Chris Roberts--the primary creator of Games such as Privater, Wing Commander and Freelancer is back in action!.
FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
Welcome!
If you’ve made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.
If not, you’re still welcome!
I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.
I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.
I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.
With the power of today’s computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.
With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.
If you’ve played my games, you’ll know that’s what I love to do.
I’m here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.
I hope you’ll be as excited by it as I am.
My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.
If you register below you’ll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game’s website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It’s my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.
The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.
My name is Chris Roberts.
And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.

The link is here (and "42" is what will get you in if you get stuck). Go enroll and let this guy know you are interested--this is the original scfi game maker who broke all the rules and did the things no one else would.
I would pay for this game in advance without even knowing what it was.
I believe the link gives you the chance to be an alpha-beta tester for the game during the next two years. I'd highly recommend it.
I also think it would be fantastic if Stardock and Ironclad sent him a note of support (I'm just sayin'...)
I finally took delivery of a battle hardened Gladiator today. She's sitting in my hanger getting a good once over by the AMX-1 Repair Bot getting her back to a duty ready state. After the bot has her back to 100% I'll give her a good wash and see if she needs new paint.
Can't wait to get you guys over to my hangar, getting in and out of this one is just cool as hell. The bottom of the cockpit opens up and the seats drop down. You and the gunner get in the chairs, back to back, and it lifts up. The bottom of the cockpit closes up, the pilot's foot pedals and stick slide into place, the gunner's seat - after a short pause - continues to lift some more and into the gunner bubble where it rotates 180 degrees into the forward position. The gunner has full vision 360 degrees on the horizontal plane and from level to straight up. Basically, unless something is under the ship, the gunner can see it, and probably shoot it.
Sounds pretty awesome!I can't wait to try out all the different ships hey.
I would love to see peoples hangars. My hangar is still mediocre, but with an Aurora LX (anniversary sale thank you), 325a (Won that ship in a tournament battle contest... pure luck), Omega Mustang (can't wait to FLY this one)
From the vids of the gladiator I soooo want to sit in it.
When they get around to finally adding hangar visit functionality, hopefully they allow us to have our full hangars again as well, I'll post a code here and some times I can be on and people can come over and crawl around in ships. Not a fan of the current pick your hangar and limited number of ships deal.
Yes, the videos of the Gladiator in my hangar on my stream did inspire you didn't it. Besides, didn't you already call dibs on being my gunner?
Since contact lists have been available for a little bit now as well as private matches where you can team up with/against each other, now's as good of time as any to start posting names and availability and maybe getting some matches going.
My contact name would be Joxer (The one with the picture of the 300i since I just looked my name up and saw a few that are close.)
I'm available pretty much this entire Saturday (Jan 24th, Pacific time zone if someone wants to narrow some hours down)
Just a side note, I haven't played at all since racing became a thing, been super busy with work and everything else, so really looking to do some Coop Vanduul Swarm until I have a chance to relearn all of the controls and get used to the new additions and physics updates. Also it seems that I have a bit more stutter while walking through my hangar, so I don't know how that'll affect gameplay. Hasn't before, but you never know.
Forgot to mention, limited ships are on sale right now until the end of the month to give people a chance to pick them up before the Europeans start getting charged VAT... Being from California, I've always been charged a tax for all of my purchases, so welcome to the Getting Taxed Club of California and Texas. Also the anniversary edition ships have made a reappearance, the only difference between them and the normal is the hull insurance is for 2 years rather than 6 months. More then likely these will reappear again down the road, just that if you live in Europe, they'll be a little bit more then they were before. (And by a little bit, depending on what country the buyer is in, the price could go up as much as 27% to cover the tax, or so I've read in the EU's 2015 edition of e-commerce tax law changes.)
Wow!!! That's some serious tax on a virtual space craft!!!
I swapped my Aurora out for a Mustang. Felt it would be a better choice for starting out in the PMC business.
Mustang Delta, or Alpha? Picked me up a Delta for the combat potential in a small ship as well.
Just an Alpha, since it was a 0 cost transaction. I just think it will do better as a starter for my life as a mercenary.
Something any fan should read, especially those with money issues at the present.

The basics is, when Arena Commander 1.1 is released, you can earn in game credits to 'rent' ships and equipment for use in Arena Commander. So if you only have an Aurora and want a Hornet with some Mantis chain guns, and you got a little bit of free time, playing ranked matches will earn you what you want. Then you get it for a week and can re-rent at a discount for additional weeks.
Well, at least one will be able to use anything one owns in the PU in Arena Commander and the FPS Module without any strings attached, which makes sense considering they are in-universe simulators and, therefore, allow for the ability to experiment in a safe environment.
I finally got the chance to see my hanger in all of its 2 FPS on lowest settings glory. Saw i was gifted a free ship, and some decorations. Crashed when i tried to take the free ship out for a spin. Ah well this replacement laptop doesnt cut the mustard ether. cant say i was surprised.
Exactly, and the other benefit is if you're not sure about something, such as how well you'd do as a racer, before you commit time and energy in the PU to buy up the stuff you need to do that sort of thing, you earn it in AC and try it out, and if you just suck at it, even with relatively good stuff, you can keep 'renting' and practicing until you get good, or just realize that it's not for you until you have disposable income to waste on it and you've saved yourself a lot of effort in the PU.
You'll get there someday, and as your friendly neighborhood Spiderman Space Marshal, I can't wait for hangar invites. I've got a lot of toys that need pilots and crews.
