I'm sorry if these issues are already known, but I only got my beta yesterday and I'm experiencing some slight performance issues on my first game and I thought I should do my part for the beta testing process.
1. FPS drop. I should start by mentioning I have an Nvidia 9600GT card with latest drivers, running at 1920x1080. It's a decent card, it does its job in games far more prettier than FE. While in 3D mode I usually get around 25-30FPS, as indicated by Fraps, but while looking at an Imperium zone, with many walls, many trees, 1-2 cities, I experience a FPS drop down to 12FPS which is very noticeable and annoying. The FPS is of course worst when at maximum zoom out (the level before switching to cloth map). I keep the cloth map zoom change level to default. I was able to gain 5 more FPS by disabling outlines. Antialiasing does not seem to affect FPS when switched between 0 and 2. In cloth map I get a constant 60FPS. Disabling Shadows, Particle effects or Pedestrians has no effect on FPS either.
2. Clunky switch between 3D and cloth map. When either zooming in from cloth to 3D or zooming out from 3D to cloth, there isn't a fluid transition, but rather feels like a stop-motion transition and I find myself zoomed in or zoomed out more than I wanted because of this. This issue was also reported by Keith Turner in his preview of Fallen Enchantress on Space Sector. EDIT: After further testing I can say that this issue is caused by antialiasing. When set to 0 the transition is visibly smoother and more fluid. When set to 2 however, it is very clunky, as described.
I didn't think a debug.err was needed for these issues. If anyone has any suggestions, or if more details are needed please say so.
EDIT: Without opening another thread, I should also mention health bars during combat do not update correctly to reflect the actual health of the unit.
EDIT: The Knights of Asok camp building seems to be missing. It shows when not constructed, but when under construction it disappears and doesn't appear even when finished. Its icon does show on the cloth map and it does spawn units. But it's not visible nor selectable in 3D view.
I miss them so much on my 32-bit laptop, the world feels to be in an eternal cataclysm.
Brad, I tried the new patch and I'm very sorry to say that performance is exactly the same for me I used a .981 savegame in order to compare FPS. But I don't suppose that matters.
just tried the new patch....no difference at all
created a new game, at start of game 43fps, no outlines, no AA, but had peds and shadows and shaders
changed graphics options to no outlines, 4x AA, peds, and shadows and shaders.....and.......43fps.....
me thinks no AA to 4x AA should change fps just a little....doesnt seem to be tho. im tired.....gonna have a cookie
That's a real bummer. I don't think there's anything more I can do here without a significant engine update.
Do you two have the same video card by chance? The anti-aliasing thing is a good observation.
I appreciate the effort nevertheless, at least you tried, not many would have. Thank you for that!
I haven't tried 4x, but I can confirm there's no difference in performance between AA 0 and AA 2x, as also noted in my original post.
The best workaround so far is to limit the 3D FOV as much as possible. Btw, I never experience FPS drops in tactical combat.
Can you perhaps tell us a little about what you did that you hoped would improve performance? I'm not computer-illiterate, so maybe it will at least give me an idea to try.
I know the issue is that you want to play it at a high resolution, but my curiousity is a resolution change to something smaller give you a significant improvement to your fps?
As mentioned in an earlier reply, no. Perhaps ~1-3 FPS, insignificant. It's weird...
Maybe it has to do with something else and not the video card...I can't say what, but maybe something in the background is causing a conflict of somekind. Possibly the anti-virus, that is the usual culprit to some of these problems.
I remember back in the GalCiv I days, there was some utility that some people had that had a huge impact on the game and just our game (I forgot the reason). It was some sort of mouse utility.
I haven't given up on this.
On my Windows 8 box, I am having trouble with some of my games on my nVidia 560. And today I saw an article saying that Windows 8 has no affect on game performance but I'm having a huge issue.
But in affect, I can sort of reproduce it because even at lower resolutions, I'm having a problem on my Windows 8 box.
