Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
Having a jungler essentially always occurs in games with level 30 players. Therefore, you need to create an additional solo lane. Top is preferable to bottom because you want 2 people in the lane closest to dragon. You need those two people, otherwise the other team can exert superior dragon control, which is a significant advantage.
Pro teams will frequently invert top and bottom and go 2v1 top and 1v2 bot. This is based on pre arranged champions that they can select and take advantage of the strange situation. This also requires significant coordination to make sure that the dragon is properly protected.
vi changes/fixes/buffs inbound
Here is the full post from Gypsylord: "Hey guys, At some point in the future a patch will come out. Contained within it will be a multitude of bug fixes for Vi. Wanted to give you guys some clarity on what exactly some of the fixes are and how they're going to affect you as a Vi player. -Vault Breaker (Q): -Vault Breaker will now always refund its CD and mana when interrupted Currently Vault Breaker is sometimes being put on cooldown when Vi gets CC'd during its charge time. This is not the intended functionality. As a melee champ who focuses on autoattacks, losing the VB charge is already punishing enough for Vi. She should not be losing her move-block on top of that. -Vault Breaker will now always stun for the intended amount of time (.5 seconds) Currently VB, when hit at max range, is not stunning champs for as long as intended. Going to fix that. -Vi will now always attack enemy champions after hitting them with Q Currently Vi sometimes won't attack her enemy after landing a VB. Now she always will. Should be a good feel change. Q + Auto + E should flow right into each other much better now. -Excessive Force (E) -The responsiveness of Vi's attacks after using Excessive Force is being increased EF currently hits twice as fast as a normal attack. This creates a longer space between an EF empowered strike and the attack following it. The end result? Excessive Force feels rather clunky and sluggish. I'm decreasing the wind-down time Vi will experience after hitting someone with EF. This means the attack after EF will now come out slightly faster. Should feel a lot better and also add a good amount of power (faster attacks = more damage and dueling potential). -Assault and Battery (R): -Assault and Battery will no longer be canceled by stealth and the damage won't be negated by characters with CC immunity. Currently A&B is getting dodged by things that shouldn't be able to dodge it. Not intended. The ONLY ways a champ should be able to avoid A&B is by going untargetable or putting up a spellshield. Olaf and Morg will no longer stop its damage and Akali will no longer be able to twilight shroud herself out of danger. -Champions affected by Assault and Battery will no longer be able to cast spells after being knocked into the air. Currently targets of A&B are able to cast spells like flash, troll pool, and tumble for about .25 seconds after being knocked up. The CC wasn't being applied early enough in the animation. This change should put an end to ADC's flashing away AFTER you hit them.
pulled from reddit re: the flask change on pbe:
Some math on the new flask:
Old Flask cost 225g and was worth:
New Flask costs 345g and is worth:
Other fun facts:
You can still start Flask and a ward, but then you can only afford one more pot.
The actual health regen granted by new flask is the same as the old flask (which is also the same as a health pot) which is 10 health/sec, but the mana regen was increased to 5 mana/sec from 4 mana/sec (both of which are less than the mana regen given from a mana pot which is ~6.7 mana/sec)
Edit: If you factor in the resale value, assuming the new flask will resell for more than 90g (the resale value of old flask) then it would only take 1 refill for the new flask to be worth its price. (old flask still needs 1 refill to be worth it even when factoring in resale value)
TLDR It now will take one more refill at fountain for flask to be worth it, while also costing more initial gold.

