Indie gaming is simply amazing. These brilliant titles just come out of nowhere.
Question: Are the system requirements higher than sins, or do the graphics suffer to compensate for the immense scale?
If they were parked in orbit they would likely use less fuel. If their power generator runs off fuel then, of course, they'll still be burning it. If the ships are constantly running for fuel then either your fuel capacitance is too low (the default AI setting tells them to refuel when they're down to 48% of max) or the percentage for fetching fuel is too high.
If they're just dying for no foreseen cause: Add a capacitor to their design. Designs with generation/usage ratios near 1:1 can suffer momentary brownouts which lead to shipwide failure. Adding a capacitor gives a background pool to draw from in those brownouts and so systems will keep running until the power generator ticks again. If all systems in a ship go offline, the only way to restart the ship (due to various catch-22s) is through Boarding Parties.
As mentioned above, keeping the speed setting low at the later parts of the game, or introducing a reasonable ship cap, will limit this bug from occurring. What happens is that in max demand situations, the component of the game responsible for calculating for every ship the amount of fuel to use, power to generate and take, and so on, can occasionally tick some systems twice before the power generator gets ticked. This means for a moment the ship's draw will increase and the power generator will go beyond capacity and, thus, systems reliant on power will shut down. Usually, that includes things like the Bridge and Crew Quarters (thus the catch 22). If the Bridge goes down, the Power Generator can't turn back on. The Generator needs Control and the Bridge needs Power and Crew, and the Crew can only survive ten seconds without the Life Support turned on.
Interesting... so right now I have this problem where maps take huge amounts of time to load. I dont think its due to my stoneage computer specs because when the map does eventually load the game runs pretty smooth. I did get this thing when I installed that said
If it's refusing to install, then it should be compatible with SR. I'm not sure why your maps are taking a long time to load. Could you tell me at what stage of map loading you're experiencing the slowdown? SR saves are not particularly large and I would imagine would load fairly quickly for most map sizes and object counts unless your CPU is struggling to process the data.
Oh... so it just isnt installing that version of the thing because I have a newer version.
Also, the slowdown happens when it loads "terrakin" and "neumon".
That's interesting. Maybe you have slow RAM/GPU? That would be loading the texture/model heavy files (the models and textures for the shipsets).
The maps load fine sometimes and then sometimes not, so thats whats strange. I also tried putting all settings on the lowest and it loaded super fast and then had a slow down at the same place.
Gameplay questions:
Where do I even start... well first of all, If I were to make a huge cargo ship to follow around my fleet for resupply how would I get haulers and/or tankers to resupply it automatically? What are haulers and/tankers intended use if their automation doesnt allow them to go beyond their current gravity well?
That's because though the textures will be reduced in scale, they're still having to be loaded into memory -- which causes the slowdown you're experiencing. It's normal for it to be a second or four for those to load as most everything else it's loading is either text-based (which loads very quickly) or procedurally generated (which is also fairly fast).
Re: Tankers -- they're for groups of travelling ships, mainly fleets.
Re: Haulers -- they're for situations in a system which has no space port, or where you've disabled the space ports for some reason. They're essentially a very slow space port substitute, but they can't draw from the galactic bank so they ship from planet to planet instead. Haulers are also useful if you're generating a lot more on your planets than you're able to export to the galactic bank; they will take what isn't being exported and distribute it to any other planets in the system which do.
That's very simple: You give it a fuel tank and tell it in its AI settings to accept things being deposited to it. Tankers are already told to deposit fuel on ships that allow it and which are low on fuel.
Is there a way to make automation orders extend beyond a gravity well?
EDIT: I guess they do?
I'm afraid not. The only orders that go beyond that scope are defend range orders and auto-colonization/scouting orders.
So, Tankers will only do this if the "super hauler" is in the same gravity well?
Is it possible to scuttle ships?
If I want further advice for playing the game, where's the best place to look?
The Star Ruler Forums.
http://forums.blind-mind.com/index.php
Or the same fleet.
LMB on the ship to be scuttled, right click on a planet you have colonized; scuttle should be an option in the context menu.
