Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

anyone else think aphromoo as support on CLG as support is dumb as shit?
For those that have been following him, he's an excellent adc that often fails when it comes to tourneys. His stream is very entertaining to watch though and he seems like a great guy. BUT - he's a smeh support. My theory is that CLG picked him up because he will bring all of his viewers with him. So now, aphro won't get 100% of the profits from his steam, but will get tourney money if they win (+ whatever dough CLG puts out for active teammates). I'd think Clg will take some % of his stream income. Great opportunity for aphro at any rate.
Love his stream and watch quite a bit. Just watched him do play a terrible support ali for instance and misplay getting dbllift killed multiple times... I wish him the best and am thrilled he has a chance at making money as a support for CLG, but he's not a great support. Here's to hoping he develops and becomes a strong teammate for CLG!

yesterday our wins indicate we really tore it up.
I haven't gotten to try the on-hit kassadin today yet. What do you guys think the build should look like? My thinking is
First item: Normally on Kass I like getting rod of ages first, because it increases the mana for warps and gives hp and ap, which are good. For kass, with malady and w and spellsword, it is .45 of ap in magic on basic attacks. That means the rod gives not quite 40 damage. And an on-hit kass will still benefit from all that it gives. I also think it's crucial for laning phase. So I don't want to give this up.
Second item: Sorcerer's Shoes. They won't know what I'll be doing yet, and kass gets lots of AS from passive already.
Third item: malady. At this point I should have 125ish ap so the passive on it will add almost 30 by itself, over 50 with nether blade.
Four: wits end. 42 is better than that 30 or so from malady but the ap on malady might help more.
Five/six: At this point I don't know if Nashor's Tooth or blade of the ruined king would be better to get first. more speed and cdr and ap or a life stealing passive thing? Assuming champs have 2k hp that's 40 hp (2% of hp) per attack, (Another question: would nashors tooth make AS get maxed out?, because I've seen some insane AS because of passive... if so gunblade would replaceit or wits end?)
Hextech gunblade? It is 45 damage and 65 ap (making another 30 damage basics, so over 70 added by itself). The only thing is that the abilities will be lower damage with this build and the spell vamp won't be very good, and the life steal only works on the base ad, so that's only like 10 hp per hit probably. Not as good as ruined king blade.
As another option: Iceborn? With nashor's tooth that's 30% cdr (so 3.5s cd level 3 warp) and mana for easier chaining. Armor for getting in the thick of things, because this build necessitates getting close.
On another note. An alternative build is to build rod, iceborn, and archangels staff into ap and mana, and the mana % into ap will make ap higher, as well as the base ap of the items. Just heard about it...with 3000 mana that's 90 ap, and (90+80+40+50)*.3=78 added w from ap, at level 5 w that's 90+78 = +168 for basics while w is on, and it's a lot more tanky and is standard ap, but no AS. How about it?
I give you SUPPORT HEIMER. You should try this out. http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/1820711
hmmm... says pacov to karl - http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/1820746
Note - 1st and only ping happens at the beginning of the vid.
The call came from Darius...which is why I said that "we" pinged it. He repeatedly pinged baron right after we killed Nunu, and I think he pinged it when we were about mid. You had him on ignore so you didn't see it. I wasn't aware that you were ignoring pings, so I thought that you would follow them.
It was the right call since we had 2 of them down, but we decided to run all over the map and farm. The other choice would have been to push bottom. I just don't think that it is the time to double farm a lane when we get 2 kills in the mid to late game.
I wanted to force the fight 4v4 at baron anyway since we had full ults and they had limited damage (and 4v4 with their Nunu and our Heimer missing is better than 5v5), so between my ult and Darius dunk, we should have been able to win that.
Anyway, sorry that you didn't see the pings, but you should tell us or something if you ignore somebody so that we know you aren't seeing the calls.

