins character models. So, here's to hoping I'll start something.
My first model will be a Vasari shock trooper/marine type character.
I'll have to take a bit of creative license, as I could only find 3 images of the Vasari. If you know of any, please let me know. (Stardock/Ironclad, if you're reading this and you have some reference images for the Vasari, gimme pretty please)
This is what I have to work with:
1) The Vasari in-game HUD portrait
2) The Vasari loading screen illustration (Vasari elder pointing toward view screen)
3) Vasari portrait; profile, with odd helmet
Modders, please feel free to use the photo-realistic graphics I produce with these models in your loading screens, etc.
I'll most likely be releasing the models themselves, although idk how useful they'll be to you.
Any requests for Sins related models, leave them in this thread.
Here's the complete base mesh for my Vasari shock trooper. Nothing special yet, other than that its ready to sculpt. This didn't take me as long as I thought, and actually, at the time of this writing I have the level 1 details in. There's hope for a decent colored version soon.

I'm not sure about the leg spikes...
Also, if you have any suggestions for weapons/props/etc let me know.
This is pretty cool....
Level 2 details...still not in love with the leg spikes. About 2 hours total, now. Once I get in all the details fleshed out, I'll upload a turntable.

I'm trying to make sure it doesn't become too insectoid. Unfortunately, the Vasari body plan is based on a common-sci fi trope, so much so that when I add armor and battle equipment, it begins to look insectoid. Let me know in my next update if I did okay.
Thanks! It's a lot of fun.
In case anyone is wondering, I'm using Zbrush.
Note: These models will be HIGH polygon. They won't be suitable for use in games. The main purpose is to integrate them into 2.5D illustrations. If you have ZBrush, you will be able to pose them with Transpose, and you can also use any InsertBrush to add items to the mesh.
Looks great. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
Okay, I think the final level of detail is done. Let me know what you guys think.

Here's a closeup of the head:

And here's a turntable. The quality is a bit low, but I'll optimize it once I've colored the model.
Finally someone makes a Vasari model...kudos.
I've added some quick polypaint.
This is a Vasari land trooper, I guess. Nothing flashy, just hard armor to repel TEC bullets.
The model isn't completely painted yet, but this can provide a rough idea.
If anyone has any idea what Vasari weapons are supposed to look like, ill add them on.

Edit: Just want to note that JPEG format loses some quality. Normally, I would export as PSD and then export from Photoshop to JPEG to ensure that it doesn't actually do any compression. I have Camtasia installed on the other computer..I'll try to load this over there and get a recording of the model as I see it.
Looking good so far. Will be interesting once finished. Though i know you are going for the organic look, Might i suggest a little tech mixed in with it. I know there aint much to go on. Just a thought.
Hey Major. I'm open to anything. The paint didn't take too long, so its not a big deal. The model is finished, so I can go back to it any time. For instance, for I more technological feel, I could turn the chest plate into hard, smooth armor very quickly with hard surface brushes.
Here's a smoother render that shows more detail:

Very Nice!!
Nice! I don't think we have any idea what Vasari hand weapons would look like, but one of the Vasari in a loading screen is holding a staff of some sort, perhaps you could give him a combat staff? I know it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense in a futuristic setting, but it'd be better than nothing.
Was not trying to say remove the looks so far. It is actually quite good as it is now. You can leave the chest plate as it is. I was thinking about adding little techy things like how the Predator has his little wrist "all in one including nuclear weapon" gizmo.
Don't really know much about Vasari physiology, but body armor does look real good. I think it should be more refined as to not look like it is "fused" onto, or the armor is grown from the troopers body. Or perhaps it is "grown" through nano tech. Anything is possible.
He could have the Staff weapon, or a Wrist cannon, or a shoulder mounted weapon. Again anything is possible.
It is looking very good so far. Keep it up
Also, since it says Sins factions, I assume you will be doing TEC and Advent as well, I would like to point out that in the Rebellion intro there is a guy on a tower on the right as they show the Colony Frigate landing to pick up troops, and he is clearly holding a rifle or other mid sized weapon of some sort, I only say this cause he's only visible for a few seconds and you might not have noticed him, given that he is off to the side.
Hey all, glad you like it.
Thanks for the weapons suggestions. What I really like about this, is now that the model is done, there's no limit on armor-type. I could even create a fully painted diplomat with this model.
Sadly, The latest Zbrush update seems to have a masking bug. This is preventing me from adding accessories or changing the model's pose until it's resolved. I can create the weapon models, but I have no way to attach them. Should be resolved soon though .
And yes, I plan to do models from all the factions as time allows . I'll probably do Advent last, since they're basically humans with white eyes.
EDIT:
Nevermind about the bug. I found a very unlikely work-around. That's the thing about Zbrush, it enables you to create models as if you were working with clay (and saves you from nerb hell), but the program's UI, and heck, its programming, looks like it was thrown together with dynamite, duct tape a chainsaw and a lot of hope.
So, for now at least, masking is working as usual.
Nice work again.
The Vasari concept art is so varied that it's really hard to pin down what "a" Vasari would actually look like. I personally chalk it up to genetic modifications and cybernetic attachments.
I made a vasari bust going for the "sinister, naked Vasari" look but it is entirely subjective. Here's my shamless self-plug for comparison (refresh the page if you miss the animation)..
I like the strong brow line and the skeletal look. The one feature that seems definite is the odd oral/nasal cavities in the lower face. I've tried to incorporate that as well.
For my diplomatic Vasari model, I think I'll incorporate some of your facial features. I think, regardless of situation, Vasari should always appear threatening to humans, as they are simply so, so different.
Did you make this in Sculptris? Great program.
Does anyone know if Vasari are supposed to have hair or not?
I don't think so.
Not enough to be visible at least.
On all of the artwork we have seen so far there is no evidence of any kind of hair on a Vasari. Vasari look to be a mix of insectoid, and reptillian.
Thanks guys.

I'm working on the assumption that Vasari armor is nanite based, so we don't have any buckles or fasteners here. My interpretation is that the nanites swarm the soldier and then coalesce where needed.
I've also added an energy field effect to parts of the armor.
I'm installing Camtasia to this computer so that you guys can see the fine details. I've also started on a wrist cannon.
Looks awesome. Karma for you!
EDIT: apparently the karma system isn't working
No sweat.
Here's a Camtasia capture. I'll try to zoom it some more next time. You can see more details if you full screen it. Sorry about the pause in the middle, I hit the wrong command.
BTW, he's hollow and should be 3D printer ready.
I've also started work on an Admiral Kol model.
I can create the Vasari diplomat rather quickly from my standard Vasari model by adjusting limb size, etc, so I'll do the Kol first.
Outstanding work! Keep it up!
Just gave you Karma because this is awesome. Keep going.