More then 3 years after its release, Windows 7 still has very serious and well known memory leak which makes the machine unresponsive in seconds. At least Windows 8 has an excuse, but still, anything's better than that plagued XP
I will further investigate this issue, it has really weird symptoms. Like for example, the worst FPS areas are in Imperium zones. I can have one city in an Imperium zone in my FOV, and I still get worse FPS than when having 2 cities in my FOV somewhere else. The only extra things are the walls.
Even in other places I still only get 20-25 FPS, but this is decent enough, nothing to complain about, but is still pretty low. Another weird thing is that neither GPU or CPU usage ever reaches 100%. The highest I've seen the GPU go is 80% usage, so maybe it's a video memory problem? Many things to consider and check...
Tried it, no effect.
I still think it's a LOD problem, seeing how pedestrians on/off makes a difference in areas where horses or other resources are shown/hidden. But I'm skeptical because not many others complain about this...
I have a gtx 580 nvidia....latest non beta driver. thx all for the collective effort
You're on Windows 7 right?
On Windows 7, with my GTX 560, it's amazing. But on Windows 8, I get sluggishness even at lower resolutions. The only other game I'm having this issue with is SWTOR (though to be fair, right now, I'm not playing a lot of games). But our other WIndows 8 machines it's perfectly normal.
But the good news is, I think the issue is related. I just have no idea what's causing it. Same driver version on Windows 7 works great. But it's something I think I can get my guys on to look at.
We'll figure it out.
I have an Nvidia 9600GT on Windows 7 64bit. It's an old card, but its 256bit bandwidth is an advantage.
I read people playing FE on XP are forced to use cloth map only, because of CTDs. That makes me feel slightly better. If they can still enjoy the game, I should too
EDIT: Updated the title.
Yes win 7 64bit. i7 930 CPU @ 4.4ghz, 12gb ram, gtx 580. Antivirus is Microsoft security essentials.....that's all I run....oh and afterburner. Now when u say your games run amazing.....is that like 1080p and 60fps using FRAPS amazing?
Whoa, wait, I just got it... You have a GTX 580, the second fastest consumer video card on the market, and you don't have optimum performance? What's the lowest you ever got? Even 43 FPS at the start of the game, when there's literally nothing to render, is way too low.
This gives me hope, maybe only Nvidia cards are affected. Anyway, if such a monster like the GTX 580 gets a performance hit, there's surely nothing wrong with my card's performance
On Windows 7, I get >60FPS 2560x1440 8x anti-aliasing.
On Windows 8, I get about 43 fps and it degrades quickly. But this is just on my machine. Other machines aren't having this issue. But I think it's some nVidia conflict with *something*.
The game runs fine, but I do get this aparent bottle neck as you have pointed out here. I do get a drop in framerate. I'm running nVidia GTX 555m. I hope that you figure this out because I didn't realize that I should be getting a higher framerate.
After things calm down post-release I'm going to have a couple of our engine guys take a look at it.
Yes it seems like an engine problem. It would be interesting to hear some feedback from AMD-ATI cards owners.
I agree with this assessment. Playing on my laptop I have two video cards the integrated video card (HD 3000) and the nVidia GTX 555m. I turned down all the settings loaded a particular map and found that with the nVidia card turned on I can move to a place to get me 6 - 7 fps (with no extra details turned on). But the integrated video card I get a consistent 15 - 16 fps throughout looking around the map (with no extra details turned on).
I've tried playing with the settings on the nvidia control panel to no avail.
I get 60 FPS at the start of the game, and jgiombet with his GTX 580 gets 43...
EDIT: So I started a new .983 game and I get 60FPS everywhere, even in tactical combat, which has nothing to do with game progression... Maybe it's an optimization issue as the game progresses. Will report as I play more. Even switching between research trees and... pretty much everything is instantaneous in this new game, it's wonderful.
How do you see the FPS? Is it a cheat code or some utility you have to install?
Just google FRAPS, they have a free version which you can use to see FPS, take screenshots, record gameplay etc.
I have a gtx 580, ill take a look at my fps.
It seems that the more I explore of the map, the more the FPS decreases, even though I don't have more stuff in my FOV.
