I am so far played something like 4 games and overall this game seems like fun.
I like the fact the monsters no longer feel like they just randomly appeared near you and it is pretty fun exploring the world and finding places that have strong monsters guarding it.
one of the thing that seems to really destory the game for me is the AI
the AI just seems like it doesn't know how to play the game and it does quite poorly in tactical battles also when the AI declares war at me I expect him to have his men at the border ready to attack and it doesn't always do that.... sometimes it can take like 7 turns till his army is just showing up on the border.
also it seems that the AI in tatical battle won't use all of his units abilties to full effect
for example in my last game I went to kill a drake which should be really hard to do but I did it with level 6 heroes and it was mainly cause the AI won't use the fire breath abilty which is one of the most powerfull attack the Drake has(also I had a forset Drake that tank him).
I also think the AI should put a big priority on killing your spell casting heroes since the fire spells are really good and I had my sovereign cast spells on the Drake while standing right near him and he wouldn't just punch him in face and end him.
same thing also happened to me when I killed in that same game the guardian of world's end he didn't use all his power to full effect and felt to easy to beat.
the AI also seems to get his heroes killed alot as I always see them with some debuffs .
I also wonder does the AI is able to kill Drakes and build some for himself ? as I haven't seem do that
I also wonder does the AI use the spells for raise land and lower land ? as it can help get access to areas otherwise blocked and it is just seem not fair if the AI won't advantage of it.
and last thing I want to say is the I think archers should have a maxium effective range(depends on the bow) and if you try to shoot too far you get more chances you will miss the target.
so overall the game seems really fun and hope by time of it being release it will be even more fun than now.
I too found that the AI is somewhat too easy to beat even on highest difficulty level. Another thing you mentioned was the fire spells being powerful. I would say in general the whole water and fire tactical spells are too powerful, My sovereign casting blizzard with the initiative +10 attribute will be like instant cast blizzard and wipe out the whole enemy army (regardless of the gear they are wearing) if I have one water shard harvested. Same goes for the fire fireball (if I got the name right) just smaller area. One spellcasting sovereign and 1 tank hero can eliminate any AI player or AI monsters with ease. I would look back to see if you can balance the those spells. Also the AI mainly just sticks with obscuring fog as their tactical battle spell, with a chaos here and there.
Yeah the Ai are definately too easy I was playing on the one difficulty from the hardest on my very first game and they dont seem to respond well to invasion at all or even invade well. Early in the game two Ai declared war on me and they didnt even show up for ages afterwards and when they did they sent some piddly little force that became easy xp then they did it again. Then When i attacked with my full force main squad they were overwhelmed and defeated from city to city easily.
The Ai needs to realise this is WAR! war means get your biggest army and meet the enemy not piddle around with tiny squads all over the place. THe Ai needs to get its units into giant maximum armies otherwise its just going to lose every single time. Now Im not saying small forces dont have their uses for disrupting behind enemy lines or sneaking into unguarded cities and stuff but the AI just sends stuff directly at your closest city making it obvious
Btw the game is starting to shape up nicely and is looking great.
Wonder if maybe the AI isn't getting their champions leveled up and/or failing to hire higher level champions. This would explain why your not getting hit by high level spells.
In my current .86 game, I've seen the AI have more than one champion in an army. Also 3 champions together with no other units in an army. This is not how you level them up.
