So we have a problem on ICO...trolls....
I'm not talking about the people who are mean or just general asshats....or even the certain someone who likes the ancient chinese dialect of ALL CAPS...I'm talking about those people who don't quit when they should, or pause indefinitely in smaller games...you know, the people who really ruin the game for everyone...
The games where this occur are absolutely ridiculous...if not all the humans on a team quit, you basically have to kill every planet owned by everyone on that team....on large and huge maps, that can take a very very long time...
Some hosts who are aware of these people and their trolling will often boot them from games and refuse to allow them in....but not all hosts are wary of these trolls or don't want to come off rude...
I am proposing the idea of a blacklist...I'm not looking to ban these people (we've had enough of that around here), but I do think the community as a whole should be aware of these people....those who troll and ruin games for everyone will develop reputations that will have unofficial but grave consequences.....you troll continually, you get blacklisted...you get blacklisted, then everyone knows your reputation and hosts can choose whether to keep you in or boot you...
This is not a joke "Official Troll List"....this is a serious effort that unfortunatley has been thwarted at every turn....
While I realize it would change the game everyone is used to quite a bit... you know those other victory conditions would help with problem if they were actually used.

What I have for now I can organize it more later. I wish I had gotten steam names remember to do that if you add to the list.
I'm just not a fan of those for large team games....my biggest problem is that capital victory and flagship victory remove the player from the game regardless of what assets they had at the time....there is just too much strategy and skillful play in regards to dealing with situations where you lose your first cap (quote on quote "flagship") or your HW...players who lose those assets still can contribute greatly to the game and how they deal with those situations can shape the outcome significantly....simply put, capital and flagship victories remove a dynamic element from large team games....
I played a game tonight where three people (including myself) lost their HWs fairly quickly...the choice to sacrifice the HW (in my case) or how we each dealt with having to relocate clearly defined the game and was a huge part in determining its outcome...
I don't think I need to explain why research, diplomatic, or occupation victory aren't very good for large team games....they are all awesome victory condiditons for SP or small casual games (capital and occupation are my favorite), but not for competitive ICO games...
I'd like to reiterate that I'm mostly concerned with people who abuse pausing or drag games out for hours....I am not concerned with people who are just asshats or big meanies....
These people who refuse to quit games that they have clearly lost are a great detriment to the MP community...I am not asking for dev action or looking to get these people banned....what I'm looking for is the MP community to clean its own house and take care of its own problems...
I believe this is a problem...others may not, in which case this doesn't concern you....right now, I think the best solution is just a blacklist....I just want the information to be out there, and hosts of games can make their own choices whether to keep those people in or boot them...
Again, this is not about bashing on people you just don't like or people who you think are just douchey fellas...this is about people that refuse to quite or abuse pausing, something that isn't solved by having a thicker skin or simply getting better at the game...
( A ). This thread is going to be banned, because it just mentioned a blacklist.
( B ). Warnever changes, has just mentioned names on this thread.
( C ). The reason I quit playing this game after owning it for 3 weeks was becuase of this reason. There would be some people who will go AFK, or tell you they are going to go AFK and watch a movie and minimise the game. I also can recall the time where people would put there laptop into powersaver mode and drag the game out. So many ways to disrupt a good game.
Let's face it. This game is a single player game, and not multi-player.
Extremely disspointed with the multiplayer aspect of the game.
I did my first pvp yesterday, and I found it a lot of fun, so that it's for SP only is complete bullshit...
Anyway, "people who don't quit when they should" are the people that play it correctly, you should never give up(I've played Supreme Commander Forged Alliance a lot online in past years, and have won several times by just escaping with my commander and rebuilding and doing a surprise attack because he thinks I'm gone.
And yesterday I had quite little chance to survive, but I somehow did, I wanted to quit right at the start because of my crappy beginning position, but I went on anyway and ended up killing another player while surviving without getting attacked once(they really should have focused on me, I was right next to 4 of them)
Concentrate on 2v2 or 1 on 1 games because Its alot more fun and alot much faster than your so called galactic empires with massive feed and eco players going wail and mobile starbases.
Big games do need team work, an experienced awareness of whats going on because otherwise you just hear trolls bitching and ranting while they blame other people for their problems.
Not quitting is fine when your team has a chance to win. It's really frustrating when a player loses their first capital ship and gives up. Even losing your capital isn't a reason to quit if your team is strong.
Staying in a game to draw it out for an extra 2-3 hours, which is easy to do in sins, is a bullshit move. Most people like to play 2 or 3 games of sins when they finally make time. You'll be accepted into the online community if you graciously surrender and move onto the next game.
If a person has lost the battle for there homeworld, and have enough fleet and a colony ship to rebuild somewhere else then that is great, we want that sort of player. However, it all depends on circumstances. If your team is being horribly crushed to death, or they have already left the game and been replaced by an AI. How can one man, + 4AI vs 5 Humans actually win?
I think this is what many new players don't realise, its all based on circumstances. They would want us to chasee them half way around the galaxy becuase they feel they are in charge of Battlestar: Galaticprick.
There's frankly people who quit too early, or don't quit at all. Except when your on the last planet, after destroying every single one because they failed to quit and quit just in time before they get a loss on thier record.
Please don't consider quiting because of your starting postion. We don't like re-hosting a game because someone is unhappy about where they start. But well done on coming back.Thats what I like to hear.
