Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

mmm... pacov would like some in house games for his birthday. wonders if dreams come true. I'll likely be on around 8PM EST or so. Thanks for the games already today fellas. Cya!
i sent this to pacov in a pm when the posts weren't working (for discussions sake)
adding to that:
1- you spent a lot of time top giving a super leash to the jungler then "ganking"? Kat with 9 potions
2- Along the lines of what thunder was saying...
You tanked a full set of two? waves of minions. You wasted your E for "damage" (that was absorbed by creeps, btw), you were half health and fully aggro'd before Karl even ganked. Thunder used his exhaust on you - to be fair, you died so quickly and were weak enough at that point, that if Thunder had exhausted Karl instead (-50% AS hurts Xin Zhaos ganks quite a bit since that makes his Three Talon take quite a while to do its thing), we would have killed both of you and gotten double buffs.
This would have been more true if i had Ignite, or a Longsword instead of Boots due to higher DPS.
As Riot brings champions more-and-more into balance, champions are more to be picked for Team Composition, then they are because they are just generally OP (or counter a generally OP counterpick). There will probably always be a few "OPs" every patch, but... 6 bans fixes that.
------
Why you pick Blitz:
1- OP jungle invade (let's be honest)
2- you want to 2v1 top lane
I know that your team was unhappy about your 2v1 top, but he's actually really good against people who aren't pure tanks in a 2v1 lane (so not Singed).
Sure, he can't protect his carry very well, but you should have been putting your traps in better places like it was a 2v1 lane, not a 2v2 lane. You also mis-cleansed twice because you would Cleanse before my Fear actually went off (it takes about 1.5 seconds from the beginning of the tether for it to activate). Cleanse isn't like QSS where it removes all debuffs.
3- your team is going to be all about dancing around baron mid-game
4- you want to exploit a squishy support like Sona or Soraka on the enemy team (counterpick situation)
That said, i will say that both of your Blitz's had a kinda low success rate when it came to grabs (the first game got Singed a few times but like the first time at level 2, Blitz lost more damage to tower than you got onto Singed). But then again, Kog is a pretty long-range carry and you were so weak the 2nd game, even if he got grabs it mostly wouldn't have mattered.
yup - i had every intention of dying in that fight - my goal was to pull out a 2 for 1. Everyone gets money and I come back with some more damagesustain. Trouser plays it right and karl at least gets 1 of you fellas. That 1 gank is not even what got me going. It was trouser coming back to lane without wards when we were already behind... the previous game, without folks bitching at him, mind you... he went 2 snowball items on akali. Either way, fuck blitz.
so just watched that replay: you jumped over 9 creeps (tanking them all), your E was absorbed by minions and you had 50 hp when Xin Zhao jumped on me. Xin was actually the one who was exhausted - if i didn't panic, we should have killed him for the double buff.
While you were dying, blitz tanked 5 creeps, and after we ran a bit, there were 4 creeps (and a creep wave was approaching our backs). 10 creeps is easily as much dps as a champion, and i'm relatively certain we actually could have gotten 3 kills, for possibly me dying (though i did have boots + bloodboil so ???).
There was no way you would have gotten 2 kills for just you - blitz isn't that much damage at level 2, bb'd nunu would have done much more, and Kog's Q debuff is exceptionally strong when you're talking about 10 creeps and being level 3. And we had an exhaust + snowball on Xin Zhao.
didn't say it was the worlds best plan, mind you. But it was the plan anyway. Lordy. Anyway, mr karl made the call, I backed it, and trouser ignored it. Obviously it would have gone better if blitz was on board (eg if you guys could have killed karl and missed that with just him and me, I really doubt blitz's presence would have increased the odds of an additional kill for you). More than likely, we'd have picked up at least 1 of you (karl with gap closer + knock up, blitz to pull back in with knockup. Played right, I'd think its pretty good odds for a kill - in which case you get 1 kill 1 assist and we get 1 death, 1 kill, 2 assist). Anywho, that's what I was thinking. I assumed I'd die and we'd win the exchange. And even if we only got 1 - that would probably have been 2 asssists + 1 kill for us vs 1 assist + 1 kill for you guys.
Anyway, again - not the best call, but that was the call. And I wasn't really all that pissed at trouser all that much for exchange. That was more for the refusing to join in on the call and then also coming back without wards when I'm already behind.
i didn't know that giving Kog kills was the plan. Also "two assists" doesn't mean more gold. It just makes your teams score look better. "Gold equal to 50% of the amount the killer receives is put in a pot which is split equally among all champions who scored an assist."
