Just thought I'd get this going and then weigh in sometime soon. I picked it up and, so far, absolutely love it. My first character is a Sith Juggernaut Warrior. I love how its really story driven and the huge amount of voice acting. I also dig how crafting is setup. Anyway, all the time I'm going to put into this post for now... back to playing
Thought I'd update this with some useful info instead of having to dig through the thread.
Clan info, servers, etc.
Many of us are on the Kass City server - includes many SD staffers + folks from the community
Ryat has several other character on Hyperspace Cannon server:
Ryat - SentinelRyata - GunslingerTayme - SageZachy - Commando
The only dailies i know of are the pvp, heroics, and flashpoints.
So, I started a new character yesterday. Decided to go with an imperial agent that I intend to spec as a sniper once I hit 10. I'm really enjoying the story so far. It's quite a bit of fun to play a spy. I'm finding I'm skipping a bunch of dialog that I went through the 1st time as a bounty hunter, (making different choices often), but listening to all of the agent dialog anyway. Really fun stuff. I also decided to shoot myself 100k from my main account. As its so much easier to get 100k at level 50 (1-2 hours tops), I figured this might be quite a bit more fun. I didn't really like saving money left and right for multiple days so I could get my speeder ASAP. This way, I can just have my fun and then shoot some more dough over from my main when its needed. Anyway, I'm glad you can send stuff to yourself anyway.
I expect I'll be playing quite a bit this evening. If anyone wants to do some flashpoints or heroics, hit me up. I've got my level 50 bounty hunter or my level 7ish agent. I don't think the friend list stuff transfers over the account, so you'll probably need to add me under my new character as well. Then just let me know what you want to do.
level 50 bounty hunter - pacov
level 7 imperial agent - pewpewpacov
I might join you when you get past Dromund Kaas. Got my bounty hunter tank to level up.
You guys should really try out some of the light side story lines too. For example, the Jedi Guardian story line was about a million times better than the BH story line. I like the gamplay of the BH, but the story is just not very good compared to the JG.
I'm definiately going to give the jedi stuff a go after a bit. Anyway, hopping back on now and about to make my way to dromond.
Actually have my own 4 Republic characters on their own server. Hyperspace Cannon. It is a blast though I play Jedi Sentinel.
level 13 and still playing for a bit longer.
2 things I noticed - 1 I STRONGLY recommend. 1 - I had turned on subtitles - pretty sure most everyone reads faster than they listen. I decided to turn it off and I'm very glad I did. I noticed that recently I was quickly skipping through things after reading. Reading everything, at least for me, had me miss the mood/emotion that was intended with the direction. I'd read and be like... yeah... blahblah what do I need to do. When I turned the subtitles off, I actually listen again and pay attention to what's going on. Anyway, at least for me, I find its much more enjoyable to listen and watch than just read. If you are skipping over the story in places or finding yourself getting bored, I suggest going this route. Very helpful to me.
2-I think they made some sort of change recently with alt+tab. I play SWTOR in full screen mode. In the past, say when I'm looking for datacrons or w/e. when I alt+tab out, screwy crap could happen or it take a bit. Tonight, I alt+tab and I'm seeing my webbrowser perfectly and the game in the back ground. Super nice for datacron hunting or even this post. Glad they sorted that.
Probably switched to fullscreen-windowed without noticing.
Ah - I'm guessing that's the case. I'm going to keep it this way as I do like being able to easy swap back and forth on the web. Good stuff.
So, I've had the plague (or flu if you prefer) since Saturday. Took off Monday and Tuesday from work and spent a good chunk of time grinding out levels on my 2nd character (imperial agent dps sniper). Anyway, I've taken a different approach with this character than I did with my bounty hunter. I'm being quite social.
I decided early on that I'd do each and every heroic along with each and every flashpoint at the appropriate time (eg level 25 flashpoints around level 25 and so on). As a result, I'm been teaming up with folks left and right and have made some new pals - a few of which I expect to team up with on a regular basis as we seem to be moving at similar paces.