I built a 4000 scale "celestial artillery" structure, how do I get it to automatically attack everything in its range without having to build a new one?
Also, I let my bro (who I already mentioned is in another state) download the game after you said it reset. Does that mean I cannot download it further without it being reset again? I have usb storage so it isnt a pressing matter that it be reset again (if it even needs to be reset again).
It is likely that would trip the password block, yes, as warned it might. If it is as such, then yes we would have to reset the password for you again if you needed to redownload it.
To your other question: Ships cannot "see" outside their current gravity well, but you can. If a target is within their firing range and the weapon is ready and the target was declared: The weapon will fire. So: No automatic firing of weapons between systems, but as long as you have the range you can manually specify any target with your extreme long range arty.
Does it need to be done through you every time (I dont plan on having it reset frequently) or can it be done through regular BMTmicro staff if I cant get into contact with you?
There is this option though under AI settings in the blueprint that sets the engagement range beyond the gravity well, and even lets you set the engagement so that its "galaxy" sized. In this case I would imagine that my celestial artillery would be able to attack anything it sees automatically. If this is true however, how does this newly set AI apply to already existing celestial artillery?
Also, the game is awesome. The only thing I have to complain about is the lack of art, which is of course completely understandable given its indie budget. Its not even so much that, the thing that bothers me more is that large scale ships look the same as a similar fitted much smaller ship. I've an idea on how you can fix this problem without having to do too much work: Work a code that, as the scale of a ship increases, causes certain traits to appear on the ship. The ship could grow more proportionally (and specifically) vertical, horizontal, or length-wise, or it could have more and more and larger "bumps" on it, bumps being control towers or shield generator emitters or other. Did you already have a similar idea going?
I would not expect the same pity we showed from BMT Micro, given the reason for the lockouts. I do not believe my boss would look kindly on resetting your password either as you appear to have ignored our request to tighten your control on the download link. Further, we do not provide technical support of that nature to those we suspect may be engaged in piracy of our product on any scale. In sum: I would take great pains to ensure I did not need to attempt another download of the game but it isn't impossible to get another copy of it as long as you can provide hard evidence you were not at fault for any given lock-out.
That said: If you still need to off-site your copy of SR so that you can grab it after your format, I would recommend any of the myriad file sharing services available on the web.
I'm afraid you misunderstand the setting's purpose. If a ship is assigned to engage the galaxy then, if it is not performing any critical action, if a system comes under attack within its engagement range, it will move to that system. However, until it reaches that system it will still be unable to see anything within it and, as such, its weapons will not fire even if they would normally be able to if it could see the opposing ships.
So: As said before, firing between systems or into regions that ships do not currently have visibility to, is a manual-fire only option.
No. The game would not have supported that idea as written; further, we're already working on our next project and that's far too large a feature to squeeze into the upcoming, probably final, patch for the game. You could, however, still achieve a facsimile of that idea with enough models and enough time in the model configuration file.
I hope I dont come off as a jerk as you read this, but here it is:
But I do have full control over it. Also wiped the computer recently so no malware. Also, dont think it was the malware that caused the problem; think it was when my brother tried to download it. Didnt we already talk about this?
Dude, come on. I bought the damn game. You can look up the transaction too. Im no pirate. I just wanted to be able to play it with my brother. My brother would never have bought the game anyways as he says he doesnt like such games because they are too time consuming. I used this opportunity with you so that I could get him a copy, as I dont think he would have ever bought it, whereas now he has the full game and maybe it will grow on him and if you make a sequel he will then be influenced to buy that future product where otherwise he wouldnt have. I hope you dont imply you are annoyed with me or think that Im being unappreciative. I appreciate your resetting the password for me of course, as I realize it wasnt necessarily your responsibility to do so.
Furthermore, I dont really need the password reset. I got the game on my USB and my newly reset computer and its unlikely that they would both be lost and/or destroyed simultaneously. If it isnt inconvenient for you to get someone to reset it that would be a convenience for me though.
Do you know a trustworthy site and torrent downloader then, because Im pretty sure there's no way around the malware that [usually] resides in both things.
