Firstly, let me say thankyou for make a halfway decent follow to Diplomacy, it's taken some of the better ideas from the modding community and integrated them reasonable well into the game.
Ok now that's out of the way. Secondly that are still some glaring bugs that still need to be addressed and will hopefully be done so within the next patch or two.
Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in, but here goes anyway.
Since I not much of an online multiplayer (crappy wireless broadband service), I tend to player mainly Single player games with and without mods. But the one bug (if it is that) is that the AI is rebuilding titans it lose at the same ship level at which they died at. at this is happening is every game I've played to date (4x 5+hour games, and over a dozen 2-3 hours games).
In one instance where I'd managed to back an AI opponent into a 3 planet corner of a large map (the rest of the map is mine at the stage of the game) and used it's titan to decimate most of my attack fleet of Capital ships and other fodder and it dies at level 9, just as I'm rebuilding the fleet's capital ships less that one phase jump away, no more that that 8 minutes have passed and the same AI jumps in with another level 9 Titan and decimates the new built capital fleet in less than 90 seconds (and it only had 3 carrier frigate/cruisers in support).
If this isn't the AI cheating than I don't know what is?
Once again, thanks for the great game, please fix the bugs so it can become a bloody awesome game.
I think that it is fair that the titans should lose two to three levels for dying, but I see how it can end a game if it is destroyed and loses all its experience. By allowing it to retain some of its previous experience, the titan can still put up a good fight, but there is still a punishment for losing the ship (besides costs.)
The fact of the matter right now is that people are running through the game with level 10 titans and no one can break anothers' defense; they just have to have five minutes to pump out another titan and then return to battle. By allowing people and the AI to retain level 10 titans, it is giving an unfair advantage to those who have lost a titan, both human and AI.
Losing levels seems to be the best option here. I can see why the developers chose to have the titans retain their levels, but unfortunately, it has created more problems than it solved. Most of these new problems could be taken care of by making titans lose levels when they die, but not all levels. It discourages people from wasting their titans on suicide runs, while also encouraging them to take the risk of attacking another person. It also allows defenders to recover from a titan loss late-game without giving them a major advantage or disadvantage.
My personal opinion is that I prefer the idea of losing some levels, but this new implementation of keeping all levels has made the game worse, not better. I hope the devs have some kind of fix; hell, even a tick box in the options screen for games that says "retain titan level" would be good for me. I just want an alternative to what is there now.In the meantime, does anyone know of a mod that can change the game so that they lose some/all their levels so it is more like previous versions?
I think the main reason Stardock wanted Titans to keep there levels (though I don't personally agree with either of these)
1) Because there is only 1 titan you can have in the entire game at any one time, therefore the effect of it keeping its levels doesn't seem severe as it sounds as the 1 titan can only be in one place at a time.
2) As previously stated, Titans take a very long time to level/build.
Personally I feel the Titans shouldn't retain there level upon death, should level quicker (but slower than capital ships) and you can purchase a level (only one) similar to capital ships and you can have more than one at any given time (but a limited amount like capital ships), also build a lot faster than they do presently.
I think then they wouldn't be used for suicide missions, it wouldn't seem unrealistic and people would have fun building more than one.
P.S. Vasari Starbase Phase jumping, I haven't actually tested/used this yet in game incredibly, but I admit it does seem very OP, there must still be a limit to how many Starbases a Player can have in a Gravity well? Unless the phase jump ability of the Vasari Starbase overrides this, then it would be OP, you could build an entire fleet of Star bases in a choke point, only your titan might survive the onslaught.
Why is that when I play rebellion it feels like there is a black hole opening up in my heart just sucking what enjoyment I had left for SOASE? Ironclad, I'll give it to you for being an Indie studio and SOASE being your first baby, but Stardock... really? How much did IC actually do on this? Did IC just rubber stamp stuff for you? "yeah, yeah, fine, fine, titans.. yeah... okay, do it. race cars? wtf? sure... leave us alone, we're doing a moba."
I'm rather sad now that Rebellion didn't come out on disk because I now really wish I could pop my Vanilla, Trinity and Rebellion disks in the microwave and nuke them for 5 seconds. So cheated.
oh well, there is modding.
If Titans retain levels, they need to take longer to rebuild. Perhaps the time to rebuild it should be proportional to its level.
You all forget that one of the titan can use that as a way to counter balance is ultimate...
Anyway if you kill the titan once, it's even easier after...
I think the best alternative is if you put your head in there instead.
oh and here i thought Eradica's Unyielding Will can't be used for suicidal assault cuz i didn't know Titans keep their levels.
Hey, just to throw two more cents in:
I'm with wbino, if a titan dies (even mine) I want it truly dead. the reward for managing to destroy one is the damn thing is gone, the high-level abilities it had, all the XP it earned, should be erased. otherwise, the best way to fight them becomes never to fight them. Go around, they only have one thus it can only be in one place. It totally changes the game to have the titans, in direct contravention to the lore, the existing rules and the reality of how combat works, to have a fully-trained, battle-hardened crew in place on a deck that still smells like fresh paint. Why pander to the whining little girls who sook about being unrecoverable? They're full of it anyway, the game isn't over just because that ship went down. It's just much, much harder. The penalty of losing the ship should (in my opinion: must) be having to start at square one, swallowing frigates to grow up and mature at some later date. Which, considering TEC Loyalists can build two starbases at a critical position and Vasari Rebels can bring theirs into fights with the fleet, isn't totally unreasonable. Come on, is this truly going to devolve into a game that shares Warcraft III's disposable leader system? Show a little backbone and fight at a disadvantage, or don't ask stupid things of the titans to avoid putting them in positions they can't get out of. Simple.
If you don't take advantage of the time it takes to rebuild a titan to level up/bolster your fleet then you aren't adapting to Rebellion. Level differences on a titan are HUGE and taking them away would still make the game who snipes the titan first wins which is pretty one dimensional and not balanced in the least.
The only way this could make any sense is Titans do not gain xp in battle, every upgrade would be in the tech tree and once you invested the money/resources in the techs, you would have the experience/techs to transfer to the next Titan.
This is Grade A Bull****.
Playing SP I've never in my life lost a Titan because they're damned hard to kill when they have a decent escort. But their incredibly strength, especially at level 10, is ridiculous if the player isn't even penalized for losing it.
I'm playing against 2 Hard AI TEC Rebels (among others). Just ONE Ragnarov Titans at level 10 can take out FIVE fully upgraded Argonev starbases if they aren't being babysat by my primary fleet. And there are TWO of the ****ers constantly coming onto the battlefield. I thought killing them would give me a reprieve, but nope... and now I've got two bearing down on my systems while my fleet is finishing off another AI player and they, alone, might have just cost me my game (not to mention 7+ starbases)
Someone explain to me how this is balanced. At all. This is the first thing really giving me the urge to stop playing this game forever to the point it's so unbalanced I'd have no problem cheating just to get them off the map.