Onto stupid stories from SWTOR - I'm on Nar Shadda. I use my imperial agent buff on a bounty hunter (I typically do this sort of thing all the time when I pass folks and it occasionally results in them returning the favor). Well, this time a guy immediately says "you in a guild." I say no (guild membership is apparently per character and not per account). He says "want to join." I say "sure." He invites me to his guild and I join. Now, do I expect anything to come of this? Nope. If it does, then super. Anyway, then he and I go along and complete a quest or 2. The last quest we do makes me want to punch him in the face.
You know that bounty hunter bug where sometimes you will continue to shoot your gun over and over, but do no damage (eg after the enemy is dead)? Well, he did that just as we were hearing the audio for my imperial agent quest. And I turned off subtitles so I'd pay more attention to the dialog... only I can't hear the dialog because this jack ass is firing his gun non stop. Anyway, long story short, I have no idea what Agent X was saying... at all... and it seemed to be a bit of dialog. Anyway, do any of you remember the imperial agent storyline where Agent X appears to be blackmailing you (maybe)?
Anywho... I'd love to know what was said... smeh
Nope, but in your chat box you can go to other and it will leave it in printed form there. And yes, it clears out when you log out.
Sob
fast notes... dropped the random clan on my alt. Pretty much struck me as a bunch of kiddos that just random invite folks (eg nothing worthwhile there). Saw someone posting one of those annoying clan recruit messages and replied... told looking for level 50's. they have like 6 now. Will follow up and make pals with them and see what comes of that. more tomorrow.
A few random topics:
Leveling quickly - I'm finding that one of the fastest ways to level my character is to do space missions. Specifically, the most difficult ones on a daily basis. You get anywhere from 10k-14k xp for between 4-11 minutes. Plus you get the added benefit of simply doing something different than the usual grind. It's not great for credits, but for xp - yup. Can't think of any other way to consistently (eg daily) get that much XP is so little time. I actually paid attention to how the bonus mission XP works while I was on tatooine. For every bonus objective you completed (eg stage 1, stage 2, etc) you get xp immediately on the fly. I was getting about 4k per bonus there + a payout at the end via the drop box. Anyway, some good xp there.
Bad experiences in groups - well, now that I'm playing significantly more often in groups, I'm bound to end up with a few bad experiences here and there with folks. Had something like that last night. The only thing that seems to set folks off (so far that I've seen) is some sort of whinging about item drops. I'm curious if there is any real etiquette that really should be followed or if its just some arse gets an idea in his head how things are supposed to be then bitches if you go against it. Anyway, here's the scenario from last night where I pissed off some nerdling. I'm an imperial agent and have a bounty hunter as a companion. One of the people in my party is a bounty hunter. An item drop appears that is armor for a bounty hunter. Its about 100 more armor + better stats than what I have on my companion. I select need (need it for my companion). I win the roll... commence bitching and whining for the next 30 minutes making the experience very annoying. Anyway, I'm sure this guy was being an ass with how he carried on after not getting his precious level 30 item drop, but I'm curious if I was being a dick to pick need in the first place. Not like I'm clicking need on every drop... just the ones I need...
Binds on pickup? - Are there items that bind the moment you pick them up? I've seen all of those items that bind when I try to equip them (eg that pop up appears warning you that this will be bound). The fellow from the bad experiences in groups indicated that the armor I picked up was bound immediately... fueling his retarded rant. Does any item really bind on pickup (eg you can't give it away, etc)? I know some binds when you equip them, but that's about it.
Guilds - So I mentioned I joined a goofy guild the other day. I dropped that last night as I didn't think anything would come of it and the folks seemed to be in a substantially younger age group than me. I then responded to one of those groups advertising in the imperial fleet. After a brief discussion, I joined that group on my pewpewpacov account. They say they have about 60 people with 6-8 that have level 50 accts. So, I'm hoping I can start teaming up with these folks for flashpoints and ops. I'll keep you fellas posted on my experience there in case they turn out to be very active so that more and more of us could get playing together on a frequent basis. Pretty sure its more than just me that would like to have folks to play regularly with.
level 50 bounty hunter -merc - dps - pacov
level 30 imperial agent -sniper - dps - pewpewpacov
Groups can be annoying. And yes items in Flash Points are Bound On Pick up. And yes you were being a dick with your Main character being an Agent then needing an item for your Companion when you have a Bounty Hunter in the mix.