yah - been a long time swan. catch u sometime soon.
new character on pbe - thresh - watch this and skip ahead to 30 seconds... pacov = nervous
Ok - so semi serious top lane discussion if anyone can muster up an opinion or has some insight. I'd appreciate it. I'm quite undecided on how best to build nidalee as a top laner. Now, just to cover a few things, pro teams have used her as a top laner for her sustain and tower push (eg building tanky/ad). This isn't logical against all comps, mind you, but it seems to consistently work. Side note - karl - pacov knows he should not build armor against akali - my brain apparently did not work quite so well... as in at all. I don't know why I sometimes lack the ability to determine if I should build mr or arm. Anywho...
So, nidalee is great. She doesn't need wards to be safe. She's super annoying as she can out sustain most champs rather easily (even if you have a minor setback with a trade or 2). Anywho, for my ad build I've been going r>e>q>w. I start with uber sustain (flask/red+blue pots). Sadly, I think this is best start for just about all top laners at this point as sustain is king early game in that lane. Anyway, I can easily last in lane until I hit 1350 gold or so, with or without ganks... even being camped - at least so far.
So for build... I've been really going back and forth between a few things. Sometimes I start out on my first shop building a giant belt + boots. The gb for sunfire. The stats on it are great and it makes lane clearing a breeze without spending mana. And its very safe (eg another reason why you can go wardless and get out of a gank). Then, I'll start building a cleaver or toss in a dorians blade. Anyway, then I just stack dmg or w/e. But I haven't built consistently yet and I'm certain I could better itemize. Everything pretty much works for my goal of staying in lane as long as possible and then pushing towers. I also want to give boots of mobility a go as well. That + her passive means I can get most places very quickly... and as I'll be split pushing when possible or picking up the slack as needed.
Anyway, I think I've done well in every game but 1 (but I got my crap together at least a bit) as nid. Room for improvement, but consistent performance methinks. Downside to my build - there's no huge ranged poke damage on my spears. There's some, but not enough to send most characters to base. Other downside - while she can be useful in teamfights, she's probably not as useful as other charcters (though my tankalee is more useful without us having one). Her damage output is very strong over sustained engages, but not as strong for burst after her 3 abilities in tiger form. Her AS steriod is pretty damn useful if I'm building all damage, but I often feel like i should cast it to heal someone or to buff our adc (who might not have as much burst potential as me).
I'm set in my ways re: my opening items (flask/blue+red pots). And I'd be willing to try out a hybrid build, but am not looking to do a full ap. Any thoughts on good builds or things to try? Keep in my that my 1st shop will very likely have 1350 gold.
So I have been playing Ashe quite a bit. I really like her and I think I have gotten better at my positioning - and at managing her abilities and limitations. It's not perfect as there is little to no strategery in the games that I play. At times I develop some synergy with the person I am laning with but mostly we are just fighting near each other...
I have played some Katarina ans Yi...I like both of those as well. As above I see the possibilities expanding once I start playing some voip games.
I'm looking for another champion or two. I'd like a solid tank that I can work on. Rammus is free this week and I have tried him a bit. He's ok but I don't think he is my best choice. I'd also like a solid support champion. Those are the roles that seem to get missed in some off the pick-up games I have been playing. It's carry's and assassin's all around.
My third choice will be another carry like Ashe. Caitlyn perhaps? I like that role and want some different options.
Also - where do champions like Darius and Jax fit in? I don' think they are a tank role. They aren't listed as assassin but every time I see someone playing them they are tearing it up.
Also a question about laning based on pacov's post above:
Why is sustain king in top lane? Is it because in your games a jungler leaves top solo (in my <30 games there is no jungler to speak of)? I understand why staying in the lane is so key - but I don't quite grasp why top and bottom are given different distinctions. Is it just an accepted strat for all? There are times in my games, which are blind pick, where you get a crappy match-up in your lane. Sometimes you can call for a switch and get a decent response and sometimes a poor response. I imagine in a draft pick game there is a whole aspect of pick and counter that plays into it - but then what determines who goes where?
