Well...after a week of updating, registering and reinstalling various things and the like I actually got XSI to work yesterday.
For a brief shining moment I actually used it and even rendered a couple of models that I was able to successfully convert to mesh (which is also ironic as the mesh conversion has always crashed before)--though it was invisible in the game.
This lasted all of twenty minutes and then after the program was shut down and later restarted--back to a stack-hash error which no amount of tweaking, repairing and configuring now seems to be able to fix.
I've run versions 6-7.5 to no avail and it's obviously a compatibility issue with Windows 7 and some arcane combination of update files, vb issues or some other deep nonsense.
I've disconnected from the internet, stopped the firewall and antivirus, run in safe mode, run in compatibility mode, as administrator, prayed and restarted, reinstalled--etc., etc.
This dog just doesn't hunt on my machine--other than doing a full reinstall of the OS and trying from scratch (can't do that).
Just darn annoying bunch of carp. Curse those fish! A lot of carpy stuff for three stinking models...Hulk smash now.
So I was able to successfully mesh a small model Lavo converted to XSI for me and get it to display in game. The ones I converted to XSI and ran did not display as models in the game.
I'm not sure why all of the sudden now the XSI converter works but go figure. It actually began when I used Milkshape's xsi exporter and tried to convert one of those to mesh. The mesh resizer still crashes miserably on launch.
I knew I should have taken a screenshot of the model in it--sigh--at least then I'd have had pictures.
Awww. You poor poor boy.. I will sent you my Ex, she will turn you from green to pale white (like dead) in no time.
Ships are never invisible, you just figured out how to make a cloaked ship. Just like when I burn the chicken, I just became a Cajun chef.
I can cook Cajun. Please, keep the ex...and if she was Cajun too...I know exactly what you mean. Don't mess with Cajun ladies.
It's obvious it can't find the textures. Lol--maybe I should just make an invisible monster.
It would have been nice to be able to consider tweaking models over time. Maybe when I can get my XP machine back I'll try there.
FYI, I'm sending the correct model up in a sec to ya.
Here is the link to the "Egg" which is actually the right model.
It's corrected now--my bad. Glad you wanted to peek at it.
So where exactly is the problem? Do you get weird feedback from convertxsi.exe? Or you get errors trying to run XSI itself? Have you tried running runonce.bat to fix XSI? What version of Win7 are you running? Tried compatibility mode?
I rin Win7 Ultimate, and the only version of XSI which exports the ,xsi format correctly for the convertxsi.exe is 6.01
I *work* with the latest version of Softimage, but have to use the old one for export.
IMO, if the model doesn't show up ingame, it's a convertxsi.exe error. If it just couldn't find textures, then it would look completely black or white ingame, not invisible.
I am guessing that the model was not invisible, just microscopic in scale lol. How big is it supposed to be? Nano Virus?
@MyFist0
Lol--I have no idea how to proportionally size them as I have never been able to open a "native" model and hence have no comparison.
I imagine they are teeeny weeny as when I tried to zoom in on them they vibrated and shook loike the game was trying. Who knew?
@ Manshooter
I have 6.0, 6.1, 7.5 and all of them get the same issue. I have Windows 7 Home Premium unfortunately on this machine and I did runonce and that's how I managed to get it to cough to a start one time.
MyFist0's analysis of microscopic models is probably correct. I didn't get back surfaces or any mesh errors reported. Miraculously, the XSI converter seems to work now (do the math on that one--no clue).
The Yggdrasil are an inter-dimensional virus so...hee hee. FYI--the Yggdrasil main model is around the same size as the Transcensia starbase--will fit right over it pretty smoothly actually (at least that's the plan--I thought I'd use the Transcencia's shield mesh for it).
You proportionally size them by making a simple object, for example a sphere or a box, then keep resizing and exporting (make sure you freeze all transformations in XSI before exporting) it into game until you get it roughly the same size as as a frigate.
Then, with each new model you make, you size it up against that box or sphere or already resized models. If you want a frigate size object, make it the same as the box. If larger, make it bigger, etc. That way you only have the hassle of sizing up the basic reference object once.
A good practice is to also keep a separate scene in XSI with all your ships resized next to each other - that way you can easily make them proportional and you can easily look up the transformation data in case you need it in the future.