Generaly you only need what you can use. Not what any companion can use.
Its what Ive been told when Ive done some Flashpoints.
Oh well live and learn.
Btw...Ive hit a wall. Got a 48, and Im losing intrest in the game. Mostly b/c Im tired of questing alone.
Well, I'd do any flashpoint or heroics with you on my 50. Just hit me up and we'll play sometime this weekend for sure. If you haven't added me (can't remember), add my pewpewpacov character and message me through that. I've only been on that one lately. Anyway, if its you and me, I'd wager I can get a few of the level 50 guild folks to join in.
And noted - apparently my item grab for my companion as need was a dick move. I'll not do that in the future. Thanks for the feedback fellas.
Never need for a companion, and there is a shit ton of etiquette for item drops. Those items are the main reason people are doing anything. Doing shit for loot is the game. If you are needing on loot meant for another, I would never play with you again and warn others to also not play with you.
Do remember accidents (or kids) happen. Once my kids wanted to be helpful while I was up and about and they "needed" something. Fortunately the other guy that did need to need got the roll.
Yeah - its just a shame there's no way of knowing said etiquette if you are brand new to MMOs without having someone chew you out. I'd generally prefer to avoid being a dick to begin with. I certainly get not needed something that you can't use, but something that you can (via companion) seems a little off. Sure companions are useless at level 50 (other than crafting), but quite valuable prior to it. That said, I get it. I'll just need items that apply to my primary character going forward and greed everything else or pass. Why concepts like this couldn't be covered in as a popup or mini tutorial are beyond me - would only take a one liner during your first flash point ("people will yell at you if you choose to need items that are not for your primary class").
Yeah "needing" on anything not for your primary is a huge no-no. Of course as you've already said it would be nice to have those things covered in a quick tutorial of some sort for the newbies.
As far as guilds go? Look for one with 100+ members (ours has 145 I think at the moment). The reason I say this, is because those guilds usually have dedicated people to setting up the weekly hard-mode raids (where the good shit drops) and people from whom you can actually learn things. Our guild has both European and North American members so it's great for questing, heroics and the aforementioned flashpoints. Check websites online as well as the official forums (I know they are mostly filled with whining drivel these days but) there are good guilds to be found out there you just might have to re-roll on another server that's all.
EDIT:
Also, once you get into the longer hard-mode flashpoints and world bosses etc. you'll need much more than 5-6 level 50's (more like 20-30 to choose from) or you'll have a hard time getting the ops-groups set up right in order to take down those world bosses. If you can't find another larger guild on your server and don't mind re-rolling (I've re-rolled on several servers now because some server pops are better/more balanced for PVP than others) send me a PM and I'll send you our server/guild info. Another thing. With a larger guild there are always a few who somehow have several million credits at any given time so if/when your group wipes (everyone dies in the flashpoint etc.) causing huge armour repair bills or if someone needs to respec their skills for this particular flashpoint people will sometimes offer to cover the cost of same for those players not in the multiple million credit bracket (I'm not one of those btw.....always seem to find myself credit-poor....lol).
Well seriously thinking of re-rolling a new server and going 'pub.
Or at least making a new one toon on Kass City.
If you do I am on Hyperspace Cannon. I got 4 Republic toons there.
I am on most likely for the rest of the night.
Ryat - 48 Sentinel
Ryata - 19 Gunslinger
Zachy - 31 Commando
Tayme - 18 Sage
pfft - where were you between like 8PM EST and now? I've been on all night and haven't seen you at all. Even managed to do a flashpoint with the new guild I joined... I was even looking for 1 more.
Step 1 - log on. Step 2 - pm pacov or pewpewpacov. Step 3 - profit by doing flashpoints/heroics with me + whoever else I nab from the guild I'm trying out. I think its fairly clear that the original guild isn't currently seeking out folks to do things with. That's why I've been looking into other things as well. So far so good with the new guild.