I assume you made it that way because of balance issues? Maybe it could be a toggleable option for casual players like me that want it automatic and professional players that think it breaks the game. Maybe you could set a limit for it where it does auto target but very inefficiently, say for example it only auto targets at a rate of 10 times its reload time.
Thats awesome. Might I ask what that might be? Is it a sequel?
Umm......yes even pirating for the purposes of your brother does in fact make you a.......pirate. So what if your brother "never would have bought the game anyway".......guess what he's still not buying it. Oh wait......IF it grows on him.....and IF the DEV makes a sequel (unlikely if many more people just wanted to play with their brothers and only bought 1 out of 2 copies...... ) then MAYBE your brother might buy it? What the hell kind of bullshit justification for piracy is that?!?!
I mean seriously? I thought in all of my years on this earth and having raised 3 children that I had seen/heard it all.............how wrong I was.......
It's actually simpler than that: It's because of performance issues. If every ship was looking at every ship in the galaxy, calculating their distance from them versus their weapon's range, and so forth all the time, well, I'm sure you could see the problem with that.
It's still too early to release news concerning it, I'm afraid. The best place to look for new news on it would be our forums/website of course as it will be posted there before it is posted elsewhere.
But I do have full control over it.
when my brother tried to download it.
You claim that you have full control over your URL but in the same breath state you freely gave it to your brother. Not only that, but you imply it was your brother's fault for downloading it; not your fault for providing him the means. Last, you provide no elaboration on why you have more control now than before. When after essentially admitting that before, you cautiously asked if it would be a problem if we could reset it again. At this point you have forced our stance to move from 'one time exception' to 'possible repeat offender'.
Dude, come on. I bought the damn game.
This is true.
Im no pirate.
This is neither true or false. I can neither prove nor disprove it but the chances that you may be a pirate escalate if you have facilitated another.
I used this opportunity with you so that I could get him a copy, as I dont think he would have ever bought it, whereas now he has the full game and maybe it will grow on him and if you make a sequel he will then be influenced to buy that future product where otherwise he wouldnt have.
This is a justification based upon a supposition; the supposition being empirically unprovable and thus false. Therefore, the justification is likewise false. Allow me to posit my own suppositions:
(1) How do I know you're not going to give a copy to everyone you suspect may not like the game? Where does the rabbit hole end? We can't possibly know and you can't possibly prove where it does; so we have to assume the worst case.
(2) Further, since you do not express remorse and instead provide justifications, this tells me you are likely to have no ethical dilemma facilitating another copy to yet another person. Even though you present your aim as altruistic (and it may or may not be) and harmless, the information above points strongly in the direction that, if we did reset your password, you would be likely to do what you've already done some more -- and potentially in a less altruistic manner as you would have nothing to lose (as you appear to hold no value to it).
I'm certainly not stating you've cost us any money, as we can't know whether you have, but you did facilitate piracy, and your word selection ("my brother tried", "I used this opportunity", "torrent downloader") places you in the position of being a compromised source of information; that you may be a pirate without means or simply in disguise for the moment. If we provided those means, assuming that either of those statements were true, we would facilitate piracy of our own product.
Therein lies our dilemma: If we do further aid you, you may abuse our aid; if we do not further aid you, we may punish you unjustly. Thus the only solution we would choose in deference to you being a customer was the one we did: If you further facilitate piracy of the product we will be under no pressure to aid you as you have proved you are a repeat offender. If you do not further facilitate piracy of the product (as you state you have cleaned 'malware's from your machine that you claim may have been responsible; which I find suspect and unlikely) then you are unlikely to encounter further issues.
Requiring that you stay in that area to download another copy I find a fitting preventative measure and punishment with plenty of arm room and time for you to ensure you have your copy of the game should you be leaving to elsewhere. Thus, we are satisfied that with this approach we have both attacked the problem and provided the support you are due by the money you paid.
