Chris Roberts--the primary creator of Games such as Privater, Wing Commander and Freelancer is back in action!.
FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
Welcome!
If you’ve made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.
If not, you’re still welcome!
I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.
I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.
I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.
With the power of today’s computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.
With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.
If you’ve played my games, you’ll know that’s what I love to do.
I’m here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.
I hope you’ll be as excited by it as I am.
My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.
If you register below you’ll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game’s website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It’s my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.
The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.
My name is Chris Roberts.
And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.

The link is here (and "42" is what will get you in if you get stuck). Go enroll and let this guy know you are interested--this is the original scfi game maker who broke all the rules and did the things no one else would.
I would pay for this game in advance without even knowing what it was.
I believe the link gives you the chance to be an alpha-beta tester for the game during the next two years. I'd highly recommend it.
I also think it would be fantastic if Stardock and Ironclad sent him a note of support (I'm just sayin'...)
The assumption is that if one is destroyed, the UEEN will add one to the build queue at the shipyards and when it's complete, they'll keep the new one and mothball the oldest one somewhere for the explorers to find. This prevents cap ship spam because they will always be in limited number and the time it takes to build one would be quite long, so if multiple go down in one battle, it could be several months or longer before they're replaced.
The same applies for the smaller ships too. If one is destroyed, as long as it has hull insurance, once you file the claim, a new one will start to be built and the insurance company will replace the hull upon completion... However, we're also told that it will be in similar condition as the last known safe point has recorded, so I'm kinda confused on the whole replacement thing and Wingman didn't have an answer either. If you have to wait for a new one to be built, then you should get a brand new hull, not a like condition replacement, if you get a like condition replacement, as long as one is available, you shouldn't have to wait for a new one to be built. I kind of exposed a flaw in their insurance system with that question.
Maybe we'll end up with a choice of wait for a new one or get a like condition one with less/no wait?
Either way, the design will be cool for auto-balancing events in the universe. Huge battle goes down destroying tons of ships and suddenly the economy will get a boost as there is demand for replacements (also likely driving up the cost due to high demand)It would be interesting if we also see a tangible effect on the UEE if a heap of their ships are killed by players.
Very Cool. Thank you for posting that!! I feel it.

Unless I can get a job, there isn't much I can do about getting involved in Star Citizen. I would definitely start out with an Aurora ES, then work my way up to also obtaining a F7C Hornet and a Constellation Andromeda.
I figure if there's some large scale battle (like operation pitchfork or any other large org v org battle) and multiple dozens of ships are scrapped, here's the effect on the economy from what we know and what we're told hopefully we should expect to see.
Those playing salvage careers will be in heaven. They'll be the best way to bring used ships back onto the market, albeit needing lots of repairs.
Raw materials will need to be explored for and then mined followed up with transported to factories for processing. PMC's will likely be tapped to protect mineral claims. (Four jobs in one point)
Finished goods will need to be transported to other factories for assembly into ships and their components.
Piracy will become lucrative do to the high value of goods in times of need which will force merchants to hire PMC's to protect their routes and ships.
Players that lost their ships and are waiting for replacements/building up funding to buy a new ship will work as crew for miners and merchants until they have their own ship back.
With all of this money trading hands, the prices of components will certainly go up as those who did not lose ships and who are or want to be making high value mining and trade runs will upgrade components on their ships to maximize profits. Traded in parts will likely be used on salvaged or new hulls to increase speed of production.
Eventually, the demand will subside and the inflation will fade away and things will go back to normal until the next furball happens.
Also NPCs will outnumber players 1000 to 1 so no group, no matter how large they are will be able to manipulate the economy as there will always be 1000 times more pressure from the NPCs to bring it back into a "balanced" state. So the manipulation above can really only happen if the groups involved are willing to sacrifice a lot to do it which would probably make it not worth it to try to intentionally make a profit from creating your own war. Everyone else could profit from it though.
And another point of note, there will be communication delay. If you're on one end of the empire, it may take hours to a day in real time before news of something reaches you (unless you're talking outside of the game on teamspeak or something). But should some first time explorer out there find a new jump point, chart it, and find piles of valuable resources on the other side and report it all to the UEE so they get naming rights to the system, if you're on the other side of the empire, you probably won't hear about it until an info runner or an automatic drone relay service has enough time to cross the empire and deliver the message Pony Express style. By the time you travel there, everything could already be scooped up by other players. Just a couple of added dynamics to ensure a fun time is had by all.
I managed to notify Cloud Imperium Games about the Galactic Guides issue via Contact Us and they actually fixed it.
Yeah, they're good like that. They treat their fans right.
Customer Service is awesome too. I had an issue once, sent concierge an email about it, in under 60 seconds (the time it took for 3 email exchanges {felt more like instant messaging then email}), my issue was fixed. Wasn't expecting that level of service which is pretty much unheard of these days, so I sent them a box of gourmet cupcakes the next day, which I'm led to believe were a big hit.
That is really neat to hear. Glad I joined the crowd. Really excited for their next module.
Co-op, so Sinperium can experience being on the winning side somewhere other then just in his imagination.
I didn't really doubt they had good service, the problem is I am not really in any position to be able to truly appreciate what they are doing.
So I guess the way friend codes work is you start a private match and get the code, you give it to your friends, they go into private matches and enter it in and you connect... And I was kind of hoping it was more of a unique code for each person, enter it once and never have to do it again. Oh well.
Yeah, that seems to be the current system, but right now they disabled that system till they fix it. They found a bug that they couldn't have found until they launched it anyway. Maybe in the future they will allow more of a unique friend code.
What saved you from my verbal wrath was an account issue. It has been resolved now. Do not invoke my wrath foolish mortal.I actually am looking for where to drill holes in the frame of my office chair so that I can mount dual sticks and I already own VoiceAttack.
You will feel your pain...oh yes....you will feel it.

Such strong words Sinperium and then you fail at posting it.
All I can say is there IS more than one way to skin a cat. Oh yes, Fluffy--there is.
My Retaliator is definitely a bad ass ship. Will be making sure that in the PU it gets converted back to this version, having bombs/torpedoes instead of whatever they come up with for the civilian market version. This I vow. I don't even care what the cost is. I got it to strike fear in capital ships and that's exactly what it'll do. Bison... You're gonna have a tough time figuring out which one to fly if they keep making all of my ships this awesome.
It really looks like you are going to need a crew Stant123...
Well, I have a pilot/co-pilot/RIO/captain/co-captain/business partner/driver/turret gunner/crew chief/load master/warehouse manager/chief engineer/hangar boss/dozens of other things we don't know are possible yet in Bison. Then there's me who has trouble deciding between chocolate or cookie dough ice cream and then just gets both... So no not really, I don't need a crew, Bison does.
When we have a PU to play in and I figure out what is fun for me, I'll probably join an org who will wet themselves over my personal fleet. So that should help some. Just added a Aegis Reclaimer to the collection.
I mentioned I wanted an Aurora ES, a F7C Hornet, and a Constellation Andromeda for a reason, because they personify my dreams of flying the Millennium Falcon, an T-65 X-wing starfighter, and Serenity, though I would like to at least be a crew member on some of the larger ships eventually.
And I'm saving my precious quarters to have access to this new frontier!!!!
All good ships to want to be on.
Send Bison quarters and he'll give you quarters on a ship that needs crew. =D
