So met my first level 10 Titan, against it I ran 14 capitals and over 150 cruisers, and two starbases in range, plus my level 8 Titan. After some 20 minutes, rebuilding all of my fleet again and again, in constant battle, and spending out my 250k credits I had saved, it died.
Only to face 10 minutes later another level 10 Titan from the same race! [that was quick], where I had a message saying that they had only just completed building it. Another massive fight takes place, after rebuilding 10+ capitals, hundreds of cruises, all streaming to the battle from over 14 frigate factories near by, and built 2 fully loaded starbases within range of this Titan, plus my own level 8 Titan, spending 150k credits on new ships, and the enemy Titans health stays at 17,000, I ditch the game as unatteniable. At this stage I had lost every capital ship, hundereds of cruises and my Titan, TEC Loyalist defensive was down to 18%
I have sadley yet to complete a single game of Rebelion.
1 - kept crashing at 3/4 completion
2 - kept crashing at random intervals.
3 - Unable to beat an enemy Titan, when it was on its own, with every ship slot available to me, max Caps, Max crusiers, Titan [lvl8] and two maxed out Starbases. Supported by 14 local shipyards, 2 local Cap shipyards, max trade income from 40+ planets.
I enjoy a challenge, but this balance seems a shade over the top. How did the enemy create another lvl 10 Titan just minutes after losing one? How can you win if you cannot kill the thing if you throw literally everything at it?
This experince of Rebelion has made me reluctant to invest in starting yet another game, only to met with this stalemate again, there is no joy in meeting this brick wall you cannot beat. I have no problem losing or winning, but give me a fair fight.
I personaly think titans keeping their level is stupid. If your enemy loses their titan it should cause more trouble than just rebuilding it.
The way it is now there is no reason to not suicide run your titan at the start to get it's levels up. If it lost it's levels when killed people would be more protective of their titans and not use them stupidly.
Also it sucks when you have an enemy virtualy wiped out, and they rebuild their darned highlevel titan wich proceeds to eat your fleet like the OP said.
This strategy of 'don't feed the titan' is terrible, and ruins the feel of what a titan should be in my opinion.
The Devs never discussed this issue,
they obviously are fine with it,
but its ridiculous.
Now, now. A titan is a costly investment, and it takes a long time to rebuild. Time in which your enemy surviving titan will ravage your fleet.
Although I will admit with TEC Rebels and Industrial Juggernaut researched it becomes more viable.
The gameplay issue is that if you manage to take out a high level titan and don't allow their crews to transfer, then the other player is pretty much toast at that point - game over. We are looking at balancing this out more in the 1.04 update so that titan build costs increase based on level.
This would be a nice balance change.
The hit ( penalty) should be pretty dramatic........
While it was assumed this was the case, it is very nice to hear this officially...for what it's worth, I agree with the dev reasoning...it may not make "sense" but for gameplay it is the best, titans are just too important to lose their levels upon death...
I don't particularly like that the game is all about titans but it is, and with that in mind, losing a titan's levels truly would be game over in many situations...you could make the argument that "well, losing your titan should be game over cause it's your fault" but that isn't actually true....issues with pathfinding, fleet formations, and phase jumping are completely 100% out of the player's control yet can singlehandedly cause you to lose a titan...
Titans are extremely expensive to build, and even an eco player floating in cash still has to deal with the long production time, which is time you have to abuse the enemy while they don't have a titan...you get penalized enough for losing your titan, doesn't need to be any worse...
Try doing this against a decent human opponent online and see how far it gets you. His titan will level up more from the XP gained from killing yours, then say goodbye to a planet or two when he pushes and your titan is still rebuilding. We're alot more proactive than the AI you know.
Yarlen also explained the other reason too. If your titan died and lost all its levels you might as well quit since the advantage of your opponent will be insurmountable from that point on.
Also... holy hell. That's a pretty awesome change. 1.04 can't come quickly enough.
Wow. Yarlen, this is a great change. Maybe the build time could go up too? The cost of the titan should go up dramatically with the levels, but since you already said that the patch is going into testing I will trust you have this all figured out.
Also, increasing titan build times based upon level as well, so that a lvl 10 titan that gets taken out would take 1.5-2.0 x longer to recover. This will allow you to engage the opponents fleet and/or take a planet or two from them so that when you kill the titan you do actually gain the time required to take territory in the mid/endgame.
In my opinion titans should not gain quite so much power when they level up. It should be the same sort of ratio as cap ship levels. Currently it's ridiculous. (in my opinion... I think you should only be able to build one titan a game but have them be weaker then they are currently so that its actually possible to kill them without a titan. Not easy or even moderately hard... possible.)
Ok. Here's what I'd like to see.
Rebellion should have an option to toggle the following playing styles off and on:
1. titan death means lose one level
2. titan death means the titan can never come back
3. titan death means the titan comes back at level 1
4. titan death means the titan comes back at a cost commensurate to its level (10000 for every level) and at a build time increasing with hit points
5. cap ships have no level limitation. at every level past 10, a cap ship would continue gaining hps, hull, antimatter, shields, speed.
6. titans continue levelling.
Right now i'm playing as the vasari against 9 AI on a 150 planet map. I have 14 cap ships at level 10 and the titan is maxed as well. The 9 AI slowly get stronger, since every time I kill them they return with the same ship levels, which reduces the fun of it in my opinion. If I blow up somebodies ship, it should really be dead, and I should continue to gain some sort of benefit for it. Now, to concede a point, I think the exp required to get to level 11 should be huge, so that it would be virtually impossible to ever hit, say, level 80, but on a 150 planet map, fighting 9 AI, I bet you could eventually level ships up to 40 or so.
Build a starbase during the battle and lay mines. Watch all the explosions.
Personally I'd like to see titan's have their vulnerable infancy period extended as well as the risks of building a titan increased; perhaps something like:
-Increase exp needed to reach each level on titans by 50-60%
-Increase exp granted for killing enemy titans by 50-60%
That way rushing a titan will carry some risk, as the guy who's fleeting up with frigates has a fair chance of killing the titan before it reaches level 2 or 3. Would also make frigates a bit better as relatively speaking they would feed titan less then they presently do(smaller cost of using them).
Also, I very much understand why the devs don't want titans dropping to level 1 when rebuilt- that said, I see no reason why a small exp level loss is unreasonable. Losing a single level wouldn't be an atuolose yet would make taking risks on a titan to rake up some extra exp before dying less of a tennable strategy.
Heck, It could be even less then a level. Honestly I think it would make a big difference if destroyed titans even just lost their current progress towards the next level on death(have titans always revive at the minimum exp necessary to be their current level).
