im in the process of building maps based off of David Webers Honorverse and Shiva Option books. is anyone else potentialy interested in this? anything you would specificaly like to see? has anyone tried this before?
thanks for any replys, tips, and/or answers
I'm not sure if it was you but I believe a couple of people here have mentioned being into it.
I am a big fan of the HH series. Depending on how you decide to make your maps there have been a few attempts (multiple star map / single star with multiple 'systems'). I have some map work laid out (as far as star systems and their internal planets etc) but with Rebellion close and the inherent 'unfriendly-ness' of GalaxyForge I am waiting to work on them. My big problem is simply a lack of time.
Here is a thread you should read through, especially some of the points highlighted in my posts.

NOTE:
A Honor Harrington Mod will get shut down.
However, a Honor Harrington Map, we'll likely be left alone and should be good to create one.
Oh yeah--Boshimi IS one of the ones. Lol--now I remember.
I should clarify that the maps I have stopped production on until Rebellion have been the full scale (140+ Stars) Honorverse Maps.
Smaller maps based on the confrontations such as the Silesian Confederacy among others would be a request of mine. The question that can unavoidably plague an Honeverse map is when someone says, "Well in the books they went here and then there to end up here". You add one, then two, then three stars and before long, you're at the whole map.
I honestly think that a Silesian Confederacy map (excluding the Andermani planets) would be a very good self contained theatre to wage SoaSE war in.
If you are thinking of going the 'many stars with attached systems' route, I highly recomend using my Multiple Stars Graphics Mod (MSGM) to eliminate the 'white blobs of death' scenario that happens with many stars on a map when zoomed out.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know. Sinperium and I (in that order) are fairly well versed in what can be done as well as realized with Galaxy Forge (even if it is a limited program!).
Okie. I am tearing my Wolfpack map apart right now due to the "random faction" bug. Even if you delete player slots and worlds in the galaxy map it still occurs. Just crammed for time at the moment.
Boshimi, it should be possible to do a smaller-ish map with just the notable star systems: Haven, Manticore A/B, Grayson, Lovat, Trevor's Star, and Basilisk. You would have to use the Distant Stars GF though to represent the proper planet types, especially the toxic waste dump that is Grayson.
^ While this is true Sparda, much of the pure 'strategic' value gets lost unless you give a reason for a player to bypass certain systems, hold certain systems, and a means to one, either, or both. Many of the 'very prominent' systems simply are either too far apart or too clumped together. Thus, you start adding back in some of the significant though not as well known systems and before too long for balance's sake (at least for me), it snowballs. That is why I suggested the Silesian arena as a first starting point.
I'm not saying it can't be done, just that for my personal taste and time restrictions I would prefer to create the whole universe outright. With an upgraded Galaxy Forge in the works for Rebellion, I am waiting eagerly for it.
I hope you know what you're doing. I'd love to see what you could pull off with Rebellion's Galaxy Forge. A word of warning though: you should try to stick to just Haven and Manticore, unless of course you're following the timeline in which case you'll need the entire Solarian League as well.
Currently I've been able to get every single star (based on compiled known star charts) into my main map. I've also been able to get starting player locations setup (8-9 in total) with 1-5 planet bodies in each 'non-home' star system (randomly set) as required. Where there is planetary information from the book series that of course has overridden the 1-5 rule.
So, it is possible, it works, but with Galaxy Forge being limited and unstable at such large map quantities I have decided to wait.
As I stated before however, I would love to see a Silesian Confederacy map centered around star systems. Be sure to play with the initial star separation (before playing with 'scale') in Galaxy Forge and see how it looks in game. Zoom levels can be an issue sometimes depending on how the map is structured.
Boshimi, i love your ideas. what i was going to attempt in a full scale HH map would be to hash out the star maps, and then to stimulate hyperspace travel, i would have warp lanes going from one planet, to ALL of the other planets. the planets ofc, representing an entire system, simply to keep the planet/star count within reasonable levels. i was also going to create maps based off of certain campaigns, such as the Silesian confed. you mentioned, going into more detail of course. i was actually going to start with a Talbott Cluster campaign, seeing as that's one of my favorites. Especially the part where Josef Byng ate a large amount of animal excrement. As for waiting for Rebellion to pop out. I think i may take a swing at putting together a Talbott cluster map, and if it goes well ill put together a Silesian map for you.
Just keep in mind that there is a rough phase lane limit of about 1000 lanes I believe. After that it just starts eating them in game.
Sinperium, can you correct me on this?
I can't correct you as I haven't heard a definitive answer on this. The official limit (which you can exceed if you choose) is 140 planets. For lanes I don't know if there is a specified max.
My "big map" problem that you're aware of is due to having worlds and lanes with only a chance of spawning. It's a bug. The player slot issue I am not 100% sure yet of the problem but believe it is due to template conditions. It might also be caused or aggravated by the map size.
Would be nice to know all these things. Harp0, Zombie or a developer about?
the worst issue I have had in maps is with a player's starting planet/star and paths from the start planet to the star.
in some of my personal maps I have had a very long path to the star of 100% links with shortcut links of lower chance spawns eg 30%, but for playability it is needed for each player to be able to get to it's home star, as far as planet/link limits I have had over 400 planets in 20+ stars,(but it was a BITCH and slow as hell to make) with the average of 2+ links to the planets and te stars on average having 3+ links so that gives a count of 800+ + 60+ or about 800-900 links.
the ONLY planetary body that DOES have a link limit is with the wormholes on wormlinks of TWO wormlinks to the wormhole, more than two wormlinks CAUSE a DROPPING of random wormlinks to get back to the limit(actual observation in some of my personal maps).
harpo
Good info--your mileage on maps really depends on a combination of factors--one of which is Galaxy Forge saves or even running them in the game itself can occasionally break them.
wondering if its possible for the rebellion map creator to have an option to allow warping to all planets/stars regardless of phase lanes, but the warp goes much slower. or something similar to that?
You'd have to mod a little bit Scorpion but all you have to do is add "TRUE to "is Wormhole". Unfortunately the game will only allow one active outgoing wormhole lane per wormhole.
So your planets would not all be connected.
