As the title states did the developers REALLY put in clues as to what the vasari are running from in the games code? The fact we have not seen any legitimate answers is rather suspicious... Nor the fact that the serious modders have not yet found anything either.
I certainly hope that little tidbit was not merely to hype the game, because then I would be sad.
from what I know of c & c++, yes the c compiler(s) DO assemble any assembly code blocks during the compile of a program(at lease back in gcc from back in 2004 it did , and from what I remember about visual c++6 it did also, so I would expect the later compilers to do it also as a form of backward compatability.
BUT I have NOT done ANY searches as it is of minor interest to me.
harpo
Then how would any message actually get stored in the code itself without the compiler annihilating it?
Show of hands, who else besides Volt_Cruelerz thought the joke about space ponies wasn't deadpan obvious?
Well, that was a mean trick because figuring out the 'hint' would involve an EULA violation.
Frogboy (or somebody important), we need help!
has someone compared old diplomacy files with new ones ? maybe a list of changed files would help to filter files with no change.
btw. would hide the secret in the map ancient gifts
Well, we could consider all the "dead" files that are completely uses yet still somehow come with the game...
For example, what is "IonBurst"? Seriously, what is it? Before you say it, it is not the ion bolt of the akkan (that is "IonBlast")....this is some extra ability that IIRC has been around since Sins Original and does absolutely nothing....there are other files like this, and while I don't think the "secret" is in these files, it might not be such a bad thing to look at them....
It wouldnt really be clever to hide the hints there, it would just be a pain in the ass. Arent there dozens of these abilities, maybe even hundreds? It could be a single line in any one of them.
My best guess at this point is that it's some sort of achievable easter egg.. Use ability x at planet y under conditions y,z, and alpha.
I don't recognize your name yet and you only have 1 point of karma. For all I know, you're a noob who just joined in Rebellion that doesn't know what Space Ponies are yet, so it wasn't deadpan obvious.
They said it wasn't in the data files though..
This is true but what else do we have to look at? Actually looking at any of the game's code is far beyond most people...even old games require expertise to do so...
We COULD always wait for the devs to email Volt to borrow his renditions...
But then I'd have to tell you about this non-disclosure agreement I just sig.. I mean... Uh.. Umm.. Yeah.. That's a great idea.
They said it was for modders to figure out...
I'm rubbish at these riddles, but lots of other game companies like to put out hidden messages. It seems a bit like people here might be a bit too naive on how to find the clues. Other game companies doing this almost always use a variety of encryption technologies and players tend to solve those riddles.
Hints in textures? Maybe. But probably not like suggested here (as in "under specific circumstances you might see a picture inside the picture). Encrypting text in pictures might have been the smarter idea.
Or it might be possible that some garbage code hase been added somewhere else that looked at it with a Hex Editor might reveal an enrypted message.
So far is has been said that the message has been encrpyted in the code (which I would not really think textures would be part of) and it has been said, that modders are able to reengineer data files too easily.
Hints pretty much too some sort of encrypted message that might be revealed by using reverse engineering or steganography tools (like hex editors?).
If youre looking at stuff like this, there are quite a lot of competent people who are having fun solving quite complex riddles: http://www.jibble.org/cyber-security-challenge-uk-winner/
That makes sense to me and would be the most fun way also, for everyone not just modders. Maybe even something like a particle effect.
I´m... im so lazy to think something, and i don´t know programming... zzzzzzzz.
Better wait for someone who already knows bout` this thing!
Code or Texture analysis... take your pick. That movie with all the textures and strange images seen on the new Vasari Capitalship while smoking peyote might have something to them or we could just go way out of the ballpark.
Arnor & Dread Lords... from Galactic Civ II
The other group of Precursors, who wanted to guide them, began to actively thwart the actions of the Dread Lords and so began a civil war that lasted thousands of years. At the end, the Dread Lords were on the verge of victory. In a single climactic battle, the fate of the galaxy would be settled. But then, suddenly, they all disappeared in a flash. Well, not all of them. A handful of Arnor and Dread Lords remained across the galaxy, but in very low numbers. Without access to their technology, which required an infrastructure greater than what a handful of survivors could provide, they faded from view. Their departure opened the door for the younger races.
Could the Vasari have royally screwed the pooch in that lab and the Dread Lords returned? They would take over the infrastructure required to resurrect their technology and go after the Vasari since they're the only younger race in firing distance.
PJI creators leave universe for new dimension/phase space/whatever. Vasari-Occupied Kron's transport research lab turns one on. Opens gateway to creators who proceed to annihilate everything in sight.
Because the Vasari have reached the pinnacle of phase travel, the chasers can't catch up, though they keep pace, suggesting that they too have a mastery of the technology.
Sounds just like the Shadows...I knew the rinse/repeat SciFi would plague us all, hard to come up with new stuff these days....
That would be cool. The original builders of the PJI were wiped out by species X from phase space, they returned once they had killed all the PJI builders now the vasari in their ignorance of how the PJI works have been tinkering with its technology in the vasari experimental transportation lab when they activated something allowing species X to come through.
OR
The PJI builders are now extinct but they fought some war vs machines or species X or something and they could not win so they sealed it/them away in phase space using the PJI's. Vasari activated the true function of the PJI allowing its return.
I'm personally inclined to believe they did it to hide themselves. If anyone's read Revelation Space, think of the Shrouds made by Sun Stealer's faction of the Amarentin to protect them from the Inhibitors.
well, 7DS got the dark fleet in story-wise by refugee vasari scientists working for TCA to develop phase gate technology for them (like WW2 when Japanese/German Scientists were working/slaved to usa and russia). Vasari turned it on and it drew in thousands of Dark Fleet ships from their phase pockets. Still think it's the Arnor/Dread Lords.
Hi,
i love rebellion and soase. the story is cool so far, cool enough to "live" every game i play. About this Vasari threat i think we wont get an answer, because they were talking about hints, right? That means as much as a clue?! No Answer, no epic telling or complete story. Ive don some of the ship-watching thing too, but i dont think it can be that obvious.
Whatever it was, it killed a whole fleet, whole planets and systems, without leaving a trace?! It cant be a ship or fleet alone, because that wouldnt drive the vas survivors so mad, that they cant describe it?! Must be worse i think. Else we would put up a titan fleet and drive it back to where it came from! So it could possibly be some catastrophic event, such as a growing black hole, that actually destroys universe, thus being absolutely inevitable and driving those who know mad. But then, how did they escape? On the other hand that could fit to the theory, that it all started in a lab, vas scientists create a big black hole, that gets out of control and kills all and everything. The cros sci-fi thoughts would be funny but from the side of stardock pretty uninspired.
I would actually love a clue about the way we can find the hint, because i want this answer
..
Well, maybe if we come up with enough ideas for the race, and StarClad is panicking and crapping itself wondering how they're going to come up with the mystery race/thing, they'll just borrow one of our ideas and stick it into an update.

The compiler will just put the inline assembly with the C++ code around it, but (I think) it doesn't optimize it. The only place that I can think of where the message would be is in a branch of dead code written in assembly because if it was written in C++ the compiler would have optimized it away. Now, if it was written in C++ and optimized out of Rebellion by the compiler, that would just suck...
But the only way I can think of identifying the inline assembly is if they used commands that the compiler usually doesnt, or in sequences the compiler usually doesnt. But to know that you would probably either have to work at Microsoft in the Visual C++ Compiler division, or you would have to decompile the compiler...
All in all, if they put it in the code via inline assembly, this is not going to be fun...
At that point, I think that even modders would be a bit hard pressed to find it unless they were specifically looking for it.