Any insight into this (or any) aspect of the game is much appreciated.
Your games wont have a regular active jungle for quite a while still. As you get closer to level 30 it will get more common.
It's both a skill issue and a level issue. You don't have a full page of level 3 runes and full masteries so jungling is much much harder.
Sustain is so important top because you're solo, in a long lane. Mid is the other solo lane, but it's a shorter distance between towers, and a shorter distance back home. You're at higher risk top, so you need to keep your health up better, and return trips are more penalizing.
I'll try to get you into some games in the near future with us.
Don't get rammus. He's currently not so great. Best as a jungler, but there are many better choices than him. Imo, the best 2 tanks in the game are shen and malphite. Both of those guys are often banned, but perhaps not at your normal elo (and perhaps you are still doing blind pick anyway). Malphite's great for his initiate and his attack speed slow ability that can shut down adc's right after an initiate. You could try amumu as well, though he's really only useful as a jungler. You can build him tanky/ap. If you can snowball top, darius is a great pick as well and you can build him tanky and still have reasonable damage output.
For ranged ad carry - I'd personally recommend caitlyn and ezreal. Imo, those are the 2 best now. Both have higher skill caps than ash (imo), but its not rocket science. Cait is one of the easiest ad carries to lane as. Ez has exceptional mobility Cait shines best in the laning phase if you have a solid support - its very easy to zone the enemy out and deny them cs/xp. Cait's biggest asset is her long range autoattack. She out ranges all of the ad carries - and she has an ok escape mechanism. Anyway, she's currently my fav adc.
These guys are bruisers. Same sort of category as wukung and olaf. It's not always optimal, but you can build those guys tanky/damage. They are top laners or sometimes used as junglers. Your build should reflect what the team needs. It's not like the ad carry role where you typically build the same sort of things every game. The top laner should be making decisions based on team comp, if they need to initiate and tank, etc. For instance, if I have a reasonably tanky jungler, then I can likely focus more on damage as top lane. If I do not and will need to tank, then I should invest some money into tankier items.
Nope. The basic principal is that if I have health/mana, I can stay in lane longer and farm cs/xp. If I'm forced to retreat, then I lose that cs/xp... and if I die, I also lose that cs/xp. So, I can get sustain several ways - some characters have built in lifesteal or abiltiies that get you hp. Then you can itemize for sustain (flask + all red pots or a mix of red/blue). The thing is, if I have more sustain than another character and I smartly manage the creep waves, I can eventually force whoever I'm laning against to recall to base. As soon as I've pulled that off, I will push my creep wave into the enemy tower to deny whoever I was fighting against cs/xp (eg they can't get it if I've forced them to base). This will result in me being stronger when we come back to fight again. I'll recall immediately after pushing my creep wave into their tower. Anyway, you can only do that if you manage your health and mana resources well - AND having that extra sustain means that you can quickly heal up and stay in lane even if you have a bad exchange where you lose a bunch of HP.
Also, top lane is a kind of a mini game in and of itself. And to clarify - in the current meta, top lane is most often 1v1 with junglers on each side occasionally ganking or camping your lane. Anyway, the goal of the mini game is to make as much money as possible while denying the enemy as much money/xp as possible. Your job is to never die to your lane opponent or enemy jungler. And you generally want to keep the creep wave from pushing to the enemy tower unless you are going back to base.