Brief off topic commentary - I went out to what is now my fav restaurant last night. The place is called Texas de Brazil. Silly name imo, but pretty damn amazing. Here's how it works. They sit you at a table and give you this card (coaster sized) that you flip over when you want more meat. You flip that thing over and they bring you various perfectly cooked meats all on skewers. If someone comes by with something you want to try, you ask for that and they hook you up. Once you flip the card over, within like 30 seconds you have people offering you various meats like filet, leg of lamb, etc. Anyway, if you happen to have one near you, I'd really recommend it: http://texasdebrazil.com/locations
thus ends pacov jibba jabba about restaurant.
saw an interesting chart over on reddit
This pic shows the win % odds you have with all of the characters. Note that a rengar has 9.38% lower odds of winning a game at this point... with diana not much better. The chart also solidifies that mf is the current king (queen) of adcs.
One stat I found really interesting that if you go are garen, you are 7.69% more likely to win, which sounds a little crazy. Keep in mind that these numbers don't have a 1 to 1 correlation to games played. For instance, karma is played very seldomly, but factors in at -7.89% to win due to her overall win rate when she's played. When looking at data like this, its best to consider what champs are most commonly played. If those champs have a higher win rate %, then that's a pretty good indicator that they are possibily overpowered in the current meta.
Amumu, for instance, is +5.74% more likely to win a game and is utilized quite a bit when not banned in mid elo games. The reason being, ofc, that his initiates are so strong and require a relatively low skill cap, both for amumu AND for the rest of the team (eg oh shit amumu is going in, FOLLOW HIM!). So, its generally a good idea to pick up amumu when possible if he's free unless you have another great initiator. And ofc, provided you or someone on your team is a competent jungler.
By the same sort of logic, mf is a very intelligent pick in the current meta now - combine her ult with an amumu jungler and well - boom. Anyway, the pic is worth taking a look at and thinking through a wee bit.
Other thoughts - I think zed is a wee bit overpowered. Now, I'm not exactly a good zed - kinda far from it, but playing 1 game last night I was in a position where there was a 100% chance I could pick off either the ap carry or the ad carry every single time. I really don't think there should be characters with a 100% chance to take out a major damage dealer. He has an extreme gap closer with flash/ult/shadow - so its pretty damn hard to stop him from killing a given target. And his burst is just sick and something that certainly can't be itemized for on adc. There are better picks for mids, ofc, but I'm pretty confident that having 100% chance to take out ad/ap carry is OP. And that's what zed brings even in an unfed form. That said - per the current stats - you are 3.16% less likely to win if you pick zed. I think the solution is a nerf on his ult, but with him currently under performing stat wise, I don't know that we'll see that.
I've played kass against zed mid. The first couple times I got zoned but another time after that I was able to get good farm (for me), not die, and I almost thought it was easy to dodge the skill shots. Maybe he's kinda like an ahri only ad. All you have to do is dodge. I agree about everything in team fights though, same with khazix.
About that game. Kass is such a hard counter to TF. Like, tank 9 turret shots and get the kill without even trying, type of counter. But from what I skimmed through you were doing not that good.
yah - his laning phase isn't amazingly strong by a long shot.
Zed isn't that good.
He tends to fall into the pattern where he can kill somebody, but then immediately gets blown up himself. Its 1 for 1.
He is also a mid that doesn't do AP damage, can't tank, isn't a bruiser, can't initiate, and has crap CC. Given that your AD carry also falls into the category (but is much safer due to range), you end up putting a lot of stress on the rest of your teammates to fulfill all those other team functions.
Most other mids at least do AP damage and usually have either hard CC or lots of team utility.
I put some stuff in the post up thar. ^
methinks riot is getting ready for a tuesday patch. Yet another update to pbe is going live tonight.
Tried thresh - very fun - lots of potential.
well - that's the thing - if he dies, he dies. Taking out a high value target like the adc should be worth an assassin methinks.
about to do a 5v5 in house on stream - teams a little mismatched, but we shall see.

Game 3 live in 1-2 min
done for the night. So - summary of the evening. We completely, utterly, destroyed in game 1. Like it looked like we were against the amazing scrub team. Games 2-3 (maybe 4?) were ass whoopins (other team destroyed us). After game 1 - thunder's team dropped 1 guy and picked up cow. I don't really think that was the major difference maker, but well - cow shows up and we all die.
Anyway, we have broken the 1 in house game a month cycle. We hit 3 in house games tonight. If we are lucky we can do another tonight.
Side note - thank pacov and thunder if u like the in house games. We both try to work things out so we have enough to do big team games. If they happen, its probably because of us. Also - f u thunder. I don't like going 15/2/X and then losing 2 games. Hate u.
night all!

I don't want to be a dick, but because you were asking for feedback after your last game, let me say something.
You might want to work on your game state awareness early and mid game. You almost never press tab (you went something like 20 minutes without pressing it once in game 3), so you don't know builds or CS or scores in other lanes. You don't even know the summoner spells of people in your own lane (you had to ask your support at like level 6). Also, you essentially never watch what is happening in other lanes on your screen (for example, when I die early, I always look at other lanes instead of staring at my corpse so I can get a feel for what is happening in the lane).
Yet despite this, you are making essentially all the calls early on. This is what we argue about all the time when I play jungle - you always demand a relatively high percentage of the pressure from jungle/mid, even though I know you don't know the full game state. I tend to know the CS scores in each lane, as well as K/D, but you will argue with me non stop if I ever choose to put pressure somewhere else.
We saw this in game 3 as well. You were constantly bugging Trouser to gank your lane. He tried to argue that it wasn't a good idea because of warding situation, but you overrode him. I agree with the other team when they said after the game that a major problem was that you dedicated too many team resources (ganks from jungle and mid) to the bot lane when it didn't make sense and it definitely hurt your other lanes. I mean, you aren't even pressing tab enough to know how many wards Nunu has or if he bought Sightstone, but you are non stop calling for ganks to bot.
Now, I'm not saying that you have to spend that much effort into knowing the full game state early or that you can't ask for ganks sometimes. But if you don't know the game state, I don't think that you should be making all the calls for team resources. And please don't argue with the jungler about where he should be ganking if you dont know the CS and K/D in other lanes, and if you don't even know the ward status on their support.
I'm not singling you out or anything, because God knows I could improve on a lot of things, but thats the first thing that I've noticed from watching a few of your streams.
Not gonna lie to yah - pretty boozed for the last game. Anyway, reading your feedback now and thx for it.