As for convertxsi, if it has problems with converting your model, one of the most common ones is that it spits out a mesh with a bounding radius of 0, so if that happens you know where the issue is. But since you can see your object ingame, just very small, I'd say you need to look at the actual size of the model you are trying to import.
This assumes I can use XSI. Otherwise it's a great theory!
Ok--now I have it running in safe mode (which it wouldn't before--and not that I'm logging in on safe mode every time either). It says there was a problem with HW Audio and its routing around it. Then I am in.
What the heck is HW audio and why is it crashing my PC?
Sir, I don't know where your computer learned to communicate, but it has the most peculiar dialect.
HW Audio is one of those Autodesk cine things that attaches audio files to particles and models--I'm pretty sure it's coming was prophesied in the ancient scriptures.
My computer does talk to me--we converse often.
What a bunch of carp! Too bad it's being so carpy!
Filthy, stinking carp!
Odds are it's a sound driver of some sort.
On a related note I tried to run Softimage on my netbook. Appearently Softimage needs a minimum resolution of 1280x1020 or something like that to run, or so it claims. There go my plans to rig models during my breaks.
I used the bounding radius from the text mesh. Planets bounding radius in the txt mesh was 4999 so I opened xsi and made a sphere set the size to 4999 and low and behold, myfist0 had created the earth and it only took 3 mins.
It might be silly to ask this, but have you tried running XSI as administrator? (Right click > Run as admin). For reasons that are unclear to me, when I try to run XSI normally it crashes, but when I run as admin eveything works great.
How long has vista and win 7 been out? You guys are just NOW figuring out the run as admin crap... I mean carp.
Not true, I'm using 7.5 all the time. I just am not allowed to press update when it asks me, just cancel it. Using Win7 64bit pro. For the SOTYR mod.
Confirming; I'm on Win7 64-bit Ultimate edition and run 7.5 just fine. Everything I've rigged has been done in 7.5 without issue.
I have:
The HW Audio is a sound attached to a model or particle effect editable in Softimage that is usable in some high end game-movie software. There may be other files trying to load too causing the problem including the Netview process seems also to be a possible issue for me on loading.
My issue is reported in various places on Autodesk and other forums with no solutions offered other than the ones I have tried. The only Autodesk "final" fixes for it I have seen have been for paying users to make a service support call.
In safe mode, whatever processes kick it out of whack don't happen in the same sequence (or at all).
I just uninstalled Softimage and hand cleaned out my registry and am going to see if installing Softimage 7.5 in safe mode gets me to a better place with this.
Finally--thanks for the help, interest or humor of all involved. Carpity-carp-carp!
Just an update:
Well--I am at the point of diminishing returns on this with my current Win 7 machine.
On installing in safe mode, several processes were unable to load fully but it ran. One of the things I noticed was that the Netview window didn't open. I was prompted in safe mode (with networking) to install updates and I did--which caused the Netview window to appear. I also had the same HW audio failure but was given the option to attempt to update it at a later time.
So installation is a little buggy and Netview kicking in is exactly when my program crashes every time (yes I have router permissions done and anti virus exceptions for it).
So I am sneaking into my son's room while he is away tonight to se if it will load and run on my 32 bit XP system. Eventually, I'll get that back and can use it. Worse case, I can boot it in safe mode for editing.
What I imagine would help a lot of people in the future would be a library of scaled objects that could be downloaded.
Ok--after a day of having to fix buggy software on three comps yesterday, I filled in the time trying to debug my Softimage mod tool installation.
After installing and debugging on two different architecture comps I determined it was a hardware issue. Softimage just doesn't like my carpy HP machine here with Win 7 on it.
Ironically today, just for giggles, I started up Softimage mod tool and darn if the thing didn't just decide to run.
Now on the 32 bit system I had it running last night with XP but after running the runonce.bat, I was not able to have the textures automatically imported with the OBJ models. The same thing happened now on this 64 bit Win 7 comp--but XSI is actually running otherwise (for now at least).
Any setting in the software regarding texture importation Is there a switch or default setting or preference somewhere to set or change?
We live for the carp...we debug for the carp.
If Mr. Morden were to appear now and ask me, "What do you want?" my answer would immediately be, "For all my software to always function like it was ideally intended to."
Where are those darn shadows when you need them? Curse you Vorlons curse yooooooou!!
