This link is to the review by redlettermedia. I cannot insert it as a youtube video because then it overwrites the below one for some reason.
I agreed on some of the parts regarding plot holes and retcons (those are my pet peeves), but I believe the majority of the view is biased movie snobbage, particularly the comments about lack of characterization and emotion, and the idea that CGI destroyed the novelty and believability of Star Wars.
For example the guy says that obi wan didnt get mad enough or something, and the "boring" beautifully choreographed lightsaber battles were diminished from emotion and interest. I think there was just as much emotion in the battle against Maul as any other in the series. When Qui-Gon died, I cared for the character and so felt for him. When Obi-Wan said "NOOOO", I felt his rage as he barrelled out of the hallway in an explosive flurry.
Im not going to be wasting my time defending the prequels when someone has already done it for me:
Dont ask me where part one is. I have no idea.
I was pretty surprised when I heard all the hate against Star Wars prequels. I wonder how many other people will be when they see this.
Where have you been the last decade? They got hate since before they were made.
Earth.
Anyways, if so many people hated Star Wars I dont know how I missed it.
Not Star Wars, just the prequels. It has the problem all sudden remakes years later tend to have, everyone thinks they know what Star Wars is, and don't like it when the official version disagrees with theirs. They want the same old thing repackaged as something new. That was not what the prequels are.
Meant that.
Exactly.
What really killed the SW prequels for me was Anakin becoming Vader mostly because he acted like 12 year old on the internet who couldn't find any rational reason behind his actions and statements, so he started to throw tantrums, threats and called everyone a Nazi... then he killed a bunch of kids for the fun of it.
I could stomach JarJar, I could stand little Any, I could overlook the plotholes, but making that wuss Vader was just painful. That retroactively poisoned the prequels for me, to the point where all I feel for them is apathy.
Just watch Harry Plinkett's in-depth reviews of Episode I to III:

Ive already provided the same link, as well as a counter link.
The biggest problem I had with Clones and Revenge was Hayden Christensen's performance. I've not seen any of his other work, and maybe he's fine in more contemporary settings, but he seemed completely out of his element. I don't know if the problem was Lucas' direction of him, or George's ability to write really terrible dialogue, but I can't think Hayden deserves all the blame. In action sequences where it's obviously him and not a stunt double he's fine, but many of the emotion heavy scenes (especially those with Padme) seemed really stilted and unconvincing.
I suppose I agree with that, but I have yet to rewatch it as it has been a while.
Yes, I think George should have had some more help with the love story part. I think he's fine in his angry scenes though. Its only natural that the naive anger of youth give way to cold, mechanical hatred once those dreams are crushed for good, so in theory it could have worked.
Seen those video's before. It's all just one persons opinion (though i agree with him about the prequel trilogy)...he did some LOTR ones as well, and in that i think he was full of shit.George Lucas should never have scripted the prequels. Donfiled hits the nail on the head here. Look at the classic trilogy, story by Lucas but not the script, and those movies have some wicked dialouge, clearly one of the features of the classic trilogy. Hand in hand with that, Lucas's direction....Ill give some credit to Geroge for his direction of ANH, but he had the help of Francis Ford Coppola there, but he was wise to allow, Irvin Kershner to handle ESB, and Richard Marquand to do ROTJ. (though Speilberg was said to have had some input in the direction of ROTJ). But why o why he thought he could direct the prequels is beyond me, in the direction alone the movies fail, and it's there Hayden needed help the most. Just imagine Hayden in Revenge of the Sith with Kershner directing him.....
It's on the story of Padme and Anakin where the prequels fail the most, not that it's their only failure. The prequels looked good, and we were all happy, warm and fuzzy when they came out, but after the dust has settled we are left with drivel...shiny pretty looking drivel, but drivel nonetheless. If the prequels were not directed by Lucas and not scripted by Lucas, they may have been digestible, but we still would have been left with 3 movies geared toward selling merchandise rather then telling a wonderful tale.Oh and to the OP, seriously dude, what prequels you been watching to not see the hate. The line "Qui Gon sir...what are midichlorins?" should have been enough right there to let ya know something was very, very wrong, let alone Jar Jar.I'm thankful for one thing the prequels did deliver..John Williams' Duel of the Fates. That music and entire fight sequence is the one reason why i would ever watch Phantom Menace again....
Wait...I'm confused Bionic. Is this a post where you actually like something!?