Esp because your lane is about:
1- avoiding damage
2- waiting for Blitz to land a kill
Not about you going all-in on me with your E and trying to outdps Kog.
A nunu + kog lane doesn't help with ganks "that" much. Though Hec did come down bot a few times (and the time he came through your tribush he did get a kill), but our gank threat is not all that high in terms of getting kills, so worrying about wards isn't the end of the world. The most we'd hope for is sending you to base while we got a really fast dragon with Kog + Nunu.
Blitz doesn't do anything after a pull + knock at level 2. Kog has his on-death passive to blow up Karl (if he did win), then Karl would have lost his double-buffs, putting him way behind in the jungle.
Blitz not being on board has nothing to do with you tanking 9 creeps, E'ing over them and dying before the jungler even arrived (also how is Blitz supposed to hook through 9 minions?)
beep boop boop - fuck blitzcrank.
Really like the new login screen - trying to see if they patched anything..
Played properly I think we would have won that exchange. Level 3 Xin does quite a bit of damage. A win would have required a successful blitz grab, but that shouldn't have been hard since it should have been fired when I knocked up with my Q.
I agree that pacov deciding to initiate the fight in the middle of a giant creep wave substantially before I got there was bad.
Xin doesn't need blue very much (his Q+E is surprisingly mana efficient), so losing buffs doesn't put me behind.
in house games going live in a min or so: http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1
I have to agree here. Mr. Pacov loves tanking minion waves and leaving 2+ at the tower to chase! (only bad thing about laning with him usually )
Wrote a substantially longer post earlier, but it wasn't working and I can't remember what I wanted to say so I will leave it at that.
Hecarim, don't ban him or else.
Witness the might of pacov.
Anywho - 1st off - thx for all the in house games tonight. Think I lost all of them but the last one, but I really enjoy playing with and against pals, so thx. Nice bday gift and I'm glad so many were available for it.
So - thoughts about games. We need bryff to stop doing experimental builds during in house games. Try it out in solo or when we are playing together, but choose more consistent builds unless you detect a huge adv gained against the enemy team (factoring in early/mid/late). I didn't pay attention to how you built, but a few folks called out your build as kinda wtf was that.
2nd thought - bans. My team did not communicate exceedingly well at points. Any fail bans are my fault as I was captain, but I'd, in chat, ask if we want an amumu or shen ban. The vote goes for amumu and then I hear about why the fug didn't you ban shen for a bit. We sorted out that mess in the last game, but please speak up and discuss bans VERY vocally if you have concerns or you want a targeted ban. retarded pacov continued his fuck blitz rant a little too long.
Last game thoughts - I think the other team made a big mistake when ad/support went top instead of bot. Maybe you guys thought we were also going to swap. If so, then I think that was a good move. Otherwise, I don't. At least tonight, you guys consistently worked us over during early/mid in the bot ad/support matchup. By swapping, you gave me a chance to get up to speed quickly with zero deaths. Which helped me a ton anyway. I think you might have been better served by being in the same lane with me and trying to keep me down (like you were able to do in previous games). Also, gotnades is not going to be able to 2 v 1 me and a support successfully. I'm all for him doing that in a non in house game or if I think he has a soft matchup on the flop, but olaf isn't going to farm for crap vs cait + support and will get run out. All of that said, we both killed our towers at the same time, so the only difference was that olaf and j4 had a crappy start while adc and support on both teams had a solid start. tl dr for this bit; I think olaf needed a better start to be useful mid/late and putting him into a lane where he didn't have one hurt him quite a bit.
Other last game thoughts; karl was of the opinion that you folks should have pushed all the way to base when I was taking mulitple towers and 2 inhibs. He was also under the impression that you guys would do this. I was convinced that you folks we become indecisive. Which led to me getting 3 towers (1 base tower) and 2 inhibs in a single push while you got 2 towers and 1 inhib. I don't think you could have won the game if you kept going, but that indecisiveness about whether to come to me or keep pushing lost the game imo.
Anyway, I'm glad to have won 1 game on my bd to in house. Thanks for that and for all the ass whoopins in previous games. I'm less thankful for that, but very happy to have enough pals to play games like these.
here's a link to the last game of the night anyway: http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/1843653
I don't know if they could have finished, but if they were going to push 5 mid at that point, their only choice was to go for it. Otherwise they should have just defended immediately or at least sent one back.
