Was thinking, what if you could build a defense device that, on demand, could reduce the size of your planetary grav well?
Implications for planets would be that they would be easier to defend because of the reduced grave well size thus forcing fleets to have to engage at least some of the defenses vice run in circles around them.
I am undecided if it should be a limited time effect, or it should remain in effect for the duration of it being turned on at the will of the player....or even if this would be a valuable structure.
I would want it to be near the end of the tech tree because I could see situations where it could be very powerful.

I really don't see where PJI wouldn't be better than this in every way. And its probably a lot of computing power for almost no gain IMO.
plus, ships can fly out of the gravity well (how else do you keep your cariers away form the pirate turrets), just not that far. they need to be close to the circle to jump out, a buffer zone. Haven't you seen ships fly back just to turn then jump?
if anything you'd use an ability like this to halt an opponent jumping out. to make them return to the buffer area and getting caught by your defences as they try and run

There's an old sciecne fiction novel back in the 60's that had ships with an "exponential field". When flipped on, it expanded or shrank space so their weapons could be brought instantly to bear from extreme ranges or space could expand to move them out of enemy range. over time, the quantum state of the ships was put out of true from the distortions and the computers would begin to calculate incorrectly making the ships worthless.
