Chris Roberts--the primary creator of Games such as Privater, Wing Commander and Freelancer is back in action!.
FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
Welcome!
If you’ve made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.
If not, you’re still welcome!
I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.
I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.
I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.
With the power of today’s computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.
With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.
If you’ve played my games, you’ll know that’s what I love to do.
I’m here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.
I hope you’ll be as excited by it as I am.
My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.
If you register below you’ll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game’s website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It’s my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.
The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.
My name is Chris Roberts.
And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.

The link is here (and "42" is what will get you in if you get stuck). Go enroll and let this guy know you are interested--this is the original scfi game maker who broke all the rules and did the things no one else would.
I would pay for this game in advance without even knowing what it was.
I believe the link gives you the chance to be an alpha-beta tester for the game during the next two years. I'd highly recommend it.
I also think it would be fantastic if Stardock and Ironclad sent him a note of support (I'm just sayin'...)
Just finished Frakensteining my desk chair to hold to control devices--one at the end of each armrest.
Prepare for Stantegeddon.
Awesome, I'm wanting to get a good control setup for my PC too... though I really need to at least upgrade my graphics card so I can even play =P
That's where I rain down hellfire upon you and purge your existence from the verse.
Bison, picked up an 890 Jump for you to drive. Think of it as a space party bus. With a crew. And a kitchen. And a pool... And a hotel. And a two seater plane... I guess everyone is invited to go for a ride once it's available. Even you Sinperium. I'll set up a stateroom with medical equipment so you can recover from your injuries in style.
Edit: Live stream over, but here is the cutlass commercial
Upgraded my (what is now known as the Black variant) cutlass to the (Blue) Police/Interceptor variant. Which when combined with the electroskin hull and the blackbeard stealth skin, should be pretty funny to fly on up in a relatively lawless area looking like a pirate, then turn the skin off to reveal a police interceptor... Or the other way, cruise on up looking like a cop so they let their guard down and then flip the pirate logos on and do what pirates do.
Also for anyone who's backed and can play Arena Commander, for the next week (Oct. 10th - 17th), everyone has access to all five currently playable ships. 300i, Aurora, F7-C Hornet, 350R, and M50. Enjoy.
I must say that the 890 looks great although I cannot justify the $600 myself. Flying other ships beyond my Aurora has brought into the play that the way each ship flies is completely different and you have to learn how to fly each ship separately.
I find that the hornet makes destroying stuff rather fun and easy. Almost makes me want to upgrade my Aurora to something a little more "shiny"
That cutlass commercial knocked it out of the park for me... I always wanted a cutlass, and now I really want a red and blue cutlass. Why do these things have to be so expensive.
It's only expensive if you can't wait. Once the PU is live, the only cost you have to get a new ship is your time... And if you're having fun while playing, then time is irrelevant. Pledging now just means more will be spent right now to make a better game to start with. Which is good for everyone.
If you like the way they all fly a little bit differently, try playing with the weights. Putting heavy guns on the hornet's wings for example makes it fly differently then when they're closer to the center, even more so when one of the wings get's blown off and the center of mass changes making the thruster positions far less effective. I once had to ram my ship into the terraformer to break off the other wing just to make it fly better.
That is cool. I knew they had some effect, but I did not realize that it was this thoroughly modeled.
As to the pledging, I know, but I really want to play with it. I won't as I want to earn each ship in the PU, but that cutlass is very tempting. So is that freelancer
That's where people like me come in. I've got the ships, Bison needs the crew, and even if crew isn't your thing, a hangar visit is always possible just to walk around and in the various ships.
I'm gonna need a lot of repair bots just for routine maintenance. My poor AMX-1.
Oh, and here's the recording of the livestream for anyone who missed it and still wants to see it.

Sin, you should probably add this link in the OP so people who don't follow this thread regularly can see it.
Oh my gawd!!!!!!! MOAR!!!!!!!!
