Title says it all. Are there any other fantasy series of the same quality?
This thread just got bookmarked
Someone mentioned Robin Hobb, and the Assasin and Tawny Man series are in my top 10 as far as favorites (didn't like the Live Ships all that much though). I only bring this up because her Soldier Son trilogy is also very good. Definitely something unique and and different.
And regardless of what someone else stated about Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, it most certainly is worth a read. It too is a very unique tale, and it's what convinced me to try Mistborn, which immediately made it into my top 10 list of all time.
I was mainly suggesting not to judge Sanderson on the basis of that book. He gets a lot better.
He can write, he is masterful at plotting... but there are things that let Elantris down: The domestics, social setting etc are 'off'. It did read like someone from Utah imagining a feudal/early modern world and not really getting it.
You wouldn't get that impression from Stormlight Archive.
I should add here that the Stormlight Archive also combines all the other series together, although it's somewhat subtile. There's a minor background subplot involving a character that keeps reappearing in every fantasy book being chased by a mysterious group of people made up of characters from his other fantasy settings. The big bad of this series is also related to the big bad of the Mistborn series.
Its better, especially since Sanderson actually writes for a living and completes his books in a reasonable amount of time. Where as George RR Martin's occupation consists of going to Nerd Cons and watching football all day long, and as a hobby he occasionally writes.
