So as VR you can have like ten titans we will just call em starbases. Just one of these players ruins a game. Cool. Same old story from the original sins. Game balance issues.
No ones SB consumes fleet supply so why should Orkies
No one else has a starbase that can phase jump either.
Looks like we have another
You need to come play on ICO to get a better sense of balance.
Dude, orkies are toooooooootally unfair.
I never play MP and never will, but shouldn't you MP's who tout your brain power over the AI's ( abilities) be able to defeat another player regardless of the jumping starbase?
I mean if this was real life battles, would one side just say not fair? or figure out a way to beat the opposing enemy?
btw just for discussion.........................
Nice argument, lol.
Starbases where originally intended to be heavily fortified defensive bulwarks that were also capable of engaging multiple targets offensively. In fact Starbases are capable of engaging/attacking more enemies simulataneously than any other unit in the game (16 base, upgradable to 20 enemy targets). The opportunity cost of fully upgrading a starbase was it remained tied to that gravity well.
Also, I play SP, MP and heavily mod the game. The fact of the matter is you have less of an opportunity understanding the balance of the game and associated inbalances if you only play SP.
Additionally, the AI will never use this affectively in Sins and for SP VR players it just cheapens the gameplay experience by removing most of your risk and opportunity cost of decision making. Maybe you find that fun, but I don't.
I'd describe how it impacts MP balance but you seem to already have a negative opinion towards MP games so I won't try.
I'm also a SP only player (crappy Internet connection). I was play testing last night with the VR against a Unfair AI, looking at possible opening strategies with the Desolator. I quickly jumped up to Starbase mobilization, built a couple of maxed out Orkies and went to war. For the vast majority of the game I researched no fleet supply upgrades (stayed at 100 points). I clobbered every fleet the AI built.
The issue is that I did this with zero impact to my economy. In order to project this kind of military power with a fleet, I would probably need 500 - 600 fleet supply or three fleet supply upgrades. Three upgrades would tax my economy by 28%. The same level of military power with Orkies and my economy runs at 100%. This is a really big advantage. It adds up to a lot more money and resources rolling in.
Don't get me wrong, I love the jumping Orkie. It's great fun to advance on an enemy with three different Orkies on three different fronts. But the MP guys do have a very deep understanding of the game. If the game balance is broken, we SP guys can just bump the AI level up or down to compensate. The MP players don't have that luxury.
My two cents on the debate is that an extra upgrade on top of the Phase Stabilizer to allow the Orkie to jump would go a long way toward bringing the VR as a whole back into balance.
bama498, you are completely correct in your analysis of the strengths of the orkulus starbase. I salute you !
Now if other racial starbases could move to kill vasari fleet supporting a jumping orkulus starbase, we might actually have something that would start to limit the insane tactical advantage that a jumping orkulus is.
Oh and have it cost a capital ship upgrade and 100-150 fleet supply. As you need a capital ship team to navigate this big bulky titan capital ship, and it will need a lot of supplies to operate it in the vast reaches of space. also a limit of 1 per Vasari rebel player would help a LOT.
after all, it is just as good as a titan in many ways. So treat it like a titan.
Here it comes....the campaign to for all factions to have moving SBs....
Thanks.
I've been thinking a bit more on this issue as well. What if Orkies needed phase gates to jump? This would greatly increase the research cost (and time) before allowing the Orkie to move to friendly gravity wells. It would also require that the VR have either a level 6 Marauder or Kosturas built before the Orkie could be used to attack.
The overall effect here would be to push the usefulness of jumping Orkies much later in the game and force the VR player to coordinate its attack. They would still be very powerful, but at a later point in the game and would require more player coordination. They would also become vulnerable to enemy players taking out military labs to stop the Kosturas that are needed for the Orkie to attack.
I just want to congratulate oddbodd for posting a non-brony picture.
No matter how you slice it, a phase jumping starbase paired with a titan is overpowered. Once you hit that mobility point, you have the advantage over anyone with a single titan, an immobile starbase and regular fleet. Even if you lose your mobile starbase and titan, you'll rebuilt the titan and move in another starbase. Just stupid.
I read this right after I posted some ponies on your MOBA mod thread......
And yet, you avoided yet another brony picture here. What are the odds?