Just had to quote this post in its entirety. Neilo......now that is how one hits a nail on the head!
Clarify.
The concept of midichlorians isnt so bad. In fact, it explains why some of the most iconic star wars character ended up dying. Obi Wan, Qui-Gon, arguably some of the wisest of Star Wars series ended up dying despite their wisdom and connection to the force. If midichlorians didnt exist, and ones powers in the force were only weighed on their wisdom and spiritual connection to the force... well the sith would never win.
As for Jar Jar... thats hardly a reason to dismiss all of the prequels. Sure hes annoying, which is why, to alleviate that element for the audience hes given a thrashing at times like when Qui-Gon grabs his tongue. Either way, really not a big deal.
Same here. That duel is pretty much what defined the whole movie. Its what I remember it most for.
Also, as I said, my pet peeve is plot holes. In Episode 3, why does Yoda run away? He doesnt necessarily lose the battle. He isnt seriously injured or anything. If I had been Yoda, Id have fought with Sideous to the death. The only thing that could explain his actions is if he somehow foresaw that he would one day train luke and that fighting sideous would only lead to his death.
Also, Ive heard about how ridiculously powerful sideous supposedly was, so how then was he so easily killed?
These new Star Wars films are the biggest disappointments in film history in my opinion. Cant believe that this is still being discussed. Try telling a girl you just slain a village and then date her
I actually like the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy fairly equally.
The prequel trilogy was fine, simply because it didn't completely disrespect the established Expanded Universe (EU), like the abomination that is TCW (The Clone Wars CGI cartoon), which I flatly refuse to take seriously. TCW contradicts the existing EU so much, that I basically disregard the events as canon, and only accept the believable things like new ships and vehicles as canon. Ahsako Tano is more of a whining brat that Hayden Christensen ever was as Anakin Skywalker. Then there is the post-Galactic Civil War era, which consists of the New Jedi Order era and beyond. The New Jedi Order era was decent, though I am so mad that they wasted the character of Anakin Solo. Things start going downhill real fast after that.
You aren't the only one who is confused.
In Star Wars, we have R2D2 and C3PO for comic relief. Iconic figures, worth fortunes on their own.
In Phantom Menace, we have Jar Jar Fucking Binks pissing us off to no end as a badly done comic relief that just comes across as irritating. The comparison can end there and be an eternal disappointment.
Sadly, it doesn't, and none of the comparisons get better. Vader is an annoying little shit in his youth, Obi Wan isn't much better, and Yoda sends the entire theater rolling as he spins through the air in absurdity seconds after dropping his fucking crutch. We then culminate our travesty with the Jedi being exterminated, not by Vader, but by fucking clone troopers and over sized bugs. They go from single Jedi being an army unto themselves, to assraped in force by the mere peons they'd have slaughtered by the hundreds a movie back.
They make me want to kill puppies, they're not sacrilegious like his god forsaken character edit for Han Solo in the first movie, but they're in no way equals to their predecessors, let alone the superior products they should have been with decades of CGI advancement to work from.
Haters are going to hate.
Perhaps they would feel better watching Twilight or something.
psychoak ....yer takin' it too seriously.
ALL of Starwars is simple product-placement opportunities for Lucas's Toy industry.
There IS NO STORY or actual value in any of the series.
It's the junk-bin of S/F.
Yeah - I was just about to post this as well. You really need to watch a few of these. Think the video posted in the OP, only much better.
You are spot on Jafo!
This is how I feel about the whole Star Wars thing.
Hey now! What are your favorite fictions, so I can make fun of those?
Yep, exactly what it is. I enjoy the action, fancy ships, and (mostly) fun video games, but after that I don't expect much from it. The prequels could have been a lot better. But I have seen a lot worse as well. I enjoyed the movies personally but can understand why others didn't.
I will chime in and concur that the prequels sucked, but the worst was Episode I. An obvious attempt to reel in 12-year-olds. Then it gradually got better in II and III, but never did it hold a candle to the original. The so-called "love affair" between Amidala and Anakin was less than believable at best. The light sabres reflecting back lasers at their shooter was cheesy. The battles have everyone out in the wide open shooting each other--I mean, are those laser pistols musket loading or something? And then you'll have this big, climactic battle with the clones, lots of the good guys die, and...oh, it doesn't matter. Someone else found this secret code to render all the clones inoperational while you were busy fighting.