*Edit* It's also still highly unoptimized. Very little level of detail and whatnot when it comes to objects at a distance. Still mad that I have to pick the ships I want to have in rather then just editing the files to allow for all of them to be in. Miss the gun range and stunt track.
This game needs "TSCOP"
I am cool with being a crew member for now. Since my new laptop isn't really up to snuff. It is still a DX 11 radeon GPU with a 2.9 gig AMD A10 cpu. I think my ram is the real issue, or i should say lack of it. I got 8 gigs (which is SC's minimum requirement), but the GPU can use up to 4 gigs of it. I do have a free ram upgrade slot. Unfortunately it literally means dismantling the laptop just to get to it. (they couldn't just put a little access door by the ram.. Noooo, That would make it too easy). Anyways looking into getting another 8 gig strip to see if that helps.
Absolutely! I'll petition that through concierge for shits and giggles... And maybe prod them about why the Orion sale hasn't happened yet.
Crew, sure. Captain if I can trust you not to steal my ship, and cut me in for a little bit of the profit of whatever business venture is being conducted. Bison and I are teaming up to do stuff, never hurts to have another gun along.
Imagine... I nice juicy Starfarer lumbering along, loaded full of hydrogen (or ore) ready for processing, clogging up the EM spectrum with maximum range scans. A Hornet Ghost out running recon all nice and quiet like, monitoring a pair of pirates scurrying quickly to their favorite ambush point. They're completely unaware that the Ghost has been relaying their positions to the Starfarer and a Super Hornet/Constellation/Freelancer MIS (or more depending on how many people are up for a fun little PvP gang bang) making a wide swing to come in and pimp slap them back to the med bay their whore of a mother introduced them to the world in...
Sinperium, you've been awfully quiet for far too long. You still alive buddy?
I have been waiting for this for 20 years.
There is NOTHING that can describe my excitement
Well.. Being a Captain (or fleet commander) I have a very bad habit of getting people killed... Entire fleets (my own fleets) in my eve online days. Picture me as "Maniac" in wing commander prophecy. I can do crazy shit, and nothing will touch me (most of the time), but if i make others do the same crazy shit.. BLAM!... dead.
So i would just be in it for the fight, or the money. Which ever. Just don't hand me the keys to your ship
No one's talking fleet commander or anything like that, just captain of a ship. (Besides, with my fleet, I'm the commander. ) I always assume the pilot is the captain. Doesn't have to be that way, but I have a feeling that more times then not, the crew, if there is any, will be NPC just to get the ship efficiency up while not sacrificing the number of ships fielded for any particular operation or venture unless everyone agrees, there's only a need for one or two ships and everyone can and wants to be on them. Using the Orion to mine asteroids near Terra early game for example, get a crew of 4 (or 5 if I can get my hands on the refinery module), Terra's space is pretty safe, so no need for an escort, Terra is close by, so no need for transport ships, operating costs are greatly reduced so there's no need to screw around looking for the "big score". Will probably be like that early on when the need for money is high and maximum efficiency is required, but once people start to break out and go exploring, and get better at doing things, I really don't see everyone packing it in on one ship unless there is some combat operation where the ship is being used for boarding.
More then likely, as the PU matures, it'll have to be something like taking the Orion out to do some mining, having the Starfarer and Caterpillar along to transport goods (since the good spots won't be close to populated space), a Merchantman to sell the really valuable minerals to other players who'd be easier to beat in a price negotiation as they roam around in other systems, and having any number of the more combat oriented ships just out and about making sure no one comes too close to any part of the operation. But I'd have to have a group of 10 or more people who can all be on at the same time (some weekend perhaps) who just want to do some good old fashioned credit earning and a good mineral rich asteroid to pick apart and a buyer or several that really wants what we find and are willing to pay good credits for it.
For all I know, since we really haven't talked about it, Bison might just want to take the 890 Jump and go drive groups of people around earning credits luxuriously and site seeing at the same time. *shrug*
I'll probably have to start up an Org before any of that... Anyone got any good names or corporate logos they're willing to give up?
I hear ya. I'm all for casual crap like exploring, and mining etc. etc.. Like i said once i get the rig to where this thing ain't playing at 2 FPS, and crashing if i try to move my ship. I will be a lot more active. Right now i'm kinda stuck in my hanger.
With the RSI Orion mining platform,RSI is letting individuals take over a process formerly controlled by mega-corporations. The Orion’s features include high-grade turret-mounted tractor beam arrays, durable exterior-accessible ‘saddlebags’ for mineral storage and a cabin designed by the team that brought you the Aurora and Constellation!
Why doesnt this game excite me?
I should be all over this ..WC guy..love space games..
I like single player story's with RP ....
Well, Squadron 42 is the single player part of the game... and that should be good.
Can sum it up in one word.... BETA.
The game despite pretty good progress is still very much beta. Like what Wintercross said. Once Squadron 42 comes out then SC will pick up the pace. Right now there isn't very much you can do. Sit in your hanger, Go for a free flight in your shiny new ship, Or test your might in the arena. I can do 2 of the 3 right now with my crappy laptop. I dont dare try to pvp at 2 fps. The graphics are top of the line. As is the learning curve. This is a space sim after all. The likes of the old PC flight sims, and they put everything (including a kitchen sink) into it. BTW you will need a damn good next gen rig to run SC smoothly in its present state.