Yeah, it's looking so good. I can't wait for the PU!
I'm happy.
What did you guys think of the FPS demo?
I thought it looked good. However I think the pace needs slowing down a little. It looked a little too 'Run & Gun' in my opinion.I'd prefer the pace to be similar to Arma 3 and R6 Ravenshield. You need a slower pace to push for a more tactical style game, if you can move fast and shoot accurately while doing so then the best tactic becomes constantly moving which is counter-intuitive to their stated goals.
Also I think either the armor/HP or the weapon damage needs tweaking. Seems like the weapons aren't lethal enough.
Obviously this is stuff they can balance going forward. I just hope that they ARE going to change it. We were promised a slower, tactical style shooter. I don't want COD in space.
I'd have to agree. Seems a bit too fast paced in the demo. But then again, it was a controlled setting with players who had no real fear of losing a life. Granted they knew that once they were dead, they were out, but as far as they're concerned, it's just an FPS life. Tie that loss of life in with all of your assets and activities in the full PU, and I'm fairly certain, they'd slow down and look around corners and take cover more rather then just run and gun in an open warehouse/hangar. I know I would if there were some significant consequences I'd have to deal with later on after the fight if I died.
They did start off checking doors and clearing hallways before the shooting started, so that shows some promise to the tactical direction. Once they made contact the tactics went right out the window.
Edit- One thing I did notice was that they were missing a lot due to prolonged use of the automatic fire. I also noticed people bitching about that in the comments saying CIG should get rid of the sight recoil and all that. Those people are idiots because we're going for reality here and you don't get perfect aim with a fully automatic rifle when you're unloading the entire clip in one burst like you do in COD and other FPS titles. Hopefully, the cost of ammo and the low hit rate will weed out the FPS kids and allow those of us who actually use tactics and only fire 2 or 3 round bursts to shine forcing everyone to adapt to the more proper way of close quarters combat. Fully auto is a cover fire tactic meant to keep the enemy from poking their heads out from behind cover to see where you're moving to, not to blow a hole through body armor.
Yea... pre-ordering it... Whooohooo!!!
Well, depending on the weapon. I mean stuff like M60's an LSW's can be pretty damn accurate in sustained fire, but then you're usually firing them from a bi-pod or something, plus the recoil systems are more sophisticated. I think from memory suppression drills are usually one round every three seconds. Conserves ammo and keeps the target too scared to poke their head out. So full auto is a bit of a waste for suppression unless you are laying down covering fire with a support weapon.Full auto is great for shooting off short bursts in quick succession though, also good for clearing rooms and urban combat where you might have to fire on a group quickly. As long as it is a realistic recoil, aka pulls up slightly (and usually to the right) rather than a RNG dispersion then it is good imo.I also think that moving at a run should severely impact accuracy for the sake of balance.Did anyone else notice it sounded like they had voice porting working in game? Some of the chatter in those narrow passages sounded like they had a bit of an echo to them.
The EMP Grenade looked like the Star Citizen equivalent of a flash-bang which was pretty cool.
Watching the full live stream, when CR is talking about how they model for the FPS, he specifically says they have the gun shoot where it's facing, and a Travis pulls the trigger, it does go up and to the right. Multiple times. About 20 minutes in if you wanna jump right to it.
FULL PAX AUS STREAM:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/14272-PAX-Australia-Livestream
In the Illfonic video they say shooting from the hip is highly inaccurate, and CR in the live stream says moving and shooting at the same time would be inaccurate and that you have to move slowly, and use your iron sight or scope to produce accurate shots.
Also the echo in the FPS demo is actually from the echo in the room being picked up by the headsets. They're broadcasting the conversations over the room PA and that's what you're hearing, but I do believe they've already looked into things like binaural sound and that room echo/door cut off/radio chatter delay stuff from a company who's name escapes me at the moment.
