In mid 2010, we released Elemental: War of Magic. This was our first attempt at: [A] a fantasy strategy game and [B] a game that involved terrain. This produced…mixed results in that when released it was buggy (like on nVidia 7900 cards you get a white tactical battle screen which caused a particular PC Gamer UK reviewer to claim the game was totally broken) AND even once fixed it was…meh. v1.4 is decent but it’s no Master of Magic.
So the question is, what do you think we should do to describe Fallen Enchantress?
It exists in the same world but it’s a very different game. It’s not an expansion since there’s not much of War of Magic specific stuff in it. But I hasten to call it a sequel because sequels imply a continuation of an existing series of gameplay mechanics none of which exist.
So what do you suggest we do to describe it to new players?
Elemental: War of Magic - Fallen Enchantress

apparently the name got longer and longer
Don't they even look at the title screen??
Interesting that there's a hole paragraph about the awesome multiplayer mode...
Reminds me of the first game that still advertises amazing multiplayer and modding...officially.
Now that I have played the beta, the game is a race to become the most powerful being and unite the realm. It has alot of potential to be a metacritic 90+, but even if released as is, it would score better than most new TBS games. There is a supreme design behind this. It's not just a copy of HoMM's formula or King's Bounty. It is something in and of itself, with a good resemblance to MoM.
The true beauty of this game is that I can learn how to mod it in an hour or so and make some really great content. The XML is very user friendly. A huge improvement over WoM's. Each TBS Stardock makes gets better and better at this.
For me it looks like Fallen Enchantress is a total conversion mod for Elemental, namely Fall From Heaven 3 (Fall From Heaven light). Considering a disastrous design of Elemental, it's actually a good thing, with the only problem that there is a Fall from Heaven and Master of Mana (Civ 4 total conversions) as it is.
I'd call it Elemental II: The Fallen. Fallen Enchantress sounds odd.
But that's what it looks like to me too, I also am not in beta yet. Maybe most people who play it, maybe me included in the future, see it as a completely different game. But this thread is about what to call it and how to market it in the stores for people who already have NOT played it, right?
Well this is what it looks like for us. We see a couple of screenshots and a features list stating that it has been redesigned gameplaywise from the ground up. But the end result is still that it looks like a WoM expansion. Just in terms of our own shallow unresearched first impressions. If i actually play it i'm sure i will be impressed. But all of the people who already played it and loved it wont care what it is called, it is the new people / WoM disappointed people that needs to be brought in, right?
So I say just call it Elemental: Fallen Enchantress. Make a big deal about it being a NEW game in every way, make comparisons!Compare the changes (i don't know how valid this is, but just giving examples) between WoM and FE as the changes between Galciv2 and Twilight (in terms of the tech for instance, radical changes).
And as i said previously, put the name of the Civ4 Fall from Heaven mod on the friggin box. Make a big note about it being co-developed with that modder.Trust me, anyone who is interested in a 4x strategy game will put alot of value on that sort of thing..If a cynical gamer that felt ripped off after buying WoM just sees FE in the store (virtual or not), they may just discard it without giving it a chance.Heck, the best thing would be a time-limited demo or a demo limited to small maps and 1 playable race.
Point is, i'm sure as hell playing this asap. But i see no reason to give it a new name, it just annoys gamers. We all know it is built on a new evolution of Elemental. Elemental is a good brand name anyway, most people who were disappointed WANT it to be great. That's the nature of strategy game fans, we so badly WANT these games to be great. So seeing Elemental: Fallen Enchantress with a big deal made about how it is changed, is sure to bring more interest than just something completely rebranded and alien that people might completely miss.
The Game play is vastly difrent from World of magic. so it is fair to say it is a new game set in the same world.
It is a shame you decided to keep the same art stile since it make fallen enchantris so ugly. It seems to be be simmaler to Ice wind dale but the art is so low detail and bluriy it does not look good at all, Just looks dirty. But for name I would sugest "Fallen Enchantress; World of Elemental"
This way the game gets Called: Fallen, FE, or Fallen Enchantress. Not Elemental 2 but keeps the tie to Elemental in the titel.
Fallen Enchantress: It's Elemental but with rivers and wildlands minus dynasties!
Just go with the "it's a new game" stuff and drop the EWoM thing. It's bad blood...
It's a math based FPS that is designed to stop gang violence in third world countries.
I agree with Drakheim. Any association with Elemental:War of Magic would be a shame. Maybe Fallen Enchantress could be what that fiasco was meant to be.
So far I find the game really poor with starting positions and resources around you even with Dense settings. If you are improving the AI, then that will eliminate another complaint.
I never finished Elemental:war of magic even after almost 2 years from release. To me it is still a piece of crap at 1.4 and if I wasn't getting Fallen Enchantress free I would demand some sort of restitution for that abortion of a game.
Maybe you can get it right this time and the game won't seem blah! More quest, Meaningful NPCs, no stacks of doom, smart AI, fluid combat system and re-playability would be nice.
I haven't posted in nearly 8 months since I deleted that other worthless game and just took the loss in my wallet. I truly hope this game will be what you hope it will be.
As of right now, to me, it isn't enjoyable. I know it is in Beta so I will hold off with really nasty comments. Time will tell if you, Stardock, can recover your reputation with me.
its kinda like a sequel.
I'd rename it "The Art from Elemental: now with better gameplay!"
Seriously though, just plain "Fallen Enchantress"