Top lane is less action packed for the most part. It's all about me outmaneuvering another individual player. Bot lane is 2v2 + jungler ganks. There are more variables and therefore more risk associated (even though you have a support to look out for you). Sustain is great for bot lane as well, but I don't think you'd want to take the flask+pots approach as an adc. You could, but this would likely result in the enemy adc out damaging you. For instance, take a bot lane composition of zyra and cait. Now those 2 could burst you down from full hp to nothing if they landed their abiltiies right, etc. Because there are 2 people wailing away on you, its more likely you will die. So, if you went full sustain, you'd have to play very cautious while you heal up and the enemy can keep pressing. Again, following the example I gave with cait/zyra. Let's say those 2 manage to catch you and you barely get away with around 100hp. Now, if you have pots, you could heal up OVER TIME, but you'd be exposed for possible 2-3 people to work you over while you are healing up. Because the possible damage could kill you off before you could heal, sustain is not as good bot as it is top. Some sustain is good for bot lane (life steal in particular), but I don't think I'd ever go pots/flash on an adc.
one other thing about sustain in bottom lane - on cait I start with a dorian's blade and run life steal quints. This gives me 6% lifesteal per hit + 5 hp per hit at the start. That's actually pretty solid sustain for her as I can typically quickly recover hp from a enemy abilities or aa's. That type of sustain is great for early game. There are also sustain supports like soraka. A good soraka can keep you in lane while you farm. On an ok game, I'll be in lane until I hit around 1100 gold as adc. I might back sooner or later if I lock down a kill. If you are doing everything right, you can typically stay in lane until you have at least enough for a bf sword (1500 or 1550). But - that really depends on you having a good support, you managing your hp/mana, managing your creep wave, etc. If you check out any of the pro adc streams, its pretty common for the 1st shop to happen when they have around 1600 + gold. ADC's often go blood thirster because it provides a substantial amount of sustain.
edit - gold granted by jungle camps has been increased on pbe (per reddit)
(this is in relation to live servers, numbers are from first clear)
The large wolf now gives 55 gold, up from 40.
The small lizards at the buff camps now give 6 gold, up from 5.
The large wraith now gives 30 gold, up from 25.
The large golem(at doubles) now gives 55 gold, up from 45.
AFAIK nothing about this has been posted yet, and it seems to be a pretty big increase in gold income for junglers.
Super. Thanks for the information. Very helpful as I try to piece together how the next stage of the game is going to go for me.
I'm level 15 now and I generally only get in 4-6 games per night depending on the day. Weekends may be more...
I'll take a look at those champs and see what looks good. Cait has been on my radar for awhile but I really want a good tank and a support that I can learn to give me more options. Sometimes on the blind pick Ashe is taken...or the spots fill up quick and I notice that we don't have a tank/support at all. It matters less in this type of game I'm sure...but it still seems to make a decent difference.
I'd like to try out some voip games if it works out. I think I'm fairly malleable but at the same time...still new.
skype is the voip of choice now, btw.
I think you'd probably learn a hell of a lot having a good support back you up. The downside... once you actually have a good or decent support, methinks you will begin to hate playing adc without one. It is frustrating as crap being adc and having someone trying to take your cs - results in lots of missed cs and divides your focus because you have to try to do all of the normal stuff and cs and make sure you get the cs and your "support" does not.
Mauxe - I'll probably be around 7 or 8PM EST tonight. If I'm not running with a full group when you are around, I'll play some games as support for you (unless we are rolling with someone else that wants to play that role for you). Keep in mind that there are pretty good odds you'll be at a bit of a mismatch due to runes and masteries as if most of us are level 30, you'll quite possibly be up against a level 30 adc. Anyway, if you are around, mayhaps we will get in a some games tonight.
cool, I'll check in. I am usually not on until 9:30 or 10 though
.
Tough for me to get on any earlier with a brood of children
fair enough.