Nearly all legal and reputable filehosting services? Filesmelt, for instance. I can't say I've encountered any malware from a file hosting site outside of checking Star Ruler out on The Pirate Bay and other (more typically illegally-used) such sites; not to imply you're a pirate and would therefore draw your information from your experience of such sites, of course.
Not unappreciative, either unaware of the ramifications of your actions on your status as our customer or subversively malicious and attempting to abuse our trust. I'd also like to point out that "I hope you dont imply you are annoyed with me" is more of a casually presented prediction than what you most likely meant: "I hope this doesn't mean you're annoyed at me." Or an attempt at emotional manipulation.
In response to that: Certainly, we are annoyed. However, I would also like this topic to move forward: past discussion of what may or may not be.
This argument is no longer about whether or not you should reset my password, as Im sure (what with your "boss" and whatnot) that even if you wanted to you could not.
If you need clarification on any of the claims I have made you may reference this thread in which we discussed my first password reset: https://forums.stardock.com/417958
As am I.
Im sorry Firgof, but you cant expect a person to not linger on a topic when you simultaneously type out a whole page concerning the topic you DONT want to linger on.
Im a bit confused... so the very first time I asked the password to be reset was an "offense"? I was under the impression you were ok with me distributing a copy to my brother. This misconception of mine stems from the fact that I have hid nothing from you, told you everything, and you basically knowingly (as I cant see how you could have possibly NOT known seeing as I have HID NOTHING) helped me to distribute a copy to my brother.
It is a FACT that my brother would NEVER have purchased the game. When he saw it on youtube he told me so and that it was "boring" and "just like sins" and etc. It is not a "supposition".
Well with this "pirate witchhunt" mentality, why did you all choose to make a DRM-free version of the game available in the first place? By not attaching DRM to your game in the first place youve basically made everyone a potential pirate because people can just put it on their trusty USB and give it to their friend. I only asked for the password to be reset for the sake of convenience. I have ALWAYS been a POTENTIAL pirate.
Why would I be sorry? If I should have ever expressed "remorse" it would have been because you warned me or something. Only now am I hearing that I supposedly wasnt supposed to distribute a copy to my brother (which you knowingly helped me do) and that Im some sort of pirate.
The url from which the game is downloaded from is secure. If you can even consider my brother a profit loss (which as I have stated he is not) then you know for a fact youve only lost one through me. Other than that however, the fault lies with you people for not putting DRM on your game, as everyone (not just me) is a potential pirate because of that decision. Dont misunderstand however; Im not implying that you should put DRM on your future. In my opinion you lose more than you gain through DRM.
Well, if were going to call it piracy anyways: You are also guilty of this, because as Ive said you knowingly helped me to distribute a copy to my brother.
I understand your meaning in saying I could possibly be in disguise, but what do you mean my "word selection"? Ill try to guess your meaning in each of the "selections" youve given:
"My brother tried": I really just dont get this one.
"I used this opportunity": I suppose you mean to say that this statement of mine is essentially me confessing I was a pirate in disguise and that I "took the opportunity" to "use" you to my own ends? Thats kind of a stretch.
"Torrent downloader": Seeing as you mentioned "filesharing websites" (all of which require torrent downloaders) in the first place, this is a bit hypocritical. Yes, there are filesharing websites out there that are perfectly legal and are used for smaller files and freeware and demos and patches of all kinds, but any website that lets you download say for example Star Ruler requires you to use a torrent downloader if Im not mistaken.
So youre telling me that I can download star ruler from this "filesmelt" and that doing so is somehow more "legal" than downloading it from ANYWHERE ELSE?
What with "emotional manipulation" and your other claims... whatever. I thought to be polite because you treated me with the same respect (in the past anyways). Of course, if you think I am some sort of "pirate sleeper cell" then there's obviously no way to convince you otherwise as you seem to have been quite capable of convincing yourself of the contrary.
Now, seeing as I have responded to your wall of text with a bigger wall of text Ive no doubt your less than pleased. Hopefully we can overcome this silly argument (either through arguing about it and/or coming to an agreement) and get back to talking about the game because there is alot that I do not know.
you guys realize bionic is 18 and still lives at home? why waste your time...he obviously has lots.
