Chanced upon this one today. As an avid sci-fi fan, this game is just wonderful. You command a ship on a mission across space, doggedly pursued by the evil Rebellion. Along the way you mostly fight other ships, but there are text-based missions (ala Space Rangers). Combat is real-time, but not in an arcade sense; you select your weapon's targets, your crews assignments, and includes genre staples such as power distribution and subsystem targeting. Your ship catches fire, has hull breaches, gets boarded, and you have to direct your crew to handle the mess or die. Permadeath is not an option in this title, it's the law.
Not for everyone, but if you like Trek, Wars, Firefly, or the old Starflight games, this game is for you. Gave it four stars on GOG (I don't think I'm capable of giving a rouge five stars; I love them, but they cause me so much grief )
I bought this game five hours ago and have yet to stop...except to type this of course
Any other space junkies out there? My best ship and crew have made it to sector 3, before running out of air. I just love this game!
Just beat it for the first time! Rebel Cruiser unlocked! Got the strongest beam in the second sector and it carried me all the way to the end. I saved up all my missiles then used two small bombs to keep the boss shields down.
I lost two crewmen in the second stage. The enemy teleported a boarding droid into my cloak room. They are so nasty, causing a breach and taking forever to kill. That prevented me from dodging the next surge. Fortunately there was a Store with crewmen in the last stand, so I just got some new ones, repaired and went back in. Also had a small heart attack when they disabled my droids in the third phase and managed to hit three missiles moments later. Like 48% evasion didn't matter.
I'm deep in an obssession with this game.
Started playing 2 days ago, managed my first win last night, still have 2 ships I haven't unlocked yet though. But yeah, I've been playing almost non-stop with all my free time.
As others have already said, killing the final boss is easy if you kill off most of it's crew in the first stage. Basically I won the first time I played a boarding-party strategy to the end. Also I really am starting to believe Burst Lasers in general as well as the 2-shot Heavy Laser are hands down the best "conventional" weapons in the game. Sure, Missiles ignore shields, but burst lasers have no problem stripping away shields and still getting hits in, aren't affected by defense drones(very important for stage 2 of final boss), and to top it all off have a >1.0 DMG:power ratio.
Of course there are a few exceptions(the 2-shot missing weapon is great as it is a good way to eat up defense drone intercepts). But by and large I think Bombs are generally a better use of your missile supply- they allow you to disable key systems and are not stopped by shields or defense drones.
Beams can be great, but are a bit more circumstantial as you need a reliable way to take down shields and keep them down or they do nothing. They rock at dropping Zulton Shields fast through.
Also droids could use some rebalancing. Defense I & hull repair are amazing, attack/beam decent, but boarding drone and anti-personel drone both cost too much power for what they do(or rather too much to justify not just using your own crew/openign airlocks to accomplish the same thing). Defense II also costs a bit too much power,e specially considering it's ability to block lasers can actually be a drawback(since sometimes shooting down a laser shields would have blocked anyway means not shooting down the missile that comes a moment later).
I'm at work now and I just read through this board and I can't wait to get home and try this game out.
Last time I was this excited was when I played that new Dungeon crawler a few months back... Legend of Grimrock...
OMFG............... I got the crystal entity. I found the Zoltan outpost in the 6th sector. Everything was good to go. At the last fight in that sector I teleport my crystal and mantis aboard the enemy. The lockdown is just crazy. But the area starts burning, killing them both. THE NEXT SECTOR WAS THE ROCK HOMEWORLD!
Seriously, it's like a 1 in 100 chance to get a game lined up so you can unlock it and I wasted it all on a pointless fight.
Yeah, that crystal cruiser is a pain. 3 times I've gotten the stasis pod, twice I've found it and the outpost. Neither of those times did I pass the Rock Homeworld. Sadface
