I have played sins for a long time now. Recently I bought a pre-order and gained access to the beta.
After playing for an hour or two I quickly realised that most of the content (To my mind about 80 to 85%) is really just carry over from the last sins plus the three "micro" expansions. Apart from the inclusion of titan class vessels, the game plays out just like diplomacy. My heart sank as the realisation came to me that my beloved game's sequel was not all what I had hoped for or even expected to become.
So I have to ask myself, is this game a true sequel or just a rehash which includes some extra content?
On one hand we see the split in the races into factions, but those factions (on the surface) really represent a difference in Titans. One being aggressive, the other defensive. True there may be other technology tree research to be had, but these are really just attribute changes at heart.
In a nutshell, Split factions in sins should have much less in common with each other(like rebels having loyalist killing tech like misslile crusers, instead of frigates) than we currently see. I suppose then my real burning question is, will we see a real "fracturing" of each race, in terms of different frigates and cruisers. Or will we see what we have already seen in the BETA, an almost pointless split of each race that amounts to very little?
Rebellion needs to be a reinvention of itself. otherwise what is the point other than to make money (which it wont do if it doesn't offer any real change from its predecessor?). What would a game critic say about sins in a review? My guess would be that he would say something similar to what Ive just mentioned here.
Thanks for a taking the time to read this. Discussion is gladly welcomed.
When I was young I went to see Star Trek The Motion Picture. There I was standing in line with all my friends: the Trekkies. I didn't know any of them but we were a band of brothers on that day. Talking excitedly of what we had heard and what we wanted to see. When the movie was over (and so many people had walked out before it was over). I just sat there watching the credits roll, feeling like I had been lied to.
I feel your pain DavidBuckley: you wanted, you dreamed, you needed so much more. Don't lose heart.
This is the only game of it's kind. These guys are getting it right.
You're just out there ahead of them that's all.
The Star Trek movie guys got it right eventually. (well at least once for a few minutes)
I have been and always shall be your friend. Live long and prosper.[e digicons](\(\[/e]

Stardock's people obviously care about what their name goes on. So cheer up, you're in line with Sin-nies just like you. The popcorn is stale, the soda is over priced and the people behind you will talk all the way through the game. But it's okay because Rebellion is here...
KKKKKKKKKKKHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!
lol, CLASSIC
I love this game...I love what they did with it. The modding community for this game is pretty good, also.
You want a campaign? I dare the community to make one, complete with story. I double-dog dare you. I don't think you guys are smart enough to do it.
Hellboy here has a good point.
Lots of people want a campaign. Why haven't any experienced modders stepped to the challenge?
No way to give the player victory without conquering every single enemy planet. Though with Rebellion perhaps it would be more feasible. The story would probably have to be external and text based as we have no mechanism for displaying strings in game for specific circumstances, though Rebellion may change that too.
That said, quite a few unique custom maps are out there if you look for them, that more resemble a campaign gameplay wise if not story wise.
Should be possible though when Rebellion is released. For example with Last Flagship standing, a player would be defeated when his Flagship dies right? (Not in the Beta so I don't know exactly)
You would think that with some nosing around you might be able to apply that to other objects, for example if a certain planet is taken over. 'The planet is under our control, well done Admiral!'
Strings and stuff is too technical for me - a noob

Ah, thank you for the tip, time to head to google
Here's the last one I played, but you may want to post and ask the author if he has a better version now. He said he was going to improve it even more eventually.
So having never owned any version of the game, would I be missing anything if I skipped Trinity and only got Rebellion? As a stand alone, I know it's not required to buy previous versions. I'm thinking more about story or content. I already plan on getting Rebellion, which shows to release on 4/17/12 at best buy and 6/12/12 on Steam. If I did get Trinity, i would save $10 on the pre-order, so essentially be paying $10 for Trinity. It just seems like spending money on Trinity would be a waste if Rebellion includes all the content and story, unless there is something worth playing in it that would be overshadowed by whats in the new one.
My big question: WHY STEAM. GOD. WHY.
Rebellion includes all the content and story from vanilla Sins, Entrenchment and Diplomacy (Trinity). The only thing Rebellion will not have, unlike Trinity, is separate .exe's for every different expansion of the game. So for example you won't be able to start up just Entrenchment or vanilla Sins, but you will play with the content that came along out with Entrenchment.
I kinda agree with OP, I love the series and I'm a big fan, I don't mind it cause it's this way anyway, just annoying to think of it. When I ran the game last night and saw the same exact menu and then the same exact default start when you spawn on the map I kinda went like 0.o.. I was expecting it to be much different. Well don't get me wrong, but anyway guess it's just a few things added, changed, maybe on the long run they'll actually PATCH it(dlc as well) and not release 155 DLCS which we have to pay for.
Look at Men Of War Assault squad, it got so many updates and new content(New units, features, graphical enhanchements etc) (Few payable dlc's too, true, but it's skirmish maps, u don't need those, plus they were under 5 eur) and they're about to release a new big DLC for free (Mp based) so my point is, even though it looks like it's predecesors it can be amazing.
Don't take me as a hater, love the game.
I completely agree with this..and I have a plan. Problem is real life makes my plans stand in line while I do other plans.
Here's the link to what happened above if you're wondering.
Because it's hardcoded
that's why
Sinperium has lots of ideas
and they are all great
but hardcoded limits make all modders cry bitter tears of loathing
and reading the previous page made me laugh 'til I cried...