Generally, 2v1 lanes benefit Kog because he scales better than others, and 2v1 lanes donate a lot of gold to the carry.
Also, we could do double golems top-lane.
The real reason we swapped though, was because of Twisted Fate. We figured that a 2v1 lane with a Twisted Fate was a 2v2 with one weak toplaner and TF. Compare that to a 2v2 lane, when it'd be 3v2. When Xel chose Jarvan, that sealed the deal.
Generally, Olaf scales better than J4 as well, and he functions extremely well in a 2v1 lane. i don't know why you are saying he is bad.
Now, what we "should" have done was invade your blue, Olaf could have solo'd our blue, recalled, then teleported to tower. With blue buff, and his quick level 2, he is pretty much the best 2v1 laner. But if you say he sucks, okay.
Anyway, he did better than J4 (29 v 21 when tower fell). Plus, he had teleport so he could have based and tp'd back if he needed to.
Shen actually clears jungle better than I thought season 3 (haven't tried him in jungle recently since he is always banned). He is nothing special in jungle, but decent.
Anyway, I'd like to be on record that Shen should always be banned or first pick. He completely gums up the mid game if you play him top (he isn't a huge deal in jungle).
Heh, maybe you should have been since you were beating the crap out of us. Our only way out was to go into weird split push mode.
Anyway, fun games. First one was close anyway, second one you destroyed, third one was close again.
I managed to really tick off Hedgie on the last game...
I want to apologize profusely for doing so.
Sorry :/
re: the 2v1 lane - that's just personal opinion in a lane vs cait. We had the same conclusion in both lanes (both brusiers lost towers at the same time) and both were underfarmed. I just think based on previous games you fellas would have been better setting up another 2v2 lane and said as much in the post. Your logic makes sense, though.
I'm cancelling our romantic weekend getaway, hedgie.
Anywho... I'm, I think I'm about done bragging and reading things in context...
That said, I don't have a problem with critiques. I like getting better. The thing neither of us see eye to eye on in that 1 particular engage. Karl made a call to go in. I backed the call. Trouser did not. I think I explained my rationale (right or wrong) and you fellas continuously pointed out that I tanked a bunch of minions and was exploded. Where we differ is on what would have happened if trouser backed the call. And even then... my fuck blitzcrank had NOTHING to do with that one play. It had to do with some crap in the previous game and then trouser not picking up wards. The gank blitz nunu/kog call was ballsy. Might have worked with blitz, didn't work without. And I was aware that I'd die for sure in the exchange regardless of how it went. So, ballsy, quite possibly stupid, call. I generally don't understand the level of passion associated with the critiques. Anyhow, sorry if my commentary was offensive to you or sounded like I was bragging about being the Christ child. See comments in bold above...

We were having some personality conflicts on our team for all the games, but it came to a head on that last one. It was difficult to get any sort of cooperation going without feeling like we were pulling teeth, so we were all a bit distracted, which made it harder to hear how we failed tactically. Not making excuses cause you guys played a great game, and your strategy to counter what we were doing was terrific. Love having these in house games as well, and hopefully we can keep them going.
"I generally don't understand the level of passion associated with the critiques."
As you've pointed out you're great at pointing out your own errors, but you do bristle when others give you criticism. To be fair, no one else has their games and everything they've said in them out there to be picked apart, and they probably wouldn't enjoy having their mistakes pointed out without asking. Wasn't trying to do that by bringing up that failed gank, I just saw a situation where I wouldn't have personally liked to be treated poorly for being slow to follow up a debatable decision with very little warning of what was planned. It's really a blast playing with you when we're on the same page but it's not fun at all when we're not, so it's hard for me to keep quiet (I know I should) when I see something like that.
ah - so i added insult to injury. Understood. Sorry for that guys.
Cowbuttzex seems to calm everyone down.
Cow makes all games fun...
we missed ye
I am to blame with my new microphone and stuff for the conflicts...
I need you guys to tell me when I need to tone it down.
I am sorry for any injuries I caused, both intentional and unintentional.
Hello
I didn't go any experimental stuff yesterday except in the one ranked game we were obviously winning hugely, and I only got a vamp scepter anyway. Also, whenever you guys are hating on me for "my build" I'm usually like 6-0 and then you blame me for losing team fight. So stop that! Also your pal Bryff got a sick double kill which prevented us from losing then and there against the one MF. And ended up 10-5 when we lost. IDK what you are complaining about. D:
