I know there's some Dominions 3 fans here, so I figured I'd let everyone know that Illwinter has started taking pre-orders for Conquest of Elysium 3.

It's a good time for us fantasy TBS fans.
A DEMO version of Illwinters new game, Conquest of Elysium 3, is now available at Desura.comhttp://www.desura.com/games/conquest-of-elysium-3Purchase price for the full game is $30
Why don't you try your hand at Battle for Wesnoth, Gandalf? Seems to have everything you like: very indy, KISS, deep gameplay, SP-capable AI, but particularly extremely moddable map- and campaign scripting, and it's FREE and playable on Linux. Isn't that your cup of tea?
OK now this game is available on Steam. Presently Steam and GamersGate are carrying it on sale for $9
only odd thing is the prices..
steam pops it at just under £7 original price 1st day with 10% sale going.
whilst desura and gamersgate still had it for around 15 or 20 or some such.
then desura/gamersgate dropped the price with a sale (keeping original price up there).. seem to be a load of miscommunications somewhere..
best tip i picked up online... right click and hold at a recruitment tile (city and what not) to recruit right there... heck... i didn't even know about the right clicking centres in recruitment screen to sort of centre on that building... until i did it by error. but that one is fairly useless. i was beginning to wonder.. you have 10 identical iron mines.. how the heck do you know what is what?
They dont have to agree on the price. They are different publishers.
And so far, it seems that the whole things is an experiment in "lets try it the way the players complained about with the Dom3 prices". We will have to see if it wins.
um.. thing is... if you agree a substantively lower list price for 1 publisher, and the others don't know about it, they'll think you are screwing them. especially if they are smaller.
as you can see, they all have similar (lower) list price now.
After playing for some time, the game has turned to be a disappointment for me. The game design is very obsolete (I am not talking about the graphics which is horrible, but Dwarf Fortress has also horrible presentation), constantly spawned weak mobs like "two deer", or "three rabbits" are rampaging through your settlements, the combat is bad, because since all the defenders get to strike first, always, it's hugely unfair, your "empire" that can produce 5 blokes with pointed sticks every two years is ridiculous. The AI, on top of that all, is dumb. Not recommended.
Good idea
Yet after, after Dom 3 ... Wesnoth is deeply lacking. Having played both intensely, I'd have to say Wesnoth is relatively easy to play, easy to figure out, somewhat lacking in depth, and in many ways, simply brain dead. I just don't really play it anymore, my son does, but I think it has played out for me. OTOH, Dominions 3 is so intensely rich that once the balance is evened out (either by various mods or by simply discarding the "weaker" factions) it is a challenge with no peers. And a further step up is the MP games. Once you have sort of figured out the SP version, MP takes it to an entirely new level. Dozens of races, infinite variety in Gods, hundreds of units, and spells, and magic items and weapons all sorts of variety. There is no "right" way to beat the game. It is, as with real life, entirely situational. This coupled with a game structure where anything is possible, anything, makes for a massively rewarding challenge. Wesnoth was mastered in an hour. I still don't know if I've mastered Dom 3. As with Wesnoth, highly modifiable.
