Has anyone found a good way to tell where a city can be placed (ie. how much grain/materials can be produced) without creating a settler and walking over?
With the visual cues being completely random, I really don't have any way to know what to expect from anywhere. A fertile looking area may produce no grain, and desolation could be rife with the stuff.
There's a little button on the top right of the map on a little floating menu (where it tells you the terrain type); click the button there in order to be able to see the actual grain and materials rating of the land around you
With your Champion--only at the beginning, initial placement of your 1st city--OR with your Pioneer, do a 'mouseover' over the "Settle" button and it will highlight available tiles to settle on with the amount of Grain/Materials produced for that particular tile. Usually once I create a Pioneer, I mouseover 'Settle' and look for places I explored and take note of where the prime tiles are located. At least that's how I did it before noticing the button at the top right You can click it on to say: 'Show Tile Yields On Map'
Any land that is either grassland or the dark fallen land should be possible to settle in, unless there's already a city within 6-7-8 tiles or so.