Ok cool, I'll have to watch the full presentation!Sounds good though, all my concerns sound like they're fully covered =D
Absolutely watch the full presentation. I watched the demo on it's own, and was satisfied with it, however, a couple of days later I watched the full stream and when things are put into perspective and you have the full context of the presentation before the demo, it ends up being quite a bit more impressive.
But back to the point about the pace, I'd have to agree with you on that, it is faster then one would expect considering the push for higher levels of tactics, but I'm withholding judgement based on two things. The first is the fact that everyone is used to the COD style of play since that's really the only style available until this goes public. The second fact is that even though they knew it was one death and you sit out the rest of the match, there's still no fear of penalty. When the PU is live and these systems are all brought together and a loss of life has a significant impact on your assets, relations, and character's future in general, I believe we'll see the pace slow down to less run and gun and shoot up the room and head more in the direction of, "I need to protect my own ass first and not destroy everything in the process if I want to stay alive and maintain a good reputation and continue to get contracts for jobs."
Really in this demo, there continued to be no fear of dying (the long term effects anyway), therefor the gameplay was undoubtedly going to remain the same, and I'm sure that most of the yet to be implemented toys like stun grenades and automated defenses will slow movement down as well. So *fingers crossed* here's to hoping that those of us who prefer a tactical strike will be able to weed out the kids who have no idea what it's like to suffer penalties for doing stupid things. I miss playing Rainbow 6 on MPlayer.
Oh heck yeah man. A good tactical FPS is leaps and bounds above twitch shooters.I used to play Rainbow 6 Ravenshield, and Swat 4 heaps with my brothers via a LAN set up. We also used to pull all-nighters playing Arma 2 Warfare. The best thing about Tactical shooters is that while twitch reflexes are needed to an extent; the skills of critical thinking, small squad tactics and careful movement are vital.A team that coordinates and uses CQB tactics will 99% of the time beat the run & gunners. I can't wait to join up with people who know how to work as a team and take down targets with precision and teamwork.
300 series is available for all to play with in arena commander. Also the second anniversary sale is on for the next week, so that means ships that aren't normally available in the store are available, as well as some limited number ships will make an appearance at some point during the next week. An Idris would hurt me. It really would. I want one, but it's the holidays and money needs to be spent elsewhere...
Bison, since I got a set of Advocacy Tools (basically a police baton and handcuffs) and then later CIG fixed the cutlass blue upgrade to include them as well leaving me with a second set, I figured, what the hell, I picked up a pair of model 2 Arclight sidearms since I didn't have one for myself yet in the sale today. So, that means you get the extra set of each because really, no self respecting captain of mine is gonna be in command and not be able to handle an unruly guest or crewman... (And that goes for all of my captains when I get rich enough to afford it, unless they work pro bono, then hell, I'll even buy them an environmental coat or something a little more captainy if an item like that ever becomes available...)
Someone gets a little out of control, hit 'em with the stun baton and put them in cuffs, they still want to be an asshole... Shoot them in the head. My ship, my rules.
-Edit-
Oh and Wintercross and anyone else following the evolution of the FPS mechanic, check this out: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/engineering/14318-Design-Healing-Your-Spacemen
More info on how health is going to work, how you can keep track of it, and how it'll help make FPS more slow and calculated rather then run and gun.
Sorry, double post.
Yeah I read that, it looks really promising! Looks like they haven't forgotten what they promised and are going the path of hardcore tactical FPS!
I'm going to enjoy blasting pirates who don't fight intelligently. I'll pick my cover and wait for them to slip up >=D
HORNET!
Now that I have your attention, the Hornet is free to fly for all backers this week. Get your dogfight on all you Aurora jockeys and prove to the world that all of that training and holding your own in a sub par combat ship means you're just a super nova of death in a real combat ship.
Pew pew pew...
Damnit.. still need to upgrade my graphics card. v__v
My current card is not compatible with SC. Waiting on my new one.