I think the online community is too small to really "do" much about the trolls. Last night was a good example as you know Sel - there we were, playing with some infamous ones because it was taking too long to fill a game without them. Plus the fact that names can be changed makes it a little harder to identify sometimes. There are really two options - allow them, tolerate them, deal with it. Or be serious about encouraging all hosts to boot them and just be more patient in waiting for someone else to fill a 10 man game. Or, as RK said, play more small size games. I think it's hilarious though when half the lobby has them on ignore - maybe just more judicious use of ignore function is the best way.
This is exactly why I am not interested in people who just troll the lobby or annoy other players...we don't have the luxury to get rid of them and honestly dealing with that shit is just part of life and being on the internet...
I want to reiterate that I am only concerned with the few individuals who drag out games for hours...we have a small community and we can't afford to have 5 skilled players tied up in a troll game where 1 person is dragging it out....
I would say right now it is in everyone's best interest to refrain from using names at this point in time....there is a reason I have not mentioned any names because I do not want this thread to get locked...
Well, if it's just about people who refuse to quit and drag the game out, I can only think of 2 or 3 regulars who do that when they are feeling testy. Newish players sometimes do it because they don't realize that they have lost and aren't able to judge properly that they have absolutely no chance. I'm less likely to be annoyed with them as it's not intentionally being trolly. So...I guess it's just up to the regular hosts to exert some pressure and see if that makes a difference. Can't think of any other answer really. It is getting to the point where the number of people refusing to play with certain unnamed people is increasing lately...
Each place, each space time and in each single game a troll exists. This cannot be overcome by blacklisting but only by muting someone from sending messages and using speach/talk options. This way they can only direct there fued by gameplay. Theres nothing more enjoyable that fighting a troll who has no choice but to play.
What is tis, i am not on the shitlist?
And this, abaut 9001x times this arse: Sir-Rogers. The gaffot stretched a lost game on purpose for around 30 minutes, after all his allies left and he was cornered in his HW with a turnip.
If you see Sir-Rogers, do not take him, he is a dead weight and a game stretcher.
How to end a game when somebody refuses to leave although he has lost:
The game ends, when all HUMAN controlled players of the hostile team have left the game or are defeated.
That means, you dont have to bother with the AI replacements.
Most of you know that of course, but just in case a newer player happens to see this topic.
You should also know, that you can order your AI allies to defend or to attack.
If your team has several human players left.... concentrate on this single asshole. He wants to be bombed back to the stone age? Do him the favour. 5 v1 is quite unfunny if you are the 1.
If one of your teammates has to leave before you can wipe him, at least ask him to make a final assault with his fleet. The AI can easily rebuild it, however it is not half a smart at what to attack.
If you can keep your comp running... return the favour.... minimize the game do something different. BTW, does Sins support running 2 instances of the game? Time is usually your ally, especially if you order your AI team mates to attack the troll.
And when the game is over.... go to his player name and try to find out his steam name. People are usually a lot more hesistant to change that name than their ICQ name.
And of course ban them from any of your games. Permanently.
This is not true....I've been in multiple games where wiping all the human assets did not end the game...we could see all gravity wells (via clairvoyance just to make sure) and there was no asset owned by the human player...we had to wipe all enemy planets, including the AIs....
I had the same situation several times before. It always worked for me. Perhaps there was an unusual victory condition? Also make sure that the player is actually defeated.... go to diplomacy window, the glass should be broken.
Then check network monitor.
I've never seen a human player ever defeated on ICO unless there was a victory condition like capital or flagship....diplomacy window always shows all the players alive all the way through until the victory screen (at which point I've never bothered to go back and look at the diplomacy window)....
AHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
AHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAH
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH....
AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
And now to the point.
What do you think a player who is left alone against 5 other players, who own 75% of the map (enemy ai mop up in progress), can do?
Other than waste their time by going afk or something?
You think it will get locked if we mention names? then what is the point of the thread....... if they lock this I'm leaving the game not as if it matters... But that is ridiculous that they would lock this. After all we are trying to remove the bad elements of the online play not destroy it....
Using names this early on can lead to the named people getting offended and at that point, the mods would lock the thread. Waiting until everyone can agree on what constitutes a Troll means all the names could then be listed at once.
Personally, I don't think this needs to exist, but if you all want to blacklist people in your already small MP community, that's fine. A much better response to these people who make you wait it out would be to simply refuse to play with them again once you know they're the kind of player you don't like. That way you don't have to play with them, and they maybe take a hint and start surrendering when they're done in. Blacklisting will just kill it outright, until the only people who play are the people who posted the list in the first place, and the occasional new player, who seem to be just as undesireable in my experience.

Me gusta. Aussi, je ne joue pas MP
Translation: I like it. But I don't play MP.
After re-reading, that looked a little more trolly than I meant it. All I'm saying is blacklisting people outright will shrink the community.
That's the whole point of a blacklist, so that everyone knows who to avoid...there are a lot of new players who get trolled to death and then decide not to come onto ICO anymore...so, the list serves a purpose in potentially helping newer players who are just looking to have fun...
As for the regulars, a unified effort by hosts to simply boot certain trolls will have a much greater impact than if only 1 or 2 hosts continually choose to use the boot...
I understand that not everyone on ICO comes to the forums, but it's the best method of mass communication we have right now....
Tis true. It's pretty much the ultimate sanction short of getting your IP banned.