Here's a recent chart from lolmatches that breaks out the current elo distribution. Brand new players start at 1200.
fast tired blahblah - fun games - thx everyone that played. I enjoyed myself at any rate. A couple things. If anyone likes ed like i do and you see him around, try to train him up in other roles. Having a guy with only 2 roles is a little bit of a liability (eg I'd rather not put karl out of the jungle so I can support). I think he'd pretty quickly become ok with any other role, but I'd think adc would be the next stepping stone for him.
karl - next time you top with anyone other than cho, try going the flask/pots route. Keep in mind 2 things. 1 - Not everyone does this and its very strong sustain. 2 - you are going to SUCK SUCK SUCK top until you get used to all the match ups you will deal with. After all of my games top, I have X characters that fall into the i don't give a fuck category (eg beat me up and I'll still win the game or play a reasonable role). Jayce is an amazing counter for pretty much everyone top lane. Nidalee is incredibly safe. Malph - well.. who cares if they push you around - you will ult the team and slow the adc at the end. Oh no - I'm down 20 cs. You lose. And shen. Shen is super easy top lane. If you ever want to try shen or malph, I can likely make 1 of those 2 characters happen in any given game (shen is more likely). As I play as captain a ton, I think the odds of getting a free shen if we have first pick is about 80% if I choose to ban towards it. Getting a malph is like 40% odds even if I'm trying to get him.
Anyway, jungle experience will not help you know how a level 1 riven vs a level 1 udyr is going to play out. I'd recommend the flask/pots route while you figure things out. Worst case you blow it and heal up (or start with a ward and be extra safe). I really think going that route is the best while you try to figure out matchups. I'm sure you will get better and better the more top you play.
Ok then. So, the new champ is a support and I think will be very, very, very interesting. As in, folks might very well choose to ban both him and blitz (which will free up some other blocked characters). I think he's quite strong from what I've seen and could be amazing in a team setting. Think about it. Let's say your have a lee sin jungle. As asupport, lee sin could jump to whatever and engage - you could pull a mid in and you have a super gank bot lane... it gets even more sick if you think about a katarina that can jump (and or flash) from the left edge of dragon all the way to bot lane bush almost instantly. I think it will be amazing with a katarina comp. So, check out the youtube vids of the new champ and consider the possibilities. He might be rot... but I dont think so. Too much utility. Fuck - even consider you having a mid kart with this new character. New character ults - they cant get away from kart. Anyway, I think riot might have gone a little too crazy. We will see. In the meantime, all I want is someone that can play cat mid and is willing to roam. Gimme that and I'll give you crazy stuff bot lane. The damn bitch hops in with a shield on top of her ult... just sick... and op. So - pacov excited.
Anywho - night all. Thanks again for the fun games.
oh - and we played against this youtube fellow tonight and beat the piss out of him during lane... their team still won sadly tho.
http://www.youtube.com/user/Paladin14
If it makes anyone feel better, their team was about a 1700 elo average and we crushed the bot lane (guy with 2k elo in it).
I can play Shen top (I have over 100 ranked games with him - I used to play a substantial amount of top with Sion and Shen, but I don't know the matchups with some of the newer champions), but its really hard to get him consistently. He is banned almost 70% of the time in NA.
I think that you have to consider who you are playing when you go flask/pots only. It makes sense on some champions. It doesn't on others. I don't think it makes sense on Udyr in that matchup. If I was looking to play Darius or something, it would definitely make sense.
It's not like I was doing that terrible top. Even when I got hard countered, I was only down 120 cs to 150 at just over 20, and I was at 4/4 while he was at 5/3. So nothing terrible. I just don't like being in the long lane, while I got hard countered in picks, and we are playing bot, so I can't really expect many ganks from top due to geometry. I personally find that crap really frustrating since there is just nothing you can do unless your opponent sucks.
I've played Udyr vs Riven once before top, and I know the champions abilities. If you look at the numbers - early on, Riven's and Udyr's skills are about the same in terms of pretty much everything. The problem is that Udyr has to use 55 out of a starting 250 mana to use a skill, while Riven gets it for free. Which is why its a hard counter - Udyr holds even on a few exchanges, but then he is out of steam with no mana. Udyr's advantage comes later when he can passively get back lots of life from just being in turtle, but it takes too long to get to that point against an aggressive riven.
righto - I'd still say give a try to the flask/pots build sometime, but as you like ofc.
Holy crap am I wiped out today. Dragging quite a bit at work.
Anywho, new on PBE.
